Everybody is gonna go there now because it's not crowded.

I believe that is supposed to be the results. Less people out, less positive Covid. Now if they would get strict on the establishments, I hear, are the biggest spreaders.

And, just like Japan to react to a problem instead of preventing one.

Good to see people needing to be told what to do rather than having them realize on their own that there is an ongoing pandemic.

On a lighter note, influenza cases are significantly down over past seasons. Only 57 nationwide cases through week 50 of this year. This could be due to mask wearing, an increase in flu vaccinations among other reasons. Remember, you can still get the flu even if you get the vaccine. Click on the link below to see a graph showing this and past seasons influenza numbers.

Corona is easily more contagious. It has an R0 of around 2.2 versus 1.3 for influenza. R0 refers to the average number of people that one sick person goes on to infect in a group that has no immunity.

A (tiny) shift in your trip timetable and route enables you to avoid crowds and other troubles. It assures more safety and comfort.

I feel like taking this crisis as an opportunity to review lifestyle in both individual as well as societal levels. Some sections in our economy depends heavily on crowds and contacts.

Look at other countries handle even small outbreaks with authority and speed. Now take a look at Japan...derp...

I fear forced isolation and prejudices by people more than the COVID-19 itself. When I feel slight fever, I take three tablets of "Lulu" and the next morning I am quite OK.

Good. Slows down the spread of Covid-19. It's not rocket science.

No brainer, the people arent going, not because of COVID, because the government isnt providing any free money to travel!

Think how many people may not have caught it, if they had done this sooner.

This is straight forward. This program should have been postponed a month ago. Conceptually there is some benefit (I know a couple of small restaurants who benefited from this) but certainly not now.

Which countries?

Only a few do that. Otherwise, look at South America, Norh America, Europe, the Middle East....

The Go To program was from the start a mess

Even before it started, it was an issue in June with putting so much money, 300oku en, into the management entity/ contractor of that program, then starting in mid July without Tokyo. It has been a problem from the start, though promoting for sure the the businesses in needs

What does a tourist look like?

The number of infections won't drop much because they've let this go on for so long that it is self-perpetuating now. It's community spread, now. Went to Osaka City this morning out of necessity and it was dead in most places, but the cafes and restaurants in my town were PACKED for lunch with people thinking, "Well, it's CLOSE to home, so it's like I'm staying home," so people who admit the rates won't go down are right. But, that doesn't mean you can't keep them from sky-rocketing.

I should bloody well hope so. Wasn't that the point of suspending it?

This GoTo Campaign has to rank as one of the worlds most stupid ideas of 2020. Effectively paying people to go on a mass tourism campaign while at the same time trying to contain a pandemic.

You have to ask . . . . would this have even got off the ground had the JP government stacked the panel that was advising them . . . . not with health professionals to contain and eradicate, but with individuals who wish to promote the intertests of business.

One problem I have always noticed in Japan is that when thete is a problem, authorities will try to pretend that there isn't a problem.

In my home country, the government has been very open honest and informative from the start. When the first lockdown began last March the PM came on TV and said it as it is. "There is a new disease, there is no cure, and some of us are going to lose loved ones before their time". Effectively - stay home.

Unfortunately, tourism is up in Arashiyama, Kyoto, and even Osaka, according to the news. Not at pre-Covid levels, of course. But, something like 20-30% increase from the previous weekend.

It seems like a lot of people are rushing to take advantage of GTT before the suspension begins on 12/28.

The government should have NEVER used that money to support a luxury like travel during a pandemic, however, support people who have fallen sick with COVID, those who have lost their jobs and or single parents whose income dropped so they can feed their children.

Does the government not understand the meaning of a pandemic??????

The government should have NEVER used that money to support a luxury like travel during a pandemic,

Nikai the secretary general of the LDP is the Don of the tourism industry and made Suga the PM and knew between Suga and Ishiba, Suga will be able to control and thats what he is effectively doing, Suga is eyeing continuing as PM after oct 21 and doing everything to please the kingmaker Nikai with the Goto.

They suspended GO TO Travel to prevent people travelling, just as everyone's gonna be travelling home for New Years anyway. Genius.
