Bus companies warned about parking chaos near Shinjuku Station

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has issued a warning to all bus companies due to multiple incidents of expressway buses being parked for prolonged hours within the vicinity of the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal near Shinjuku train station.

Since the opening of the bus and taxi terminal (known as "Busta Shinjuku") in April 2016, repeated incidents of buses parking where they are not supposed to have spurred Tokyo metropolitan government officials to reevaluate and clarify entry and parking regulations, Fuji TV reported.

One of the busiest transportation hubs in Japan, Busta Shinjuku was used by over 10 million people in its first year. This amounts to roughly 28,000 commuters utilizing the massive terminal a day.

However, incidents of expressway buses being parked along streets near Busta Shinjuku for extended amounts of time have been on the rise. More than 10 buses a day are stopping in no-parking zones.

How about making more bus parking spaces since demand is so high?

Don't think there are many options to increase parking availability.

That being said Im in Shinjuku most days an it looks like many bus operators are simply trying to avoid paying to park for extended periods .. Large punitive fines might help solve the problem.

another example of great planning, like one lane highways.

Shinjuku recently got a new bus terminal.

Seen it recently in Kichijoji Tourist bus let out passengers and parked.

His backend touched an intersection, end result trucks and municipal busses couldn't towards the station as one of two lanes were blocked right outside Yodobashi.

"Busta" is a great facility, especially for Haneda flights. However it is a new purpose-built facility, so you'd think the planners would have thought about this problem beforehand and made the needed space available, like under or above ground.

Issue tickets and points on the drivers' licences, same as for everyone else.

why police is not taking care of that? these companies are trying to skirt parking fees and create dangerous road conditions.. send drivers and operators to jails with huge fines.

Happens everywhere in Japan. Buses, taxis and trucks take up one side of a dual carriageway; blocking traffic, as there is nowhere else for them to park. And everywhere, the police do nothing.

I used this place once. Insufficient seating and toilet facilities, only a couple of vending machines and nowhere nearby to buy anything. It's far worse than the waiting area/lounge the bus company used to have in Shinjuku before they were forced to move to this place.

I've only been to "Busta" once. Maybe it was the train I got off, but it was much further on a badly signposted and more convoluted route than the old highway coach station behind the big electronics superstore opposite the department stores on the west side of the station. I nearly missed my bus as a result.

If buses are illegally parked, ticket them like everyone else.

Do illegally parked vehicles ever actually get ticketed?

I saw literally dozens of drivers getting away with illegally parking on a bridge to watch some fireworks back in May. The police were there with their megaphones, but didn't appear to write anyone up. Literally dozens of illegally parked cars, blocking two of that bridge's four lanes.

In Queenstown New Zealand there are 30 plus Tour Buses overnighting during our tour season.

There are 12 LEGAL bus parks on the streets. What we have also is a nasty regime of PARKING POLICE to write out infringement notices for illegal parking.
