That is a very serious crime where I come from. It’s also ‘supposed to be’ illegal in Japan, not that anyone would notice. Children under 12 years old (elementary school) should never be left home alone. I have no doubt this boy would still be alive if he was being supervised.

There is no reason or excuse for leaving a 4 year old at home alone! None! The stupidity of some people here never ceases to astound me!

Stupidity and blame aside... I feel for the parents.

I do not always (maybe rarely) side with people here criticizing the parents over some of the accidents we read about but in this case...geeze...this is a serious crime in most places (and I think it is in Japan).

In this case I would have to join the chorus and ask the parents what the heck was going on?!

I'll say what I said last week, the week before that, and will say when the next kid dies next week if not before. Safety nets! It can easily be done. Won't save everyone, and probably not people who want to die, but it would save some of these kids whose moronic parents leave them at home alone, or windows open and unaccompanied in the same room, or with clutter on the balcony the kids can climb, etc. RIP to the kid, and shame on the parents. They should be locked up for negligence -- you DO NOT leave a four-year-old kid at home alone even if the place is childproofed, which is only the case in about 1% of homes here, and was definitely not in this case.

I used to work for a housing department, albeit in an IT position, where something similar to this happened. A child crawled through a a window and fell twelve floors to its death. That was in the 1980s! The director of said department then issued an edict that no window in any property above the third floor should be able to open to a point where a child could get through.

It really is insane that they left a four year old home alone (I have a four year old, he doesn’t go anywhere without one of us with him).

These stories are way too common here though, even when parents are home with their kids. The overcrowded apartments with insufficient safety features that half the population live in these days just make this a steady drumbeat of preventable child deaths. Its heartbreaking to read.

This is such sad news. Poor kid was home alone. What were the parents thinking?

4 year old home alone? Lock the parents up for child abuse!!

It should be illegal to leave a four year old alone. He probably took the step out to look for his parents over the rail.

A 4-year-old boy fell to his death from the seventh floor of an apartment in Tokyo.

Police said the boy apparently walked out of his family’s apartment and fell from the corridor. Although there is a one-meter-high railing along the corridor, there was a 15-cm-high stand near the spot where the boy fell from. Police believe the boy brought it out from the apartment and climbed up on it, before toppling over.

It sounds to me like this baby was wait and trying to look to see if he could see his parents, but fell. Where were his parents and why did they have to leave him alone? Where did they HAVE to go without their baby? I hope the judge throws the book, gavel, podium, desk at them for their selfishness.
