the virus does not infect them

*"*You’re not going to get COVID

are either of these statements unclear or suggest that sometimes you can still get infected or get COVID?

even at a 1% rate much less a 10% rate?

does NOT. NOT going to.

Im sorry the facts dont match what you want to be true.

The statements I posted were not ambiguous nor did they say 90%.

Only about 62% of Okinawa is fully vaccinated. The 80% figure is from the number of shots given, not the number of people who received them." So where's the link to the source of your infomation, and how do you account for your claim of an 18% disparity?

Google Japanese vaccination rate...

Seeing as how you are too lazy to do a simple search, here it is. You are welcome!

I dont post "statistics" that cant be backed up by facts!

Perhaps they could close the gates? No one I and no one out.

'Quasi-emergency'? Gotta love that phrase! It's either an emergency or it's not. Quit inventing quasi-terms.

What's a US base curfew going to do for communal spread outside of them, when it's already happening, and when there is no such curfew for anyone else? These guys know they are weak and powerless and cannot demand their people do it, so they ask someone else to do the work for them. Gobsmackingly pathetic. The only thing worse are the people who are actually surprised by the surge in cases. Those people need a very strong kick in the teeth.

There is a strong antivax contingent in the Marines.

Vaccinated people aren't getting sick from this and most of Japan is vaccinated.

But vaccinated people are passing it along to others, even though they may be asymptomatic, and those not vaccinated are getting sick, and some dying too.

Only about 62% of Okinawa is fully vaccinated. The 80% figure is from the number of shots given, not the number of people who received them. While 80% may be the percentage based upon the number of shots, it is not wholly accurate, and believe me, the Japanese government loves to play with statistics to make things seem brighter than reality.

The day that there will be an equal number of tests in proportion of the population between the American base and the Japanese population, if the percentage of positives is still higher for the Americans, I pay a round of beers and a ticket to a soccer/football/ music event with another 20,000 people (nobody requested a lockdown on those, even after reading of Japanese positive to Omicron attending such events) to anyone commenting here.

So I came into Japan early this week. Here's what is happening:

Tested before flight. Negative. Paperwork. No apps though. Flew into Haneda, did more paperwork and another test. Took a special hire car to the military base. Once here restricted to my room for 5 days. Now, on that 5th day I have to get tested again. If that is negative, I get to leave my room and walk around the base only. Not allowed off base. Once 14 days has passed I can go to my final destination.

I think it's fine. Following the rules. The fact that the mostly single active duty personnel that come in do take a military flight directly to a base and this is where the problem starts, well, as said above this seems like a Commander's problem. You have to keep people away from each other.

On the good side, the omicron variant has seen a lot less hospitalizations, and this is the big number, along with less deaths among those with comorbidities. This will pass.

Seems a little late for restrictions seeing that the infection is already spreading very quickly. Let's be honest, with or without the military involvement, omicron was always going to spread throughout Japan given that the economy can't be shutdown and there are still means of international travel despite tighter government restrictions.

As the saying goes, "It's a matter of when, not if."

Just lock them at the base!

well having lived in Okinawa for about 16 years, to the person who said why do they have to go off base? why do you have to go out of your house? To the American Gov shame on you for acting like the the people from America that other people in the world resent for acting like you can do what you want. let's hope that the America can take more responsibility , lets hope that it doesn't effect the jobs and the relationship with the Okinawan people

There are thousands of Japanese women and men working on US bases around the country. By now they must have already carried the virus into their communities. Besides US soldiers are freely going out in to the cities especially on weekends. Looking like a super spreader event is about to happen which could infect a large portion of the local population. Bit too late to stop it from happening now.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on Thursday asked U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to impose curfews on U.S. bases in Japan, following a recent surge of coronavirus infections among American military personnel, the Japanese government said.

Japan is a vassal state of the US ATM.

The real drama will come when Japan subverts US requests and aligns itself with Chinese interests.

Ask? are they not in Japanese soil? Japan should be ORDERING them to do so

Japan government is so annoying. Covid is here to stay!!! Are you gonna keep the boarders closed forever????

We have a very silly and ancient agreement in place between Japan and the US which allows US military personal and civilian relatives to fly in freely into US bases without any prior testing before departure from the US. On the other hand all civilian flights into Japan are restricted to Narita only where there is strict testing not to mention 14 days quarantine in Tokyo before being allowed to head out to other prefectures. Wake up guys why are there so many cases in Okinawa, Iwakuni and Hiroshima. This is going to create a super spreader in the country just because stupid policy makers who actually make all the rules are not able to protect their citizens. I always believe its the so called smartest people who are the most dangerous people on this planet. In most western nations even today masks are not being worn by the general public. Do not be surprised to see numbers in Japan reach over a hundred thousand if not millions in the next few weeks. God Bless

The problem is Americans are too fixated on their sense of entitlement, which they call 'freedom' to cooperate and wear masks.

981 is just an official number the real number might be more as instant PCR is not possible unless emergency. Walk-in PCR is not available and one must reserve time-slot for PCR test, which currently takes 2-3 days. It's sad to see that a mere PCR takes so much time. BTW PCR/RT-PCR is the basic and easiest part of molecular biology. Wake up Japan. Start investing in science and technology too.

the Sec of Defense has COVID himself, by the way.

Some, genius the Sec of Defense run military affairs

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Yeah that was really stupid of the US military to just stop testing by thinking vaccinated people cant transmit the virus. But then again, that was the narrative for a while, so I can see where it came from at first.

But once it was found to not be accurate, they really needed to start testing everyone regardless of vaccination status. to include all Japanese who also work on the bases.

13 ( +22 / -9 )

Why is it so hard for US military to stay on their base, and not interact with Japanese?

Its not rocket science, and should not require Japanese requests. The US Command in Okinawa is extremely weak.
