Zoos suck. People paying to keep wild non domesticated animals in captivity for personal enjoyment suck as well. Aquariums are just as bad.

Burned into my memory, and my one, and only visit to UENO ZOO 25yrs ago. Advised to go and see the pink monkeys, so cute, so unusual. They were pink, all their hair had/ was being self pulled out, a huge troupe in a 10X10 meter cage with only one barely standing dead tree in the middle. Clearly all distressed. Sadly, my first reality check on lack of animal rights/protection in JPN

7 hours of being cute and cuddly, and getting all the bamboo you want ? Sign me in !
But on a serious note, we now know that animals are also subject to stress, and this sure will not be a good thing at such a young age.

So cute.

Sad. Animals should not be put ‚on display‘!

tough one. i hate zoos, but when i was in england, small children were asked to draw a fish. half drew fish fingers, the other half triangle shaped. all were brown. basically they had never seen a fish outside a supermarket frozen food section.
animals in zoos should have native habitats and it should be an adventure to spot one.

I went to the panda sanctuary at the Beijing Zoo and the Chinese visitors were the same there. Waiting in line, pushing and people wearing panda outfits.

Monkeys eating their own excrement, polar bears driven mad and mauling their young, children screaming and banging on the windows of the shy, timid nocturnal animals displays.
Zoos are pretty much out of date - a hangover from the Victorian era. If man must insist on continuing zoos they should be safari sized, big parklands. Places with space. Vast space.

Are there animal labor laws?

Took the words out of my mouth. 100% on the money.
Excellent post! Exactly. The only zoo that has that here that I've seen is the one in Higashi Matsuyama near Chichibu in Saitama. Its almost like a Safari and the animals are not distressed.

Zoos in Japan? No thank you. I've seen what they're like. I've never seen a single monkey without any signs of mental illness.

It never stops amazing me how such nice people like the Japanese can be at the same time, in the same person, so selfish and cruel.
All Japanese zoo's should be closed, they are a disgrace. And about the Panda, anyone who really cares and loves that animal will leave it with its mother and NOT go see it. That is loving the panda.
