A 9-year-old boy died after jumping or falling from the apartment building where he lived with his family in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, police said.

According to police, the boy was found, bleeding from the head, lying on the ground outside the building by a resident at around 8 a.m. Tuesday. Fuji TV reported that he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Police said the boy left his home 20 minutes prior to the incident to attend his school’s third-term opening ceremony. However, no one saw him return to the apartment building. When found, he was wearing his school rucksack. Furthermore, a paper bag belonging to the boy was found on the seventh-floor stairway, although his family's apartment is on the fourth floor.

The Suita City Board of Education said there have been no reports of bullying or school trouble concerning the boy, but said officials are planning to interview teachers and students.

What a terrible thing to happen, whatever the reasons behind it. Poor boy, and his poor family.

That's just terrible. I feel so sad for both him and his family. 9 years old.

I saw this on the news last night. They are still speculating why he was on the 7th floor, which is the top floor of the apartment block. Sadly, they are coming to the conclusion that this was a deliberate act and not an accident. What pushed a 9 year old kid to jump off a building?

I hate the thought of suicide by a nine-year-old but I hate even more the thought that someone could have thrown him off. God I hope that wasn't the case.

Family death is rarely investigated in Japan and autopsies are not common but it seems strange to me that so many children in Japan die from 'falling' out of apartments.
