The Game of Cat and Mouse... hopefully it stays just at the game level.

And I thought they were disputed waters around the disputed island, which are claimed by China, Japan and Taiwan. Described the area as Japanese is just as inaccurate as describing them as Chinese or Taiwanese.

They're not disputed, they've been Japanese for years and even had people living on them way back when. Why the Chinese want to keep pushing this is beyond me. Prolly just another power play.

Japan needs to grow a pair and BUILD on the Senkakus. The US needs to stop appeasing China and declare the islands to be Japanese territory.

Was never Chinese. PRC maps from the 1950s and 60s show them as Japanese territory. ever

1950s and 60s is hardly Ever. Although, with this thinking, it means the Northern Four Islands are definitely Russian. Always have been. Never Japanese. Have been since 1945.

@borscht

Completely wrong, Japan till this day have never printed a map stating the Northern territories as Russian/Soviet Union soil.

There is an official bilateral treaty between Japan and Russia signed in 1855 setting the boundaries between the new nations in which it clearly states that those four islands are Japanese soil though.

It was the South Koreans, they'd have whipped the chinanese's b--ts. Japan should stop being so pacifist.

Four China Coast Guard ships entered Japanese waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea on Sunday morning, the Japan Coast Guard said.

The next time China might send in larger and more heavily armed ships, i.e., cruiser or their new aircraft carrier to assert their claim.  Of course the pro-PRC fans here will say China will never act in such aggressive manner, unlike the U.S.

Absolutely!  The U.S. and Japan needs to stop appeasing China, toe the line and declare the islands to be Japanese territory or else see continued military activity in their backyard, like someday the Ryukyu Islands region.  And the next time Russia sends in warships proximity to the Kuril Islands, what will Japan do?

Complete nonsense. As stated, the four islands became recognized as Japanese by a treaty between Russia and Japan in 1855. As they became Japanese through diplomacy, they were exempt from Allied WWII proclamations of taking away territories Japan had taken by force. The USSR blatantly broke that rule, which is why t this day the US, UK and the EU consider them to be Japanese territory "Adminstered/occupied" by Russia.

As for the Senkakus, there exists no evidence that they were ever Chinese.. Ever. Never inhabited by any humans other than Japanese, te only remains of human habitation. China has produced ancient texts which "may" refer to these islands and even then only indicate an awareness of their existence. China's claim to the Senkakus is the result of usurping a Taiwanese claim for fishery resources and turning it into a geopolitical one allowing China to break the first island chain.

The Japanese will continue, as usual, to "negotiate" with China over this issue, because it's the only thing they can do. And China knows is has the upper hand from a military point of view. End of story.

...because it's the only thing they can do.

Unless they build a settlement on the island. Then they can say there can be no argument against it being Japanese sovereign territory, and can defend it as such.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The main reason Japan has not built on them since the original fishermen's houses is to not show aggression, because they know it would irritate China if they did. Everyone was much happier with the status quo. The islands were owned by private individuals. Even Taiwanese fishing was quietly tolerated. If China continues testing and pushing again, and again, and again like this then sadly Japan will finally be forced to act. Still China will blame Japan, though.

Well, not quite.  What's stopping the China from invading and occupying the Senkaku islands is the U.S. military presence on Okinawa.  Okinawa is 411 km from the Senkaku Islands, well within the range of the F-15s based on Kadena.  When the U.S. military is forced to leave Okinawa, China will make its move.  And they know the USAF or USN can't respond as quickly from Guam or Japan.

You can talk about who it belongs to in 19th century or post WWII to death but in the end it is whoever is on the Island. It’s Japan’s because Japan is the last to possess it. When someone else comes Japan has to defend it not just say it’s mine.

Oh YEAH; THIS is why all those US Military bases are on Okinawa.... I GET it.

I have seen an authentic map. It used to be Chinese. It’s an antique map and cost the owner around $20000 for the book. That said, it should be a marine park...scuba diving there looks awesome

I like the way people talk about "we should stop appeasing China." It'll never happen while thousands of western companies continue to get cheap products from China. I'm no Chinese fan but they've played a great card. Western companies are now addicted to cheap products and high profits. Not one of them will want that to stop. And that influences western government policy. That is the major problem. If you want to put pressure on China, then don't do business in China. That is the only way to stop China and that's not going to happen. China has us over a barrel.

Just like the Southern Kurils are Russian and Dokdo are Korean? OK.

Donald Trump is a puppet of Russia and China and The Orange Dotard of the USA has given his full permission to China to go ahead and take the islands with his blessings and also promised that Taiwan is theirs anytime as the USA will do nothing to stop them. The same goes for the Northern territories for Putin as he is the orange Pinocchio's puppet master and trump will follow and do as he is told.

And Japanese SDF are not capable of fighting anymore as they have proven over and over that China and Russia can walk in anytime and nothing will be done but a protest condemning them.

Sorry Japan you will need to learn Chinese and Russian as that is your destiny now with the puppet dotard Trump as he is doing the same to the USA.

Just shoot then down.

socrateos: "Just shoot then down."

They're not aircraft, bud. And in any case, it would be an act of war, one that Japan knows the US would be hesitant to back while China just went in and took the islands once and for all, as well as maybe some others.

Only four ships?

C'mon China, you can do better than that! Your 4 ships is only tickling Japan!

Tiau Yu Tai islands really belongs to Ilan county of Taiwan. In fact the rocks are geographically connected with the Datong mountain range of Taipei. Thus the flora and fauna of both are similar.

Graves of ancient Ilan and Keelung fishermen once abound in the islets until the Japanese destroyed most of them to hide evidence while pretending to build a lighthouse.

These declaration by Japan sayin da-kine islands are inherent Japanese territory is bull!

Tokyo's claim that those rocks were terra nullius in a funny way just directly contradicts their claim!

Nations actually don't need to claim lands that are inherently theirs in the first place! Lol!

TYT islands were taken away from a very weak Taiwan by a very powerful Imperial Japan that even colonized Formosa!

Nippon should do the right thing and give those islands back to very Japan-friendly Taiwan before it's too late.

Abe missed golden opportunity when he became PM 5 years ago to recognize the dispute and the promise Japan made to Chinese people when the two countries establish the normal relationship. Japan was tricked and played.

The dispute already cost Japan and China huge geopolitical and economical loss. Japan and China must put Japanese people and Chinese people interests first and resolve the dispute as soon as possible. Abe must make a public statement on the issue, otherwise it will be too late.
