There are nearly 100 medical schools, public and private, here in Japan. I suppose we are going to see at least that many articles, as each gets "outed" for the same thing?

Yes, they do have discretion. That discretion, however, does not include the ability to discriminate.

One of the reasons why we're hearing about this yet again, and why yet again nothing will happen. What element of Japanese society is NOT embroiled in this kind of scandal and/or padding this week? It's no wonder "Made in Japan" isn't worth anything anymore.

By "discretion" I take it he means "offer places to those who pay sufficiently large bribes".

If this university receives no public funds whatsoever then they can set their own entrance criteria, but that still does not give them the right to discriminate against any particular group. They should also publish their method of selection and adhere to it.

From their home page I see they receive large sums in research grants from the government. If they wish to continue to receive those grants they should correct their discriminatory entrance exams immediately.

@afanofjapan - Yours and mine both. At least one of my daughters has already been eyeing a few schools in the US. My wife (japanese) definitely sees the difference, and she also wants our daughters to look outside of Japan for university, even high school.

As a foreigner I can only work part-time in hospitals. My partners extended family (bar 2) are all doctors or medical researchers and one is a med professor. The male side only have to go to med prep school for 2-3 years then get accepted. The female side 4-5 years to get accepted. One year in the prep schools is close to a new Kei car. Then there is medical university fees. It is far too expensive to dream your daughter will become a doctor, but your son...OK.

Male sure your daughters look into the following scholarships for Japanese citizens to study in the US:

Yanai Foundation/HLAB: $70k a year for 4 years. Students must apply to one of the schools in the list.

Grew-Bancroft: Another full

ride to liberal arts colleges.

Softbank: This one I don't have much information on because it is quite new.

Those are the big three. Being awarded any one will go a long when in preventing your daughter's from falling victim to the misogyny inherent in Japanese society.

The entire country is biased against female applicants. The government would prefer they stay home and shine their husbands' shoes, like they used to do back in Showa 29...
