An 83-year-old man drove his car about 1.2 kilometers along the railway tracks of the JR Muroran line in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, on Tuesday night.

According to police, the man’s car was seen stopped on the tracks at around 10:30 p.m.

Local media quoted the man, who is from Kushiro, as telling police that he got confused when he drove his car onto a rail crossing, thinking it was an intersection instead. He turned onto the tracks and drove for about 1.2 kms, passing Shiraoi Station, before he got stuck on another crossing as he tried to drive off the tracks.

Police said the man was not injured.

Hokkaido Railway Co said a freight train stopped about 600 meters behind from the car, while five commuter trains were delayed.

Police said the man was not injured.

Perhaps not. But he is most assuredly mentally impaired and should have his license revoked.

That's what he told them, but I'd like to think that he'd held a secret desire to drive along the railway track at least once before he died.

How about the old reliable: " I was DRUNK "...however, it doesnt' state that he was....just seems fitting.

I guess he can check "drive my car along the railway tracks" off his bucket list.

Sure hope autonomous cars don't make the same error.
