I'm mentally disabled when it comes to reading Japanese newspapers. This is worth checking out. It should also be helpful for my Japanese studies. Good to hear they're thinking more and more about the disabled in this country.

Oh, yes! Let's convert everything to comics for the adult children. Comics are for children! It really annoys me to see important notices done up with childish comic characters It's not cute or cool. It's just childish escapism. Grow up Japan!

I asked a NHK producer why a number of information programs are now done in a style similar to their famous Weekly News for Children. He said it is because the audience is increasingly elderly and cannot cope with a more traditional format. I suspect that is also true for some fraction of the cartoon-style things put out by local government. The cartoon-style with limited text is also easier to understand for foreigners with only rudimentary Japanese.

Yeah, but, there's another thing called, photographs. There is no reason for important notices to be depicted in a childish comic format.
