And America and its allies cruise through the straights of Taiwan. Legal on both sides.

Yes, that was surely a quite threatening and provocative maneuver, especially their taking the route of that combined fleet through the two straits of Japan, which isn’t at all necessary for military training purposes. Good that I am not responsible… I would have torpedoed one of the main and more expensive frigates ‘by accident’ and then expressed very deep and heartfelt regrets by the ambassador , just to teach them not to come such near again. lol

Maybe looking for that weeb that swam all the way to Japan.

22 ( +23 / -1 )

How about this for a peaceful solution? Japan should try charging tolls for navigating through the straits.

It's probably worth a combined US/JPN fleet sailing through the Sea of Japan off Vladivostock.

The Russians are coming!!!! Watch out that they don't steal Hokkaido. Probably in league with Orange.

20 years ago the Chinese barely had a navy - no wonder they want to test out their ships. The Russians just love to stir the pot - they thrive on the instability. In fact it is their main way to compensate for their poor military options (thugs and spooks at one end, big bombs at the other… and not a tremendous amount of capability in between).

Evil Putin and his rusty old fleet pushing their luck. Wouldnt take much from them and the JMSDF along with the USN could scuttle the fleet.

Give it up with your games, Russia. Japan and the US have your measure.

Politicians in both Japan and the US are intent on racking up more and more public debt (to get themselves elected), so one does feel increasingly concerned for the integrity of Japan’s islands.

The vast majority of Japanese debt is domestic. The Japanese government, having the ability to issue sovereign currency, can choose when to pay back this debt. Therefore this "debt" is no problem.

The US may be a different case with a lot of foreign debt.

And Japan is simply standing up for herself and her sovereign territory, against the present and building Chinese, North Korean and Russian threats against her.

Japan best stay put for now.

China-Russia are doing this to rustle US's feathers.

Don't get into this meaningless fight.

-7 ( +10 / -17 )

So as NATO and the US do their military drills in International seas Russians have their right to do theirs.

-1 ( +15 / -16 )

Surprised the NKs weren't invited to come along. Annoying other countries with provocative maneuvering seems to be a thing these days.

Well, it is if you want to pay pensions etc. Someone domestic holds that debt, so someone domestic gets screwed if they default. GPIF are likely sitting on a lot of that as are the post office and many local banks.

Printing our way out locally can lead to hyperinflation... not really a better option to default

Send out Sori in a rowboat, with a megaphone to give them a tongue lashing!

Japan is always talking about war. So what if Russia decides to go through war ??!.

-15 ( +2 / -17 )

Exercises are generally carried out in a defined area. This was done after the joint exercise and in such a way as to be deliberately provocative to Japan. Yes they were in international waters, but where they were doesn’t mean that much, it is what they did and how they did it that is quite clearly sending a message and it assuredly isn’t a friendly one.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

Not socially distancing!

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Last time the Russians tried to sail a fleet through the Tsushima Strait it didn’t work out so great for them.

Japan is always talking about war. So what if Russia decides to go through war ??!.

Never war happens. What for? Russia eagerly wants a peace treaty with Japan for a long time and needs more economy support from Japan. Russia can't afford to start war anyway. War costs a lot. Russia is now at war of coronavirus.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

With Japan's current attitude towards the international community and the USA , perhaps Japan's allies will abandon Japan .

With all this high tech weaponry and USA military bases around the world why does the USA need to protect a begrudging country like Japan anyway.

Russia and China and korea and the Philippines and other Asian nations haven't forgotten Japan's imperial wartime past.

Is it really worthwhile for the USA to protect Japan ?

Just a thought.

-11 ( +5 / -16 )

The US and Japan being put on notice that you can’t start a war with China or Russia because they’ll combine forces…North Korea lurking in the background! This is all because of The US who are always causing some trouble around The Middle East and Asia where they have no right to be! The tension they created last week regarding Taiwan ( training their military secretly and going against the NATO resolution) is just an example!

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Naval vessels sailing in international waters is perfectly legal and normal. Close to Japan? Sure, and done deliberately to send a message? Sure.

Does the US do this on a daily basis? Of course

Then why is it news..... Mr Kishida's desire to increase military spending to appease the US? Much better if there is a "threat".

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Sailing through what are international waters in time of peace is all well and good. The US and allied navies do similar things routinely to protect their right to use the high seas. However in a war much would change and the last two times the Russians tried sailing a fleet through those waters it didn't end well for them. Weapons and especially sensors are vastly better today. Interesting aside but the second battle with the Imperial Russian Navy in the Tsushima Straits was the first incidence of the use of electronic warfare. A Russian ship was trying to send a message by Morse Code and a radioman on a Japanese warship upon hearing their code signal simply keyed his own telegraph on the same frequency and blocked their message.

