Huge numbers as usual.

They are still counting "cases", as if the virus was still as virulent as the original Wuhan version. I guess changing govnmt policy is like turning around an oil tanker...

@distantcalm Well said. What an utterly pointless charade. Having said that, who would have expected anything else than an overreaction from the ever conservative Japan.

Omicron is still quite deadly. Take China which has today redeployed hundreds of thousands of doctors and nurses to intensive care units in preparation for an Omicron surge through the population of 1.4 billion people.

High booster rates and previous infections have made it appear less deadly in Japan.

The whole "zero covid" show in China is 100% political, and so is any news you get from Chinese sources, so "take China" is meaningless in regard to the actual virus. Is there any actual Omicron hospital emergency anywhere else?

Basic science 101.!. Omicron is by far and away the deadliest variant of Covid to date .!. It is NOT some cold or flu. The vaccines have and continue to prove their safety and effectiveness.!. There were no vaccines with Alpha, Beta, or Delta .!. And only marginal therapeutics at best .!. With all strains of omicron being more contagious and deadly than the previous strains, the mirage of mildness or utter ignorance of basic truths is what it is.!. This is not unique to Japan.!. All the gaijin here whining about masks need to give it a rest .!. Long before Covid, the Japanese people always wore masks.!, The case numbers are too high for many reasons but too many misinformed gaijin are stuck on anti mask . Anti vax mindsets.!. No mask is gonna save anyone in a closed or crowded environment.!. So avoid poorly ventilated places , particularly the bars and trains .!. Social distancing is still the way to go.!. So vax up , mask up and follow the 3 C’s.!. Lastly, every single country that is a member of the WHO reports their daily Covid case numbers.!.

Got any reference for that wild claim?

@WilliB

its kinda like how .22 is the deadliest calibre of bullet in the USA if you’re going by total deaths inflicted with it, because it’s used much more prevalently than larger more damaging rounds which are much deadlier on a case by case basis. They’re both technically more deadly but by different metrics. Coconuts are deadlier than sharks by the same reasoning mr McCarthy employs as they cause more deaths annually.

It is preferable to be infected with omicron versus the original novel virus or delta variant, but you can technically call omicron deadlier because it’s the one that came along when Japan eventually got its explosion in cases, and has infected the most people by far.

Thank you for the precise data.

I think it would be useful for the general public to know what percentage of people in each dataset had received a coronavirus vaccine.

Can we please please get that data, surely the authorities have it?????

2 ( +6 / -4 )

My reference is common sense .!. And if you can understand the 1/2 of all deaths in Japan FROM Covid are this year alone .!. Luckily, the vaccines have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations .!. Got it ? Wakatea? If not , sorry … there’s no getting through.!.

As for sour pickle …. It is preferable to get omicron vs any other variant because there weren’t safe and effective vaccines for delta …. Just wow ….

You were reporting them daily before what happened?

@Steven

The vaccines had higher statistical efficacy for delta than now for omicron. The vaccine is still effective for preventing serious symptoms including death, but it was even more so for the novel and delta variants.

Its also misleading to state that all Covid related deaths are actually caused primarily by the virus, rather than being a secondary or tertiary cause of death in the majority of cases.

Good low numbers as we head towards the Christmas period and look forward to enjoy the company of our lived ones and friends. The reality for most of the world is that life goes on as before and the dark days of restrictions etc are long gone.

For those in panic mode it’s time to take a deep breath and clam down, everything is ok.

Even the latest bivalent vaccine was designed for a strain of Omicron no longer relevant! The only reason the severe cases are low is because the variants have mutated to less dangerous varieties. Doesn’t it strike anyone else as strange that once we had a new variant name every wave now we just keep getting omicron variants?? And low and behold we have a bivalent vaccine that has an old omicron variant component.

Open up, PCR or triple vax entry abandonded, mask off, kids allowed to talk in school at lunchtime and in class as well as unmasked.!!!

@sanji

I agree with many of your points but do think vaccine/pcr entry requirements are working quite well and don’t need to be dropped just yet as cases swell again - perhaps after the peak has been reached and cases are subsiding. Even if the healthcare system has a good buffer and isn’t up near capacity currently, it might be wise to err on the side of caution versus letting easily or recently infected people zip from place to place all over the country possibly infecting numerous others for the few weeks they’re here.

Pickle, I would be fine with PCR for all as we know that vaccination doesn’t stop contagion. So, while the PCR negative unvaccinated tourists are guaranteed clean, funnily enough it is the vaccinated ones who are at most danger of bringing in new variants…

More people died from Omicron because many more got infected, but Omicron IS much milder;.

Your comment is like saying "water is deadlier than cyanide" because more people died from drowning than from cyanide poisoning...

@sanji

good point, I do agree that pcr negative unvaccinated visitors are safer for Japanese society (but maybe not for themselves) than vaccinated individuals who took no such test and may very well be infected when entering. Perhaps PCR for all for a little while longer?
