Five people were injured, one seriously, after a car plowed into a bank ATM in front of Musashinodai station in Fuchu city on Tuesday.
According to police, the car, driven by an 80-year-old man, hit the ATM enclosure while a 70-year-old man was inside at about 1:45 p.m. The man suffered serious injuries and remains unconscious in hospital, NHK reported.
Also injured were two women in their 50s and 60s, as well as a woman in her 30s and her 3-year-old daughter.
The driver of the car, identified as Minoru Shirane, was quoted by police as saying that he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, NHK reported.

Probably not in Japan.
Guza!

This happens all over the world where there are a lot of old people. Happened at two ATM's and one large super market when I was back in the states this past summer. Testing needs to be done.

I'll have to disagree with you on that I'm afraid; driving is not a right, it's a privilege.

Dangerous situation and I feel for those who were injured.

I bet any amount that it was an automatic car, and he got confused with gas and brake pedal. The usual story. Old people + automatic transmission = accident waiting to happen.

This is the second time i have read a story like this. Thats a real shame. They should maybe start some kind of new reflex test for people.
MaboDofuIsSpicy
There sure were a lot of people in that ATM

Everyone has a right to drive, even if they do not do it so well.

Thanks for the citation, CrazyJoe.

Was it a Prius? Sarcasm here too.
CrazyJoe, not knocking you or anything, but I figure there are also more drivers between the ages of 18-29 then the over 70 age group.
Elbuda, remember, you're going to be an elder one day....

Ok time to sue the car manufacturers for putting accelerator pedals in cars now !
Sarcasm desu !
CrazyJoe
More men and women in the 18-29 age group cause more of these accidents than the over 70 age group.

This is why I have been saying for years that Japan needs drive-thru banking!
Seriously this happens a lot. Elderly people pressing the wrong pedal and then being excused due to their age.

Time to make it ILLEGAL for all of these old geezers to DRIVE any CARS!! ASAP!!!

Nothing against Senior drivers persee as we have horrible dangerous drivers in any age range but why they havent implemented a yearly test yet is beyond me.

Saw an old man driving down the road the other day...must have had a foot on the brake AND the accelerator because his brake lights were constantly on.
In these cases, the old people should have to renew EVERY year with a driving test in a simulator with different situations to simulate real life driving situations.

"mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake" story of the week...
simple solution : redesign the accelerator of the car

Why am I not surprised it's a person in their senior years?
