A very small percentage of the Russian population can afford to buy luxury Japanese cars. The export ban won’t hurt much

No self respecting oligarch would drive a Japanese car...

Lexus have some exceedingly aspirational, super-reliable SUVs, if that's your cup of tea.

What about used cars. In Vladivostok 50 % of revenue of that regent is create by the importation of used Japanese cars. It a huge business and no doubt if stop would create financial hardship for Vladivostok and there rich managers

This article should be in the comedy section.

Your ignorance of European attitudes towards Japanese cars is what belongs in the comedy section. Mercedes are often cheaper than some Japanese cars there.

They couldn’t pay Japan anyway, what are they going to pay with rubles or btc? Lol. Both worthless.

I wouldn’t trust a Russian company who said they would send me a bar of gold via fed ex. Would you?

see you guys at jvogue tonight.

Ingvar and bronco. It seem you are both backing a loser. Putin is a dead man walking. Do you actually think the rest of the world are going back down. No way, if Putin is been kill off by the end of the year. The Russian will give him up and will then start negotiating with EU to join. Dead man walking. Putin sign his own death warrant.

Winners: Russia's domestic car industry

Losers: Japan based exporters

This picture somewhat complicated by the fact that the biggest Russian automaker is French owned.

Within a week Europe will be hoarding rubles or Europeans will be freezing in the dark.

Either that or Russians will be burning rubles to keep warm.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Why not ban all car exports? Or all exports? Oh, that might hurt the Japanese economy right? So whats the point of banning only luxury car exports? Is Putin going to suddenly pull out of Ukraine because Russians aren't able to get their Supras or GTRs? Does this also include used luxury cars, like Porsche and Ferrari or just ones made in Japan?

Seems like a drop in the bucket.

This rule effectively keeps more Russian wealth inside Russia, whereas otherwise it would have been sent to Japan.

Sanctions don't work.

Russian wealth is no good to them if they have nothing to spend it on.

So the old men who sit in the Diet have finally lost all of their marbles. This decision can only hurt Japan's economy.

Bronco, no wrong. That region of Ukrain are pro Putin and still are. Where in 2014 Putin little green man we’re welcome with open arms. The only civil action was to allow the population of that area to became Part of Russia. This is totally different this time round. Today Putin army are running back to the border claiming they achieve the first mission, yeah what did they achieve. The lost of valuable, at least a billion in fighting hardware equipment. Yeah going strong aren’t they. They meet a greater army and run away. Or do your call that a strategic. I call it shite scared.

Will this hurt the Russian economy or the exporter in Japan?

How is selling cars to a country that pays in Rubles that are worth nothing and even if converted can not be wire remitted to Japan due to to the SWIFT sanction of any benefit to a car exporter in Japan?

5 ( +8 / -3 )

I don't think banning expensive cars is the way to go. Instead we should gladly take their money if they wish to spend it on cars. Is money going out of their pocket anyway.

I don't see the logic how banning export would actually help pressure them into stopping the war.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

It’s ok China will expand their market, these sanctions are pointless. We are just making the Russian market more attractive to the Chinese .

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Sanctions work.

Sanctions don't work.

Take your pick.

The two factories in Russia that manufacture armored vehicles (like those sitting duck tanks)

have stopped production.

Why?

Essential parts that were imported are not available because of sanctions.

I'll go with sanctions, thank you.

OssanAmerica.....

Your ignorance of European attitudes towards Japanese cars is what belongs in the comedy section. Mercedes are often cheaper than some Japanese cars there.

You are confusing oligarchs with the middle class. The super rich Russians don't drive Toyotas!

Is there any luxury Japanese car, can anyone name it? I mean Lexus, Infinity or Acura are just a bit more expensive than just mass market Toyota or Nissan, but pretty far from being called luxury...

Was thinking the same. At first I thought this article was about shutting down he gray market or whatever.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Wow, devastating, well that’s Russia finished! Perhaps something a little more damaging to the russki economy might be more effective.

Laughable.

You really believe those in Russia who can afford luxury foreign cars want to drive Lada tractors instead?

Sanctions work. Keep the squeeze on fascist Russia.

