Gov't considers extending COVID quasi-emergency in Tokyo, 12 prefectures

Considering Quasi, while Quasi means nothing,

6 ( +8 / -2 )

by two weeks from the original end date of Feb 13

I thought it was fixed already until Feb.27th from the beginning.

My favorite Bar has a sign already at the door, closed until Feb.27th.

Also the Starbucks I regular go changed their opening hours and have a sign at the door, until Feb. 27th.

Considering Quasi, while Quasi means nothing,

It means nothing, but still has a meaning in Japanese, 蔓防

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Considering Quasi, while Quasi means nothing,

exactly. Quasi measures for a Quasi government showing Quasi Leadership.

More oral gymnastics for show.

YUP!

Quasi Emergency created by LDP quasi brains.

I love the way the Japanese government informs the public. Its always first, "considering" to let you know what is coming, followed by the actual announcement 3 days later.

Quasi Emergency? What emergency? Schools all open, trains packed like sardines. Everybody all starting and leaving work at the same time. Nothing has changed. Virus spreading like wild fire in schools, and on public transport. Oh and as usual the government hasn't prepared enough people to give boosters, or readied the medical system. Literally, nothing has changed.

"...Japan is considering extending a COVID-19 quasi-state of emergency in Tokyo and 12 prefectures by two weeks from the original end date of Feb 13, sources close to the matter said Thursday.."

As we all know, this means the JGov ARE going to extend the ridiculous and useless Quasi emergency measures. This is how they announce policies, leak that they are thinking about it, get all the negative press out at the start where it is still possible to backpedal if needed, but generally lay the way for the policy actually being enforced. Laughable machinations by the inept oyajis that lead us.

"....Despite having placed 34 of Japan's 47 prefectures under quasi-state of emergency measures to curb infections, the country's daily tally further rose to 104,470 on Thursday, topping 100,000 for the first time and pushing up the cumulative total to 3 million cases...."

So despite this policy having no effect upon the rising numbers, lets just double down and do it more.....doing it more is always the answer....all the while people are losing their livelihoods. How about making private hospitals open up to covid patients? How about making sure people don't go to the hospital JUST because they have a cough and a sore throat? How about getting hospitals to change their policy of hospitalisation of everyone 50 and over who return a +ve test......all these would ease "the pressure" on the health system....but nah...it's definitely the bars and restaurants....

They are just making news headline. Thats all. Quasi is the only preventive action for this spread?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Government considers....sheesh. Bit late for that! What's clearly needed is - no, was action. If they haven't noticed it's already rampant as a result of the pitiful booster rate (4.4 percent -see link), low testing and ineffectual measures. Dithering clowns. Good luck everyone.

Excuse me Shinzo sempai...the quasi closing of izakayas at 8pm is having no effect whatsoever and numbers are increasing ..what to do?

Hmm..just quasi extend it Fumi kun, Omicron will burn itself out in couple of weeks and we can claim success...in the meantime put out some statetement about Japan still doing better than gaikoku and keeping our borders closed to the keep us safe from those pesky virus ridden aliens....and no , I dont wanna hear anything about the boosters now either, just blame it on gaikoku supply bottleneck again, nobody checks it anyway....now, time to hit that Ginza steakhouse.

Also, make sure this thing is taken care of before my upcoming rager in haru Fumi kun. I heard we are going to see sakura blossom early this year so chop chop!

Great. Instead of different people using bars and izakawa at different times, everybody has to squash together until 8pm.

Oh stop with this charade, Japan. This useless, pointless SoE will be "extended" 'til summer. It's not news. It's just another display of how you've dropped the ball on this situation.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 90.

I mean whole country of 120mil population.Data copies from yesterdays article where doscussion "was closed" for no reason.

Is number 90 alarming that we have to worry over?

It could be good to know how many deaths were reported in whole Japan yesterday for other reasons/heart attacks, brain attacks, cancer, accidents, suicides or died becaude of age/ and to fairly compare with 90 dead of covid.

By my opinion these so called quasi lockdowns solving nothing just make businesses hard time/restaurants etc/ and annoying others as trains are packed as always and yes people are working as always.May we see some numbers showing that these measures works and brought something good in past?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Not only is this pointless, it is also completely inconsistent with previous "emergencies". Back in the summer, the threshold to call an emergency was with much fewer cases. Each time the records are broken, the government and people's tolerance for the case counts get higher. They are going to reach the same conclusion that Covid is not going anywhere and we gotta have to live with it like everywhere else, they just do it at their own turtle pace.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

A lot more is known about COVID than 2 years ago. One thing that has been learned is that for omicron, resistance is futile. The longer Japan tries to deny that spread can be avoided, the longer people will suffer.

The rest of the world is opening up.

It's no wonder trains and offices are packed. No one knows what the hell all this means!

Make it clear. What's the current status, the predictions and risks?

Clear advice on preventative measures ("refresh" so everyone's aligned).

Clear vaccine/booster rollout plan.

Senior bosses at companies (forget the middle management as they will do nothing) should be told what needs to be done.

Adults can then make the call on what they need to do.

Oh you thought things would go back to normal?

Get vaccinated

I wonder if you or others who keep saying this live in Japan or understand the vaccine system here, as one can not just get vaccinated here by choice. One needs coupons that do not get sent out till after 7 or 8 months after your last shot, depending on prefecture. Most people in Japan still have a couple months to wait. In my case already more than 7 months but no coupons. Local health office said maybe next week as they are backlogged. Then I have to make a booking if there is a slot which could be several more weeks

Japan is considering extending a COVID-19 quasi-state of emergency in Tokyo and 12 prefectures by two weeks from the original end date of Feb 13, sources close to the matter said Thursday, as the country continues to see record-breaking infection numbers.

Sad to see Japan going in this wrong direction. Denmark has now acknowledged that the virus is around and we can live with it, and has dropped all Covid restrictions as of 2 days ago. Finland will follow next week, Norway is considering the same, and Sweden only has minimal restrictions anyway. Why cant we follow the Scandinavians, instead imitating the nonsensical NZ/Australia approach.

TOTAL lock down immediately.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Wouldn’t that “TOTAL lock down immediatelyyou’re demanding hurt hospitality business that thrive on alcohol & ‘imported wine sales’ ? Capitalism and authoritarianism don’t really seem to work well together, don’t you think?

nothing about the current quasi emergency has worked. cases up and up every single day.

Why not try something else besides just closing restaurants at 9pm?
