A 7-year-old boy drowned after he and a friend fell into a river in Fukuoka City, police said Wednesday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Nakagawa River in Minami Ward. Fuji TV quoted police as saying that the two boys were playing on the river bank when they slipped and fell into the water. One of the boys managed to crawl back up onto the embankment on his own and seek help.

A passerby managed to pull Ryusuke Zaibu from the river. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There is a fence surrounding the Nakagawa River to prevent falls, and police are investigating to find out how the boys got near the river.

RIP little man, imo kids are allowed far to much freedom as "Japan is so safe" Its a weekly event for me stopping a kid running in front of a car at our local park as mom or gran is busy with the smartphone. Not saying this case is the parents fault but being aware of ones surroundings is a skill that should be introduced asap, for kids and adults.

Tragic, rip. It is always heart breaking to see children die for senseless reasons.