Mickelicious

Lexus have some exceedingly aspirational, super-reliable SUVs, if that's your cup of tea.

They are extremely well-made and well-appointed. They're just so damn ugly. That's the main reason we chose a German luxury brand over Lexus. We just couldn't get past their hideous appearance, despite the higher quality.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Not enough. Ban all exports now.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Just give one to me!

0 ( +10 / -10 )

Judging by how things are going for them in Ukraine, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Russians were planning to send in a convoy of troops driving Lexus sedans. So this might actually set them back a bit.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Instead of banning exports, just triple the price and let the foolish rich ones pay .

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Seems like it's more forms of Kishida & Hayashi trying to hold off Russian sanctions.

It's a bad news but still some good.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This move is just silly.

Japan shots itself in the leg again…

Mitsuoka? Maybe. But how many of those are being exported to Russia.

Ban on second hand junk cars could have been much more serious blow, but apparently this is what is being called "minimizing the negative impact on Japanese companies' earnings"...

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Doesn’t make sense at all. The rich oligarchs send a slave to Dubai and buy it there and have it delivered to Russia by yacht or air freight. And the bit ‘poorer’ ones buy a substitute out of Chinese or Korean luxury car production etc.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The GDP per person in Russia has done poorly under Putin, to where the average Russian is now poorer than the average Chinese. With a GDP per person of barely 10,000 US dollars, I can't imagine that Russians buy that many Japanese autos, especially the luxury brands.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

If they stopped buying gas no that would hurt Russia ...And Japan big time !

Mazda's skyactive nonsense hybrid would stop selling well if gas prices went over 200 yen a litre or so for regular.

Why doesn't Japan produce cheap electric vehicles ?!!!!

Coz they are addicted to gas!

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Will this hurt the Russian economy or the exporter in Japan?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Well one things for sure Russia wont be running out of gasoline or diesel or propane.

As for Japan's lack of resources it doesn't look good.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

While not economically significant, this action by Japan sends a clear message that it does not approve of Putin's behavior.

Yes - in Russia nobody think of Japanese car as "luxury"

very good - yes

But not luxury car for oligarchs

By the way - your info about political influence of Russian oligarchs

corresponds to the 90s of the 20th century

This will hurt Japan business.. right?

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

it seems that i may have better informations than Kishida,

so called luxury cars were very little part of total japanese car exports to Russia for a few good reasons.

western european part of Russian luxury car market wants mainly european brands and of course left handle drive cars/not available in Japan/.

eastern of Ural main market buying japanese right handle drive cars up to 2000cc/thanks to high duties in Russia and tax from luxury goods/,part of market is token by korean brand imports and chinese brands.

there were many cars produced locallu in Russia/both russian and foreign brands/.

in recent situation russian clients cant pay for cars from Japan as they are not allowed to TT funds from russian accounts to japanese accounts.as there are no new shoppings-there are not new exports.recently are exported cars purchased before japanese bank sanctions so literally from end of april there will be complete stop of export of japanese cars to Vladivostok.

as PM of Japan and person in charge who have agreed with imposing of sanctions afainst Russia Kishida knows this very well.

why does he plays this pathetic game even he knows that there will be zero exports from Japan to Russia soon?what kind of "light effect" he means for japanese cars exporters?does he mean that many companies will be forced to close own businesses in Kobe Osaka Toyama Maizuru Otaru???

this guy is really an empty suit and this is just one more greta evidence that he is just american vassal-getting instructions and following it accirdingly.not in japanese economic and national interests at all.this guy works just for american interests.

feel weird and awful same time as Japan have nothing to do with conflict in Ukraine and just because whitehouse managent wants Kishida works to ruin japanese economy and lives of ordinary japanese tax payers...just check prices od gas oil food and more to follow soon-all just because uncle Sam wants to show who is real boss here!

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

There wasn't any progress being made with peace treaty talks anyway- thats disinformation lies.

If Japan wants to be at war with Russia , China and Korea then history will repeat itself.

Japan is allowing the Ukraine conflict to negatively affect Japanese economy and unfortunately the prices for everything will get raised again.

Its counterproductive !

Probably only a temporary ban on exports however Russia won't want to continue to do business with Japan anymore anyway.

Dumb move kishida.