A North Korean dinghy was spotted trailing behind trying to join in I read.

Printing our way out locally can lead to hyperinflation...

We've been reading that ridiculous soundbite cliche for 40 years. Hyperinflation? Japan can't even squeeze out 1% inflation.

12 nautical miles are the accepted boundaries from land of a country, they should of been sunk

The narrowest point of the Tsushima Strait is 60km. Territorial waters extend 20 km (12 nautical miles) from shore making it quite possible to pass through the straits in international waters. Japan's territorial waters only extend 3 nm from land on either side of the Tsugaru Strait leaving a lane of international waters through the strait to facilitate international commerce. You find similar situations in the Straits of Malacca, Straits of Hormuz and the Dardanelles. Without such accommodations vital international waterways would be closed to shipping altogether.

People often fixate on the last crisis and do not see the next one coming. Until the pandemic upset global supply chains, deflationary pressures predominated the global economy. In a year or two when supply chains settle down deflationary pressures will return with a vengeance. The fundamental causes of these deflationary pressures have not gone away and will not without major anti trust and tax reforms most countries are loathe to take.

Japan needs to pull out their nine dash map and put an end to this incursion into their territory.

So. What's the problem? Why is this news?

"Japan and the United States are long-time security allies."

Calling a militarily occupied, handcuffed vassal an ALLY seems a bit of a propagandistic stretch. How would the U.S. react if Japan wanted to enter independent 'defense' agreements with its two CLOSEST neighbors? Closer ties with the dynamic market of Japan would economically benefit both Russia and China and could easily make up for economic blocks which America might try to establish against its own best interests and domestic demand and would mitigate any 'aggressive' impulses toward Japan some in the governments of either of its closest neighbors might have.

I don't have the experience or knowledge regarding these issues that Desert Tortoise seems to have, but it seems as though Japan could exercise much greater 'clout' here as a pivotal point in U.S. interests in the Western Pacific and, perhaps, begin to resist U.S. pressure towards confrontation and, maybe dictate to Washington what's 'best for Japan' rather than what's best for the U.S.. To deny that, in the historical perspective, China is 'on the rise' and America is in decline both domestically and internationally is foolish.

As "a house divided" (by outside interests), America is becoming erratic and unpredictable and an unstable threat to our entire current instance of 'civilization'. Invasive, rapidly multiplying, financial parasites have completely hollowed out America's economy, recent military misadventures have shown America's youth to be less easily rendered murderously suicidal despite the depth of the psychopathy directing them, offshore political voices have taken control of America's poorly educated and directed, and are directing, them against national unity, and these same 'interests' have decimated the finances of these same people while enriching America's most pathological subgroup and its related demonstrably psychopathic offshore religio/racist parasite. At this time, America is tottering while holding a fully loaded weapon aimed at the World.

Historically, when Empire falls, it is 'interesting times' for those involved. But, such involvement has never included MOST of the Humans onplanet at the time, and the untimely demise of much of them, despite the aggrandizingly named 'World Wars'. And if there are solutions, I am blind to them. The old saying "...either in a War or between Wars..." has been true since Mankind first put stylus to clay and, no doubt, well before. Is there no other way, because the current path seems to say "NO"...we as a species are not smart enough to be able to change our own primitive behaviors or eliminate those small percentages of us whose mindless Greed initiates them. Ne?

This is just the beginning.

The beginning of what?

Stop complaining.

Every sovereign country has the right to sail outside of 12 nm from shoreline, including Japan.

Japan too can circle around Sakhalin if it wanted, just as how Japan has sailed through Taiwan Strait.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Go Ahead. We need the budget increase and Article 9 changed. Russian aggression and Chinese flexing is the best argument to the rest of Japan for significant change to happen.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Japan military will probably try some desperate dumb plan of action and not well thought out strategy and failure then expect the USA to protect them

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

@ReasonandWisdomNippon

We need the budget increase

Japan can't afford budget increase without cutting back on social welfare spending.

Such a destabilizing move by China and Russia.

The Osumi Strait, is just 27 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. At 160 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, the Taiwan Strait is huge compared to the passages between the Japanese islands. And the Chinese complain about passage through the Taiwan Strait as a provocation. What do they call this?

Russia said this was to, "demonstrate the state flags of Russia and China, maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and also protect facilities of both countries' maritime economic activity."

What facilities and maritime activity do they have in Japanese waters? Circling A Japanese Island is provocative in the least.

Perhaps a Japanese and American fleet of 10 ships should be dispatched to sail around Hainan to reciprocate.
