Four people were killed and four others were injured in a two-car collision in Sunagawa, Hokkaido, on Saturday night.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 10:40 p.m. at an intersection on National Route 12. A mini-wagon carrying Koichi Nagaoke, 44, his wife Fumie, 44, their daughter Megumi, 17, son Shota, 16, and the couple's 12-year-old daughter, collided with a car carrying three men, Fuji TV reported. The impact sent the Nagaokes' car crashing into a streetlight post, throwing Megumi and her brother onto the street.
Shota's body was found on the street about 800 meters away. Police believe that after he was thrown from the mini-wagon, he was then hit by an oncoming car and dragged along. That car did not remain at the scene, but police said late Sunday they were questioning the driver of the car in question.
Police said that the four Nagaokes were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. Their youngest daughter and the three men in the other vehicle were also taken to hospital but their injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

thrown from the car = kids in the back not wearing seatbelts, which is a widespread problem in Japan.
Nonetheless, absolutely horrific accident

Carnage shown on TV news report suggests that high speed was a factor...

Appalling footage on the news, seat belts. Christ.. SEAT BELTS.
Speed definitely a factor. Probably alcohol too. What a stupid waste due to --most likely-- totally preventable behaviour. Phfffffffff~

My God. What an awful accident. And the 12 year old is the sole survivor in her family? That is going to be some deep deep trauma there. hope she gets all the help and support she needs.
