And within the next month, Japan will pass Italy and Canada and lead the G7 in population vaccination. Quite an achievement.

That just means Japan horded them in the first place.

Right, horded also almost not used, Japan use Moderna and Pfizer mostly. Just give other brand for donation.

Japan has been providing domestically-made doses of AstraZeneca Plc's vaccine to other countries and regions that need them. An additional 300,000 doses are scheduled to be delivered to Taiwan on Wednesday, bringing the total to 4.2 million.

The nr.3 sucker that gave billion of our tax money to pharmaceutical companies you mean. They might as well publish a list of countries who spend the most cash for covid relief while bragging about it.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Hoarded? No. Unlike some countries just bought and paid for enough up front. The vaccine roll out here was in an initial sham, now a huge success. The initial plans to secure vaccines was right on point. Much like the UK. Very much unlike Australia and New Zealand who initially dealt with the Pandemic SO well but honestly made a dogs mess of the vaccine roll out thinking they could pursue a zero covid policy.

Positive news?? No??

Anything positive is not acceptable. If Japan was last on the list same people would complain Japan should have done more. Garbage.

Can't hoarded AZ no longer than 6 months. These donated doses go straight from the product line to the countries receiving the donated doses. Japan are just buying the doses for these countries. That not up to Japan. I am sure WHO is organising transport and insurance for delivery. Anyway Good for Japan to fork out for the costs. Kinda helps with world deplomacy for Japan poor refugee intake. I also predicted that Japan better the USA in vaccinating their population back in early June. Go Japan.

Lol, giving away AZ which they bought and now don't trust

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

The AZ given away was actually manufactured here. And AZ is being used for those over 40 who would prefer it and for those with allergies to the properties in the mRna vaccines. Lets state facts.

People need to read the article … locally made …. Not hoarded at all

@gintonic: And Australia could have avoided the second wave of Lockdowns if they hadn't pursued a zero covid strategy and started vaccinating back in the Spring. That was more my point.

Asiaman7,

Canada is already giving 3rd doses to it's citizens. In British Columbia we're close to 90% vaccinated.

yet Australia's vaccinate rate is approaching 70% their infection and deaths per capita are one of the lowest in the world, their GDP growth in 2020 2021 also better than the majority of 1st world economies.

theyve saved 1000s of lives and havent done severe damage to their economy in the process, id say thats a great achievement.

but but "my freedom caucus " will always state freedom comes before lives

Yes @wtfjapan - But if the PM hasn't been lazy, Oz could have achieved these levels of vaccination in May or June. Not now. They do only have ,23-24 million? people?

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

That just means Japan horded them in the first place.

Not really. At the time orders had to be locked in, clinical trials hadn't been completed and no one was positive which, if any, vaccines would work so many countries ordered more than needed for their entire population across multiple vendors.

yet Australia's vaccinate rate is approaching 70%

Not really, only just broke 60%. Their government tries to cook the numbers by quoting the percentage of 12-and-overs instead of the percentage of the entire population like almost all of the rest of the world.

Canada is already giving 3rd doses to it's citizens. In British Columbia we're close to 90% vaccinated.

As of Oct 16, 72.65% of Canada’s total population had been vaccinated. Japan was at 70.1%. Japan will pass Canada next month.

And no, “close to 90%” of BC has not been vaccinated, as you claim. Nearly 85% of eligible recipients in BC have been vaccinated.

Japan deserves praise for their generosity and helping those in need... well done!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Asiaman7,

Sorry my numbers weren't perfect. Here are the correct number. In Canada as of October 16th everyone 12 year's and older are 87.66% first shot and 82.71 fully vaccinated. In British Columbia everyone over 12 years old 85% are fully vaccinated. I'm sure since October 16th those numbers have gone up. And I'm wondering has Japan started vaccinating citizens 12 year's and older? If they haven't your numbers would be completely wrong. Have a great day.

Donations of quality vaccines is good, but there are always strings connected to this form of diplomacy. No country does things without expecting something in return in the future. Just hope that the favor requested later isn't something against the recipient's morals.

Being a wealth country, this form of diplomacy is expected. It is part of the entire "soft power" effort.

BTW, if China thinks Taiwan is part of the country, why does Taiwan need this sort of vaccine aid? Are they refusing all the Chinese-made vaccines and is China blocking Taiwan's efforts to acquire vaccines from elsewhere? Why, yes. Yes, they are.
