Seriously?

Given the political apathy here, how many Japanese in London are remotely likely to go to a political rally in London?

And why just London? Political rallies are nation wide. As are popular tourist areas.

Last week target was Manchester.

Next Week? Could be the Cotswolds, Stratford-upon-Avon or put close your eyes and stick a pin in a map.

meaningless advice at best.

on another note.

lets hope some people can keep their mouths shut this time round and let other people do their job first!

Besides London I would reckon Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinborough, etc are aso targets.

Especially during the festivals, etc when the population swells with visitors.

Blattamexiguus,

Why the focus on political rallies? The story also mentions major sightseeing spots, department stores, markets, & concert venues. Agree about singling out London. It may be meaningless, especially in an era when travelers have constant access to breaking news in their own language, but it's pretty standard practice for a state department or foreign ministry to issue such warnings after incidents of this nature.

Gotcha. You're right, at least as far as tourists go. "Let's travel to London to show our support for Corbyn!" That said, some travelers might just happen upon a rally. I'd add that such warnings are also intended for Japanese residents in the UK. I once read that some 30,000 live in England alone.

The number of Japanese tourists and students to the UK and other European countries will continue to drop. Why risk getting blown to pieces while you can do similar things in countries that basically don't have that kind of unnecessary risk.

Imo all European cities West of Helsinki-Berlin-Rome are potential terrorist targets ( I mean primary targets within Europe).

1 ( +4 / -3 )

My follks back home are not worried on that score.

Happens you take a knock and move on. Life happens.

Those police look scary.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Same here pacint but ppl from relatively safe countries tend to stay away from potential targets. Thousands of Japanese and American visitors have cancelled reservations to western Europe in recent years (as an example).

If I were a non euro going to Europe for the first time this summer I think I would pick Baltic and/or Slavic destinations. Beautiful countries, fairly cheap, not overly crowded in summer and reasonably safe.

We were the border between east/west, know both sides.

Hungary used to be dead cheap for an day outing.

Sister is now an area manager for a bank in prague.

It's a sad day that a Country has to warn its Nationals about Travelling to and around the UK.

No one takes Islamic extremism seriously. Particularly adherents of Islam - unfortunately. Islam must be reformed from within. Modernization cannot be imposed from the outside.

Actually there is not any way that one can avoid an attack.

Plan a day out in London, turn a corner and there may well be a demonstration as I experienced in front of the National Gallery last week.

Thr 7/7 bombers blew up a bus and that was nowhere near a demonstration.

The Japanese gov's advice is therefore of little relevance.

However, I'll continue to visit my hometown as I do 4-5 times a year-terror attacks or not!

Continuous attacks makes U.K. to not fit for tourism and any other visits!

Hold on a minute. Did they issue the same warning after the Brussels and Paris attacks? If they did, I don't remember hearing about them.

How about a bit of perspective here? If we live our lives in fear, they've won, haven't they? Is that what we all want...?

3 ( +10 / -7 )

No they didn't.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It is important to avoid busy areas with lots of people as these could be potential terrorist targets. Anyway the Cotswolds and the English country side is very popular with Japanese tourists. I believe they would feel much safer in those areas.

With Immediate effect, travel documents should be required for movement within the UK, failure to provide them will result in immediate arrest or even termination.

Police State UK.

potential targets in London, including sightseeing spots, department stores, markets, concert venues and political rallies.

In other words, stay in your hotel. Ironically, it's probably the safest time to visit London. The police are on high-alert and are everywhere checking everyone and everything that may be suspicious.

It seems the Islamic mayor of London has failed in his campaign promise to make sure this never happened in London.

Happens you take a knock and move on. Life happens.

That kind of thinking reeeeally worries me and makes me more secure and confident for voting for Trump.

Rationally there are hazards where ever you are or go, even sitting at home there is a degree of hazard, food poisoning, electrical fires, poisonous chemicals, falling down stairs, falling asleep and drowning in the bath. Step outside your door and you could be run over by a bus. Go abroad and you could be drowned in a tsunami anywhere near a coast, crushed by a falling building in Japan, South America or Italy, shot by a mugger or some other gun wielding nutter in the USA. The choice is endless. Islamic Jihadists don't differentiate, anywhere in the world that does not adhere to their warped dark age superstition is the enemy, so they can and will hit any soft target they can. Everything else is just risk assessment.

Don't see why this is news at all. The Japanese Foreign Ministry through their Consular offices have been sending out email alerts regarding terrorist attacks, crimes, etc to Japanese nationals for a long time. In the U.S. it has been going on since a little after 911.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Did the Japanese government issue a travel advisory "warning its nationals to avoid places of what it calls potential targets in Tokyo, including sightseeing spots, department stores, markets, concert venues and political rallies" when a nutter ran people over with a van in Akihabara and then went on a stabbing rampage some years ago?

There is no need for hysterics or cancelling trips overseas when exactly the same things happen in Japan.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It's incredibly sad to hear a travel advisory warning for the UK, but in this case it's the right decision. Combined with the Milan stampede incident on the same night, I don't think it's very safe to be near large crowds in Europe at this time

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japanese government contribute to fear and hysteria. Ridiculous.
