The bear attacked a 95 year old man and a car!

Sounds pretty crazy.

So they knew the bear was in the vicinity a week ago, we’re on the highest alert, and didn’t have the time or opportunity to prepare measures that didn’t involve killing the animal?

No doubt the intrepid hunters had a field day and celebrated with bear sashimi and bear nabe.

Painfully obvious you have zero knowledge of bears.

Sad that the bear had to be killed. I am not one to support the killing of rogue wild animals since it is us humans who have encroached on their territory.

Could the bear not be saved???.

Following its assault on the vehicle, the bear fled into a house where hunters shot it.

There was another one shot in an old lady's house in Nagano recently. From the sound of the story, it got into the kitchen and the lady just fled into another room for a couple of hours till the hunters turned up. She seemed remarkably unfazed by the whole experience.

That's what happens when you cut down forests to build towns and plant mono-culture everywhere. Not the bear's fault at all...

Why humans need to control their territory? And yes, i am one of those who don't pick up poo of my dog when he does on the grass.

Poor bear has kids too, they need to feed their family but we humans don't think about but ourselves.

There should be some kind of gigantic animal that should come out of nowhere and swallow each human as their only source of food.

I am against "putting down" any wildlife unless necessary. However in this instance it may have been unavoidable.

OK cleo please educate me. Where do they eat Bear as sashimi? Are there people somewhere who get off on trichinosis? Or Hepatitus C?

Saw on NHK 6:00pm news this evening. The story of the attack is worrying for people that's for sure.

But the news item focused and zoomed on the dead bear sprawled out on a blue sheet at least 4 times.

What purpose other than a kind of claim to "We have killed the killer(potential) and here it is and you are all safe now)". Akin to a "trophy shot" or a "Strung 'im up photo".

No need to display the carcass of the blameless animal.

Such a sad sight.

I used to live in Hokuriku. I’ve had meals where it was on the table. (Not on my plate).

I never understand this kind of reaction. Humans go into a wild animals home turf, feels threatened,

and reacts. Us humans then kill the animal. It is US whom are at fault, NOT the animal.

Why not use a dart gun, sedate the animal? Take it to a safe location.

It's not fault. We live, they live. Sometimes they encroach upon our territory and become dangerous to our own livelihoods. It's unfortunate we cannot reason with them and say 'go over to that valley', but they're animals. So it becomes the rules of nature - kill or be killed. It's not like other animals are out their letting bears kill them willingly because they accidentally stumbled into a bear's territory.

Humans should do their best to maintain safe areas for wildlife, but that doesn't mean we should just let them kill us in our cities.

Where I live there are frequent encounters with bears. Most often, the bear retreats. But some bears have become far too aggressive because of easy food (garbage) where people live. They become dangerous, pure and simple, and while our wildlife officers often tranquilize the occasional rogue bear, they sometimes have to shoot one. I'd rather see that than a horribly mauled human or half-eaten child. No soapbox here.

Once a bear has no fear of humans, it should be humanely killed, and a good shot from a high powered rifle is as humane as it gets.

This fall there are very few chestnuts and walnuts in the forests as so the bears are COMING into inhabited areas to look for food. No one is encroaching on their turf.

Thank you for the link. Seems that the meat is frozen first and served at a "bear meat specialty" restaurant. I suppose one could equate that to a Fugu restaurant; no fisherman would prepare it at home. Hunters are known for Kumanabe but I doubt very much any of them would do sashimi at home as there are countless warnings on the internet about Trichinosis and bear meat. Doubt anyone could pay me to eat bear.

No doubt whatsoever involved - absolutely, no one could pay me to eat bear meat!

As far as I know, freezing kills the parasites in pork, but not necessarily in meat from wild animals.

I loved the time I spent in Hokuriku (straddling the border between Ishikawa and Toyama) - fabulous place, lovely friendly people, both sea and mountains within very easy reach - but some of the food I found less than enchanting.

Once on a trip up into the mountains, came across a bear cub tied up as a tourist attraction outside a souvenir shop. I hate to think what happened to Mama bear and any siblings, and my Japanese language skills at the time weren’t up to finding out. Not to mention what would happen to the cub when it grew too big to be tied up outside a shop for passersby to fondle.

Not to mention what would happen to the cub when it grew too big to be tied up outside a shop for passersby to fondle.

It's too bad you couldn't find out. There are a number of possible reasons for that cub to have been there so I don't think one should immediately jump to any conclusion. As for when the cub gets bigger, there are zoos and other destinations. At least it's unlikely to face an Ainu Iomante fate.
