Five men died and another man remains in a coma after the station wagon they were traveling in plunged into a dam in Kawachinagano, Osaka Prefecture, on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on a bridge crossing the Takihata dam. Fuji TV reported that the men were on their way back from a barbecue at a nearby campsite. The station wagon crashed through a wire fence and plunged about 10 meters into the dam.
Police said four men in their 50s and one in his 60s were in a state of cardio-pulmonary arrest when their bodies were recovered. They were taken to hospital where their deaths were confirmed on Sunday night. The sixth passenger, a man in his 20s, remains in a coma, police said.
The men all worked for an Osaka construction company.

So sad, RIP. Any chance alcohol was a factor?

Awful thing to happen, 5 men on the verge of their golden years who now will never get a chance to play again with any grandkids, spouses, go to nomikai, or do anything else again. My condolences to the families.

RIP
Takihata Dam is a very well-known suicide spot in Osaka and a very spooky place. I have always rejected people when they asked me to go there for a bbq or to check it out.

RIP, but if I had to guess I'd say, given they were coming back from a BBQ, that alcohol was involved.

On the news in Osaka they stressed that drink driving is a crime every time they reported this story, so I think it may have been a case of drink driving.

Any chance alcohol was not a factor?
