I hate to say it, but until new cases are at zero for 2 weeks, Covid-19 ain't going away. Don't forget, New York was at 1 case not too long ago. Thats all it takes folks. Just 1 case, then, cluster, cluster, boom! Back to square 1. Its gunna be a wack-a-mole game until there's either herd immunity or a vaccine.

I can't say I've been paying attention, but now the official emergency is over, is the government still telling people with any sustained cold or flu-like symptoms to go through the proper procedures and not just turn up at a hospital? If that is what infected people are doing, we will continue to see flare ups of the disease.

but saw a surge of 43 cases in a period of six days through Thursday, 21 of which were reported the same day alone.

Sounds like the start of a second wave to me. The fact that 21 were reported on the same day shows how rapidly the virus can spread.

However, if most of the cases are occurring in hospitals, the impact might be limited in the wider community.

Hasn't they're been an increase of 22 infected people in Tokyo on Friday, 29th May?

Morons. You can't be in a SECOND wave when the FIRST wave is not finished.

Thank you for your frank candor. I was thinking it seemed early for a second wave I was expecting to maybe come in fall, but you put it squarely and I feel like a moron for not seeing it and also deserved a calling out. Others may be perturbed by being reminded of occasionally or often being a moron but they need to get over it. You hit the nail on the head.

Anyway, the corona virus is not going away even if numbers are low in summer, and the intentional lack of testing means we won't have any close idea how many cases there are or were at any point except to say, there were always MORE. So the numbers should not come as a surprise unless one was fool enough to believe we were being given numbers as accurate as the government could provide.

Yes, I don't know what time this article was written but it completely glossed over the fact that Tokyo had 23 infections Today, 15 yesterday, 11 on Wednesday, and 10 on Tuesday. If you think we're not at the beginning of a second wave here as well, then either you're not paying attention, or you're in complete denial.

The aim was never to lock down the virus to death, it was to give the health sector breathing space to deal with the cases which needed hospitalization. To not have the hospitals over run.

Why does it feel like that's been forgotten. There are only two ways out. Either you get it and create the needed antibodies or take a (non-existent) vaccine for the same.

Hope our Fukuoka-ken based posters are staying safe.

Something is definitely kicking off in the Fukuoka area right now. Most reported cases today. Don't take any risks if you're in that area...

Morons. You can't be in a SECOND wave when the FIRST wave is not finished. It is a second PEAK... or maybe just the start of what will become a peak. Second wave will come in the fall, with flu season.

Kumagaijin: "I hate to say it, but until new cases are at zero for 2 weeks, Covid-19 ain't going away."

True, and even then, when you are the second-to-worst tester in the world, it's probably way higher to begin with.

How many times must we go through this before people accept the most practical way forward is to treat it as regular virus . The low mortality rate doesnt justify the constant disruption.

You have to look at the virus in its entirety. Have a look at other nations. Japan's dodged bullets thus far, better than Neo in the Matrix. Caution and a watchful eye (and TESTING!) is needed now, not blithe attitudes towards it (regular virus? what does that even mean?).

I suggest clarifying some key terms such as "second wave." Info should preferably be address in a quantitative manner. Otherwise analysis and public discussions including one here in this forum would be futile. What I think of a second wave may be largely different from others (BTW, I'd prefer to call the latest virus resurgence if substantiated "a third wave"; the second hit Japan in later March imported from Europe).

100% agree

Also seeing as the government has increased hotel beds and hospital beds it would suggest that number of cases that would require another s.o.e should be much higher.

This is not the ocean. This is not a wave. It is just a pandemic that is alive and well until we find a cure. Waves are in Waikiki.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference that the central government is not considering re-declaring a state of emergency in Fukuoka, where a total of 199 cases had been reported by Thursday.

Need to get the decision making process into the hands of actual Public Health professionals

King Abe Kanute can declare the SOE over but the virus doesn’t have ears so....

and

Fukuoka Gov Hiroshi Ogawa told reporters, "I'm very surprised and have a strong sense of crisis.

If that is so then why are hospitals in Fukuoka not prepared well enough to prevent infections spreading in their hospitals?

Hardly a wave, they could have just said “more new cases”.

Moshi Moshi to all my fellow expats and friends living in Japan. The only reason why they call this a second wave is because they most likely was not testing as a rate that is needed and hiding numbers so they can all open the mark at the same time. Its really funny how everyone in the world are opening their economy at the same time and thinking all will be fine. Death is imminent at this stage with the uncontrolled Pandemic in Japan. But is this really happening or is this all nothing but Proganda and a Hoax for the world goverment to take control and fear monger all of us? Starts to make me wonder. I guess its time to go to hospitals and start recroding whats really happening because I think the media is not speaking enough and might be hiding something. NO i am not a conspiracy theorist but I tend do always wonder is my symtoms CCP virus or alergies as I have been staying home locked up in my own gaming and PC lab while working from home for that last 4 months and cant seem to find an answer. Is this real? or is it just GOVT proganda? I hate to say this but I am just going insane perhaps with all this going on. Not mentally good for all of us. Hope all of you are safe!
