Police in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, said Monday that a 6-year-old boy drowned in a river on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the boy, Tensei Tatsukami, had been at a barbecue with his mother and her friends near the Ashina River. TV Asahi reported that the accident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. His mother told police that she noticed him missing after she had finished making preparations for the barbecue.

Police said one of the boy's shoes was found floating on the river surface. Emergency rescue personnel found the boy's body on the riverbed about 20 minutes later. The boy was confirmed dead at the scene, police said.

Police believe that the boy somehow fell into the river and drowned.

I really get tired of reading articles about kids dying here. Your child is six and near a river. Keep your eye on them while preparing for a bbq or better yet, get the child involved and helping so you can keep an eye on them and teach them how to help.

RIP poor child.

A 6 year old kid should be able to swim! Yobo many Japanese kids drown because they can't swim at all!

Most six year old kids can't swim Dis. They can float but not swim and certainly now any distance fully clothed. More so in a river. Which is why parents should be keeping an eye on their kids around rivers, oceans...

Quite right. No six year old would be able to swim clothed in moving water. A parent needs to keep an even closer idea on a child near a river because children are attracted to water, especially in the heat.

I wanted to see the location of the Ashina River but couldn't find it in Google Maps. Could this be the Ashida River?

Is it still the rainy season there? Swollen rivers can cause riverbanks to collapse unexpectedly.
