Tough to convince people to buy these products after they see what these radiations can do to you, even the safest radiations used for medical treatments can have a long term effect on the body, so how can people trust a radio active water in the sea food supply!???

Kazuaki Shimazaki: "But no matter what they do you can expect hostile foreign countries, such as China and Korea, anti-nuclear groups (both Greenpeace and in-country) and similar ilk to stretch it as far as they can for their own advantage."

Yeah... it's to the world's advantage that Japan literally POISONS the oceans due to negligence and incompetence. What else do you tell yourself to justify it? You do know that Japanese children will be eating the products, right? When Minama -- I mean, when the next disease due to such incompetence is created you can't come on here and say it couldn't have been predicted, or it's no one's fault, or it's a lie. You also can't say the US military or others are harming the environment off Okinawa by building the new base because clearly you and others who defend the release here don't care at all about the environment.

"In reality, malicious or not, Japan will not be able to prosecute those defamatory sources"

No, the reality is that any and all countries can boycott any and all marine products from Japan, and Japan can suddenly claim the ICJ has power and should do something, but Japan won't be able to do a thing but blame itself.

"For another thing, even if the source is domestic, actually go after it and we can expect people (including in JapanToday) to scream "cover-up" or "freedom of speech" or anything but be supportive and understanding."

Ah, the old, "Please cooperate or it'll be regrettable". You can always tell guilt and cover-ups when that comes out.

"So what else is there but to provide compensation?"

Stop building NPPs on fault lines. Stop building NPPs altogether. Stop giving them permission to operate well past the limit. Allow every single person affected to sue the government and TEPCO instead of making these preemptive rules where they will get a one-time pittance in exchange for never being able to ask again. Stop supporting companies that lie, cheat, and cover things up. Make TEPCO pay for every cost of clean up instead of further subsidizing them. Make a national power grid. Go green. I could list a whole myriad of other things that can be done to avoid this kind of thing, but you won't want to hear them.

It's an understandable choice. The facts are as follows. The water that will be released will most likely have a des minimis amount of radiation in them. But no matter what they do you can expect hostile foreign countries, such as China and Korea, anti-nuclear groups (both Greenpeace and in-country) and similar ilk to stretch it as far as they can for their own advantage. That of course is reputational damage.

In reality, malicious or not, Japan will not be able to prosecute those defamatory sources. For one thing, some are likely to be overseas. For another thing, even if the source is domestic, actually go after it and we can expect people (including in JapanToday) to scream "cover-up" or "freedom of speech" or anything but be supportive and understanding.

So what else is there but to provide compensation?

The way the government talks up ‘rumors’ it’s as if there was never a nuclear disaster in Fukushima at all…

According to Abe's cabinet members, it was all "Fake News".

"Fukushima Rumors"

LOL! Also known as poisoning the environment to cover-up the government's corruption and incompetence!

"The government will also set up a fund using 30 billion yen ($261 million) earmarked in the fiscal 2021 supplementary budget to purchase seafood products when demand falls and promote online sales of products by fishery groups."

Which means the rest of Japan will be eating the radioactive food, too! It will be bought by the government and resold to businesses that do not need to label the origin of the food like NPOs, restaurants, hotels, fast food chains, and manufacturers of supermarket/convenience store products.

These types of businesses only need to disclose the ingredients and not the origin.

Hope your kids are ready for it in their school lunches.

I like the term: "Fukushima rumors!

Water is the essence of life, it gives all living things life, it purifies all living things and should be respected by humans. Humans are the only animals who turely understand how vital water really is to all life on this planet, it is not ours to destroy and should be sustained, respected, and kept clean by humans to preserve life for all living things.

About this article, if this plan is to go ahead and this disrespectful deed is done, it should be released in Tokyo Bay and a plan should have already been put in place for compensation to all businesses affected by this utter disrespect to the environment!

All water was once dinosaur piss anyway, it's fine.

I strongly doubt the water is hazardous in any way, and I'll drink a glass right out the the tanks to prove it; given the chance.

compensating businesses

Who? Fishermen? Surf shops? Beach bars?

The government will also set up a fund using 30 billion yen ($261 million) earmarked in the fiscal 2021 supplementary budget to purchase seafood products when demand falls and promote online sales of products by fishery groups.

30 billion yen is a lot of money. So that is also going to fishermen?

What a joke. You should spend that money on connecting pipes to the tanks so people can drink from it. Or better still, buy US made ALPS that properly filters all the radioactive wastes, not just tritium. When jgov comes up with short cut solutions like this, instead of solving the real problem, you know Japan is doomed.

What a great idea, they should just create a ministry of false rumors and sue the pants out of anybody who says anything they don't like and is more than likely true.

Money would be better spend in a Tritium Removal Service.

There's some countries with the necessary tech already.

The Japanese government on Tuesday decided to set, within a year, standards for compensating businesses that suffer losses due to rumors that may emerge when Japan starts discharging treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea.

Yeah lets compensate businesses for "rumors" related to our environmental depredations and hotel owners and travel agency owners for any financial difficulties they have been having.

The working public in a pandemic?

We might get around to a working plan after a series of roundtable meetings and implementation protocols determine the best vector to deliver assistance to them.
