A man, identified as the first secretary at the Bulgarian Embassy in Japan, was found dead on the ground in front of a commercial building in Shinjuku on Monday morning in what appears to be a suicide, police said.
At around 9:45 a.m., a passerby called emergency services saying that he saw a man “falling from a high place,” Sankei Shimbun reported. When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found the man lying on the ground unconscious. He was taken to a hospital where he was soon pronounced dead.
The man was identified as the first secretary of the Bulgarian Embassy in Tokyo, which is located in Shibuya ward. The man, whose name has been withheld, was 41 years old and had apparently begun his term at the embassy in March.
Eyewitnesses reported to the police that they saw the man standing on the 7th floor of the building shortly before he fell to his death. There was no suicide note found at the scene, police said.

Civitas, "gaijin" suicide just as well as the Japanese. Nothing out of the ordinary here. A lot of European countries have higher suicide rates than Japan, Belgium being the most developed. BTW, when talking about multiple countries and situations outside Japan, using the term gaijin is senseless.

In "The Whistleblower," a troublesome embassy staffer is tossed off the roof of a building by assasins\spies. A favored tactic, according to the story, as it leaves little evidence and police often suspect suicide.
What does this mean? Is it unusual for people to "stand" while on the seventh floor? Should they be sitting instead?

Living in a city of mega metropolis Tokyo, I can imagine what is a life of many tendencies, especially when it concerns to money + debt - to suicidal tendencies. However, I hope not...

First, they do. In my hometown, there is 1 skyscrapper and over a hundred of persons have jumped from there. They are not Japanese tourists but depressive 'gaijins'. Then, how do you know his ethnicity ? That said, any death of a diplomat is suspect. There will certainly be a double investigation.

Jeff, I checked that with several news sources. The most detailed was this one from the Sankei: ビル７階の階段踊り場で男性が立っているのが目撃されていた。which says he was seen standing on the landing of the seventh floor staircase.

Reminds me of the 'suicide' of my favorite director, Itami Juzo, right after he had brilliantly exposed the Yakuza's operating methods to intense and uncomfortable scrutiny.

The suicide letter he reportedly left behind denied any involvement in such an affair. One theory is that Itami's suicide was forced by members of the Goto-gumi yakuza faction. A former member of the Goto-gumi faction told journalist Jake Adelstein in 2008, “We set it up to stage his murder as a suicide. We dragged him up to the rooftop and put a gun in his face. We gave him a choice: jump and you might live, or stay and we’ll blow your face off. He jumped. He didn’t live.”

Wonder if Russia is behind this one too ? The Bulgarian Embassy is in Shibuya... so why was he in Shinjukyu ? And how did he gain access to a Commercial Building ? Which Building ?
