An 88-year-old man died after he apparently fell off the roof of his house while he was clearing snow in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture, on Wednesday.

According to police, Fujitaro Ito was found collapsed in front of the entrance to his house at around 2:10 p.m. by a neighbor, Fuji TV reported. He was taken to hospital where his death was confirmed about 2 1/2 hours later due to a cerebral contusion.

Police said a ladder was found standing against the wall near the entrance to the house. Ito was found with a shovel gripped in his right hand. The snow piled on top of the roof also showed signs that someone had been shoveling it.

Every year the same scenario. Then, you have the ones in summer who get blown off roofs while cleaning gutters in a typhoon. “Ignorance can be cured, but stupidity cannot!”

Wakarimasen - Must have been a sprightly old fellow to be on his roof shoveling snow.

Yeah, but, it's a shame his 'sprightliness' didn't come with common sense.

Must have been a sprightly old fellow to be on his roof shoveling snow.   although why he felt the need to do so is a bit of a mystery.

At 88? Nowhere near that myself and there is no chance in hell Im getting on the roof on a good day. Still gripping the shovel when they found him, that's a single mindlessness that caused the incident, I trip and drop everything prepare for impact.

Tendo is just north of Yamagata City. JMA say the snow depth just after Tuesday night's big dump in Yamagata was about 25cm. It has since settled to under 20. 25cm of snow is not going to destroy your home, especially with little extra snow on the radar. He should have just left it.

RIP.

It was only yesterday, with the threat of snow approaching my hometown, that I mentioned this kind of stupidity to a friend. He's a roofing company owner. His reaction was priceless.
