67% of young people in Japan routinely engage in power saving: survey

Ok, so tell us what kind of power saving measures are they taking. It is a nice story, and perhaps bodes well for the future, but without more information we don't really know what they are doing.

The Tokyo-based foundation conducted the online survey covering a total of 1,000 people aged 17 to 19 across Japan from July 29 to Aug 2.

But why focus on energy consumption particularly for youth? I would like to know the comparative data by age. Being very small in number, the Japanese young and their behavior (change) have little impact on the entire energy policy in society. Besides, at the age of 17-19, they are unlikely to pay bills by themselves.

And all the while Japan will not restart any of their nuclear reactors! I understand that some are quite old and are past their expiration date, but there are others that are relatively new and could be used to help during this time of shortage.

I live in a big old rambling house, most of it unused since the kids have left. My wife and I shut most of it up and satisfy ourselves in just a few rooms, only two of which we cool.

Good news, but would be more positive if they had been motivated by the need to act on the climate crisis, which ultimately, will have far wider and more serious consequences than the Ukraine war.

And do they somehow save the planet or climate or have a lot of money now or soon become mega rich by saving routinely the energy? I don’t think so. And the biggest problem nowadays is, if you already long time have made those efforts and saved the possible maximum of energy, how can you now potentially react as everything becomes still even more limited and expensive? Impossible, and quite shot into the own goal, isn’t it?

Next spring will see a 20-25% increase in electricity bills.

My eldest is 17 now. I'll have to try telling her to "get the bus to help the environment" rather than my wife going to pick her up. I don't think she'd be very happy. :)

A positive result from the survey, but it would be justified to have even higher numbers, specially now that the energy costs are increasing. People can be saving power just because of personal benefit without even having to be interested in sustainability or ecological consideration. Maybe the word "routinely" is what makes it a relatively low percentage, people may be doing something to avoid wasting energy but not in a way that lets them think of it as a routine, just occasional actions.

I just got 580km on a tank of regular petrol today, my record. I achieve this in my big car by constantly swiping from drive to neutral modes when driving. I’m doing my bit.

And, rising electricity prices ain't about the war in Ukraine. If that's what they think, then I fear for the future of this country. Completely brainwashed. I want to know by whom and for what reason!

I also could say that 67% of Japans households have their TV's on 15 hrs. a day and even watching it.

In the survey, 54.4 percent of the respondents said they were very or somewhat interested in Japan's energy

Is that proof that they also know what happened to Fukushima?

only 17.3 percent said they understood how the system works.

That's ok nobody know how current government work on deciding things.
