just lock these places down, if its not in the constitution then make it happen, tired of listening to the same crap each week.

Here, let me help you make a decision!

extend the FAKE SOE, and cancel the Olympics. Was that hard? Nope! I made the decision in 7 seconds.

Since vaccines are a mere mirage on the horizon, the awful, annoying SOEs are probably the only thing keeping the virus from taking over.

Hopefully they will not extend the state of emergency.

Most people could accept the state of emergency decision for the first wave, as there was no other action to take. The next state of emergency was accepted, because we thought with the creation of vaccinations, in the near term there was a path out of the pandemic. Now, there is a growing frustration and anger, as the government's negligence in the vaccination process means we are in an extended emergency and could face months more before enough people receive the jab, with delays and further suffering caused by an Olympics few want.

Will this lead to further political apathy and resignation (仕方ない), or can this be a turning point to activate citizens to get involved and choose better representatives, who will hold authority figures in the bureaucracy to account?

The usual slow release of information. First it is suggested by a "person of importance". Next it is being considered. Then a date on the decision is given..... Then BINGO.... we will be informed on Friday that the SOE is extended. A decision that was made two weeks ago!

If the SOE is extended government needs to ensure that all those businesses they are paying to stay shut refund their customers the monthly charge they pay for membership i.e. the gyms. I keep contacting mine but no sign of any refund.

"Japan's vaccine rollout has been slow compared with other developed nations, with just about 2 percent of the country's population having received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine."

Now why would this be a surprise!

How many times have the government said they are considering then NOT done it. I don't ever remember a time. So it's happening, let's stop the charade of indecision.

Yay, this just mean we can eat and drink beer after 8pm again let rinse and repeat

Anyone want to bet that the next SOE conveniently ends just before the Olympic 茶番劇 is scheduled to kick off?

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Ah yes.... Gov't to decide on Thursday to make an announcement on Friday to extend the SoE from June to another month, with the idea of having another meeting to discuss another possible extension.

I still don’t understand the difference with having an SOE and not having an SOE.

Just make it for the entire year already, so we don’t have to hear about it anymore. Does it really matter?

It has no meaning.

The logic (lack thereof) of simultaneously pushing for the Olympics and considering extending the State of Emergency is laughable. It would be funny if the potential health and economic consequences of holding the games in Japan were not so severe.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

If the current SOE gets extended (it will) then one can only hope that Japan Inc. will also extend employee teleworking opportunities and the transport system will continue to limit passengers. Oh wait...

Stop funnel tax money to US Pharma companies and start build ICU beds and form the staff with the money for god sake if apparently it is the variable which decide if we can live a normal life or not, btw the effective Reproduction Number is less than 1.0 (0.86)

I suppose all the oldies in nagatacho have had the vaccine, they are now safety :)

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The infected has likely spread the pandemic all over Japan to the point it can’t be fixed nor downplaying numbers are going to make the situation any better. Ignorance is bliss.

In today's episode of 'State of in Japan' is -

'State of announcing the announcement day for something that was considered for announcement days ago'

“Gov't to decide Friday on extending state of emergency”

They've already all but said they’ll do it, just get it over with. Shame I won’t get to celebrate my birthday properly though

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The definition of insanity - doing the same thing and expecting different results.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Of course they will extend it because that’s all they’ve got. Truly pathetic.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

spoiler alert- they have already decided. they just never feel like to tell us until right before the last scheduled weekend. Based on always including as many weekends as possible, it will be extended until June 21. then on June 18th it will become July 5th.

Then yay its Olympics time! irrashaimase!

Why does every Japan level of government do everything on Friday.

Announcements, Fridays, recieved notices in Friday's mail, etc...

I guess it is because they mess up so much if they tell use or we receive things mid week that is wrong, angers us, we would go in the next day to complain.

On Friday the next day everything is closed so you have to wait until the next week and hopefully you forget or calm down.

please close the schools down and get people to work from home and students to study from home IF you are asking establishments to close early and not serve liquor. And PLEASE get the Vaccines out so we can go back to normal .

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Of course they will extend it, in my mind that was never in doubt.

My God, I’m getting so bored of all this.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@Aly. No do not close the schools. We tried that and the mental health far exceeded any damage done to the young by Covid.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I’m quite sure they have already decided to extend the SOE. It’s just a matter of deciding for how long.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Aly. No do not close the schools. We tried that and the mental health far exceeded any damage done to the young by Covid.

Sam, its not only the young that get damaged by Covid- Its the whole society. we need a proper shutdown with a vaccine program if we are going to beat this thing.
