Japan fails to track N Korean missiles in recent string of launches

This was the true purpose of the GSOMIA, sharing of Korean radar feed to Japan and it will be cut off in November unless Abe san surrenders to Moon with a white flag raised.

That would be creating a long term problem for a short term solution. If they did that, it would teach Korea that they can back out of 'final and irreversible' agreements, thereby making any future agreement with Korea entirely useless. That's an issue that faces Japan with Korea forever, not just the short term while they come up with a replacement for things they previously received from Korea.

What you don't seem to understand is that by pulling out of a 'final and irreversible' agreement, Korea has pulled out the rug from any negotiations with Japan (and really any other country) forever. Korea can not be trusted on agreements anymore. Giving into their hysteria (I mean, come on, "Abe sand surrenders to Moon with a white flag raised"?) would be the worst thing Japan could do for the future of their negotiations with Korea, forever.

No, I think Japan's cooler heads will prevail, and will be focusing on finding replacements for their agreements with Korea. That's the only safe route forward for Japan. Korea is too volatile, unstable, and has shown that they are willing to rip up agreements at any time they want.

It's a shame that Korea ripped op the 'final and irreversible' agreement they made with Japan, unilaterally deciding it was not final, nor irreversible, and put forward nothing in its place, and instead went on to incessantly whine about Japan.

I was in the 'Japan needs to apologize and rectify what they did' camp, until they apologized, and came up with an agreed-upon rectification, only to have Korea suddenly pull the rug out from under it and get angry at Japan for not giving into the demands they have not made.

Japan is 1000km from North Korea while South Korea is within walking distance, who do you think will be affected more?

If Japan doesn't get involved with S. Korea, is less likely Japan will even be a target in the first place. They have a limited amount of missiles to begin with that can reach Japan.

Their was a war between North and South before... Remember? How much did North Korea attack Japan? Facts are a problem for some people. You can't trust a country going back on agreements. First the 2015 than the 1965 aggrement.

They did. They admitted the mistakes, made an official apology, and provided money to rectify it. Korea agreed with them on all of this, and they both agreed it was "final and irreversible", until Korea unilaterally decided it wasn't in fact final, nor in fact was irreversible.

I find it odd that any South Koreans would be happy to see a missile attack on Japan. Obviously the are not thinking even 2 steps ahead. The short version is: NK attacks Japan, the USA decides to attack NK. South Korea is obliged to support the USA. NK turns all its attention to South Korea. Any South Korean who finds joy in the thought of a NK bomb in Japan is cheering for a devastating war on the Korean peninsula where countless Koreans will die.

The Abe administration is looking for continued support to revise the constitution. This is another piece of the his agenda nothing more, nothing less. Japan is constantly being monitored by the US umbrella in accordance with the agreements set in place. Nothing happens as a surprise anymore due to the many high tech gadgets monitoring each movement around the world day n night the entire year. Machines do not sleep. So sleep tight everyone, if things in the media are reported as not being seen, think again. It happened for a reason.

Sounds like 4 Koreans annoyed that I pointed out how their country destroyed it's reputation by going back on things they explicitly agreed would be 'final'. And 'irreversible'.

And why doesnt Japan just park a few of it's Aegis ships in off the coast in international waters? If the Aegis can not pick them up, then there is a problem!

Missile defense is ineffective and it only encourages the enemy to build and fire more missiles. The only effective deterrent is acquiring capabilities to strike back in kind, that is, having your own nuclear missiles.

This is basically fear mongering at it's best. Really doesn't matter if it can be detected or not, these short range ballistic missiles were designed to avoid detection, that's why they are building these. Korea does have the advantage of having THAAD, but deployment in Japan is coming soon.

And FYI if one does land in Japan, it will be WW3 in that region...

The "problem" is quite easy to explain: SK borders NK and has additionally questionable bases in the Sea of Japan, therefore detecting a rocket launch in NK and to follow its path afterwards is comparatively easy. The problem comes with intercepting the non predictable course and here SK also "apparently" was not successful! Japan faces the additional hurdle not being able to detect a launch directly simply from its distance and not usable own land in the Sea of Japan. Low altitudes combined with irregular trajectories are difficult if not impossible to foresee. So GSOMIA can give radar information from SK to JP but if that doesn't help to defend, then what's the use? Some people apparently cannot understand the difference of detecting and tracking&forecast!

