And this is why diversity - especially in government (!!!) - should be appreciated...

My guess is that they are trying to keep the numbers down for the Olympics and are banking on the hope that the virus will disappear by summer. That's my guess. If that is in fact what they are thinking then it is a very reckless gamble that will end up ruining this country.

"Unless it's written in law, their brains are paralyzed when something happens," said Kurokawa, now an emeritus professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.

EXACTLY!! This should be the quote of the day. No. Quote of the WEEK.

Health Ministry official Yasuyuki Sahara defended the Japan's response, telling a press briefing that the government was trying to prevent patients "rushing into hospitals" and disabling their ability to deal with severe cases.

classic! this BS may work on the J public, but its not going to pass the international stink test buddy.

People are going to hold Japan responsible if it becomes endemic

That's exactly what's going to happen.

Abe and gang are pathetic. The civil servants are worse than useless. This country is being strangled by overtaxation and inept administration. Isn't there anyone who can shake up the LDP?

couldn't agree more.

HK & Singapore are doing a good job at stemming the virus!

Japan is doing a great job at hiding the true number of infections!

sigh...

That's not reflected in the death count, which is a lot harder to 'hide'. I doubt people are dying from pneumonia without being tested. Japan's policies are working without mass testing being necessary.

American will act of instinct to survive, not Japanese government

Blame the pathetically managed school system which is gripped in the bureaucratic iron glove that doesn’t allow anything more than a one size fits all education....it breeds more of the same!

@garfield1275

Can anyone name 1 nation in this planet which is dealing with this crisis efficiently?

'Efficiently' is a very subjective term. But some people name some. For example:

Nice to see someone stating matter of fact what everyone already knows.

Let's see if other new crises show up, it will be same response again.

Critics have accused Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of an initial lack of leadership.

No. At least, he has demonstrated marvelous leadership in instigating anti-Korean sentiment by provoking first (laser, forced labor, travel ban and etc) and manipulating the media.
