Fishermen oppose release of Fukushima water into ocean

I don’t think anybody would support the release of the highly radioactive water from Fukushima into the pacific, except the Japanese government and TEPCO, of course.

It is probably being released as we read this.

Is the water actually safe to be released? I wouldn’t eat or drink anything from Fukushima as it is anyways

So much for cheap, safe, fuel. its more toxic, polluting, expensive in the long run.

Unfortunately the japanese population is only orally vigorously opposing even when it's a major matter.

All this polluted water helps cast a dim view on the safety of nuclear power. I have no suggestion on what to do with the water but it should cause mankind to work a bit harder on developing clean sources of energy for use in the future. Solar power, wind power, geothermal power and harnessed tidal power all come to mind.

This is Japan's problem, Japan should solve it without poisoning the world again.

We all know the decision has already been made. They just have to invite the Zengyoren just to say they've taken its views into consideration.

How do they possibly think it's okay to pour any dangerous waste into the ocean? Just because it's in the ocean and out of sight doesn't mean it's gone... the radioactive water will harm local marine life and spread through the current to other parts of the world.

I still avoid Japanese seafood when possible because radiation takes YEARS and YEARS to breakdown.

Area where had most used electric power from Fukushima nuclear plants is Tokyo.

Japan's authorities emphasizes safety of contaminated water but they try to drain it at only Fukushima.

They Will. Why ? The J- gov under the guise of the World Bank gave money to " develop" fishing and peripheral industries in " 3rd" world countries, while deploying associate industrial scale fishing vessels to fish in the said countries' waters, hauling massive quantities of fish but leave behind 30% for local consumption. Having no alternative for disposal of the Nuke waste. I think they did this knowing sooner or later they will have to dump it in their waters and use the money from "3rd" worlders fish to pay up, compensate and assuage their own fishermen. Clever.

Consumers do. They won't knowingly eat fish from that area if they know it has been rinsed in geiger soup.

Even if flushing a million tons of waste has no discernible effect on marine or human life, it will be a PR disaster for Fukushima and Japan.

I don’t understand a word. Where is the difference when summed up? It is now contained and radiates its amount. It radiates the same amount if it is released into the sea now. And it will also radiate the same amount if the containers burst, rust etc. and then that water sinks into ground water or flows into the sea later. Come on and be honest, remember what you’ve learned as a school kid, you know it too that the sum of such energy is always constant in any model or scenario whatever you try, don’t you!

We know that ocean water is constantly being circulated to cool the system, in most plants it is safe to release. But contaminated water should NOT and keeping in tanks is probably the best option for now until there is a better solution.

Is there a way to allow the pure water in the polluted water to evaporate into the atmosphere? Doing so would then condense the radioactive, polluted substance into a lighter weight pollutant?

Why should we care about children? Or our neighbors? We are old, just spend family money and enjoy and hopefully have a war before we die.

Oh let me remind everyone that when the Plant was already taking in too much water they released it back into the ocean. Remember, they only built those tanks afterwards so they wouldn’t be criticized more. I would not eat anything coming down that side of the Pacific Ocean. It is already bad enough and it stayed out of the news in Japan so at the time to win the Olympic Games. They will screw the fishing industry and release that water again. It would be better to flood the ghost towns that are vacant because of the radiation.

So what do you do when these temporary tanks reach their use-by date, Mark? Build more?

In the next earthquake those tanks will rupture.

Easy enough for them to turn a blind eye to the criticism of EVERY single other nation in the world, but now the government and TEPCO are spitting on their own people after they've kicked them down. Great job by Japan and Japan inc. once again. And I hope the nation doesn't complain when other nations rightfully refuses to buy fish products shipped from Japan, or suggest serving it to Olympians to "prove it's safe".

If a section of those rusting storage tanks were to give way during an earthquake, in a sort of mini tidal wave, the fisheries would be in a far, far worse situation as it all washes down to the sea.

Better a slow, controlled and diluted release to the ocean at the same rate as nuclear reactors around the world. Even pass it through those giant ALPS filters once more on the way down.

In the meantime they could avoid putting all their eggs in one basket, by creating a series of large evaporation pools to further help lessen the environmental impact.

They are concerned only about reputation (damage), not about risk scientifically assessed. The water will be sufficiently diluted before release, which is done normally and regularly by any active nuclear power plants around the world.

The storage water, whose occupancy rate is soon reaching a critical level, is more risky in facing various natural disasters and other contingencies such as crimes.

Dump it to the ocean!

Well, the Pacific Ocean is a vast place and very deep so, I wonder, if they put all that water into containers, or a tanker, and dumped it into the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean, realistically, just how much effect would that have given the dilution?

Is there a way to allow the pure water in the polluted water to evaporate into the atmosphere?  Doing so would then condense the radioactive, polluted substance into a lighter weight pollutant?  If the pollutant can be so condensed, it can then be disposed of as a lighter weight substance, e.g. combined with other substance to make it less radioactive; solidified and brought to places like Antarctica; solidified and sent to Outer Space . . . .

The radio active's concentration is under international standard.

I've lived here a long time and have heard that a few times before but do you have any real credible evidence?

The stored water in question is the same as water that is regularly release around the world without fanfare.