To come back to the political issue here, if JP "begged" SK to have the radar information also in the future, it would mean that SK can get through with any future breach of international binding contracts making them useless and also can broadcast to the world how right they are with everything in bashing Japan. So far SK could manage to persuade other countries or news agencies that the bilateral problems where both somehow SK's and JP's fault while putting the first move to JP although the connoisseur of facts know better. So of course SK has to somehow proudly shout out they could "detect" the missiles. Did they admit of being able to - or rather not being able to also track and forcast the course then? No, it's the same when SK papers jubilated that they won most of the WTO cases vs JP but failed to admit or even mention, that in the end the basic ruling was against them.

Vengeance at its best! Never tells your arch-rival(Japan) any incoming ballistic missiles from North Korea! Let them guess, scares and panic! Brilliant "Moon Jae-In"!

How many missiles were meant for Japan? How many launches do you think North Korea is detecting? How many missiles were meant for Japan? I believe the answer to both questions is zero. How often do other countries test their missiles? About as much as North Korea? Who pays for these fear mongering pieces?

Trump is willing to overlook the GSOMIA termination as long as Korea buys something from the US in return.

The US won't pressure Korea to restore the GSOMIA, Japan has to do it itself and restore the critical radar feed.

Korea does have the advantage of having THAAD

THAAD radar has no usefulness for the ROK.

The ROK operates a network of four long-range search radars taking turns to operate 24/7.

To do target search, the THAAD deployment requires two radars, but the THAAD deployment in Korea has only one radar, a fire control radar.

The THAAD deployment in Korea itself relies on the ROK radar feed as the primary warning. The THAAD radar at the THAAD deployment site is for fire control.

North Korea has 72 submarines.

If the Aegis can not pick them up, then there is a problem!

This problem was well known, and this is why people are skeptical of the Aegis Ashore's usefulness due to its limited detection range.

Admitting that there were some wrongdoings in the past and showing a little more of political will to engage in bilateral talks would have prevented all the fiasco of today. Japan was gaining more in trade with South Korea, more Koreans visited and were planning to visit Japan. They were enjoying a variety of consumer products Japan has to offer despite the Japanese's resistance to buy their neighbor's (electronics and cars among others). Of course there might be some level of competition. But it was suppose to be based on mutual goodwill and understanding.

But no. The Japanese Revisionists in power choose to have a fight with South Korea. For what? To tell South Korea that the honoring of the 1965 agreement, which is viewed by many Koreans as a symbol of military oppression of the late Park Jeong Hee dictatorship and an insult to human rights and democratic principles, is a matter of "trust"? I feel some part of the Japanese society failed to graduate from the Kamikaze mentality of the past. Sometimes their decision-making doesn't make any sense. :)

No it's not. The South Korean media are doing their best to cast the non-preferential export processing treatment as a direct disciplinary action to the court ruling. No, Japan removed South Korea from its preferred (trusted) export partner white list because of 156 re-export violations by South Korea to North Korea which Japan requested more information about and South Korea ignored over a 3 year period.

If it's not about dishonesty as you say, why is South Korea not coming forward witht he requested information?

Answer: it will open the door to more South Korean flaunting of sactions against North Korea.

You are climbing a wrong hill here.

Calling the Japanese revisionists without mentioning how the South Korean government squandered the money given to them by Japan on infrastructure instead of compensating individuals like they should have done?

That's exactly why the SK government proposed a 1+1+@ with Korean companies and the public money putting their share in the fund.

Why leave that out. It would put the last piece in the puzzle as to why Japan grew tired of South Korea's dishonesty after the wartime labour court ruling awarding individuals with compensation, when the South Korean government took the money intended for that purpose in the first place.

It's like revisionism by deceit, isn't it?

It's a shame Japan decided to go against trade rules with regards to South Korea (and claim they did not, then refuse to go to the WTO until maybe recently) over spite about South Korea demanding companies apologize and recompense forced slaves... they could really use the intel from SK, and clearly they are unable to do it themselves.

This is serious. Japan should go begging South Korea to admit it back into the intelligence sharing agreement (GSOMIA) else Kim Jon Un would nuke Tokyo without Tokyo being aware. I have all along called Japan's eagerness to punish South Korea for that court ruling childish play. Now you see the consequences. Abe must start waving the white flag and call Moon to apologize.
