Kobe Steel's possibly sub standard products in a nuclear reactor - nothing could go wrong could it?

A Chernobyl could have happened as a result of this particular negligence, if remained hidden. Those responsible would have been shot and arrested in USSR. In Japan they apologise for endangering the whole nation and just move on, producing stuff "honestly" this time? These extremes are both wrong.

What is the point of the delay? They are going to restart them regardless of the use of Kobe Steel in the plant.

The wheels on the bus have fallen off but the driver has his foot on the accelerator and refuses to stop. Substandard management faulty data nuclear industry corruption rife political ineptness this bus is heading for the cliff.

Well seeing as all that's required is a bow and several moushi wakes, pretty sure we're in safe hands.

This is the only kind of thing that might lead to actual punishment: big business being delayed as a result of negligence.

As the population aged rapidly, many of the old salaried men are tired & disinterested, so from a social angle more and more of such cases will appear. The Japanese "craftsmen" are being eroded both by realities of age and changing attitude among the young.

When people in positions of responsibility accept filthy lucre or other, ahem, "inducements" to look the other way or fiddle some figures, etc., how do they look themselves in the mirror again or sleep at night? I honestly don't get it? Do they think it's a victimless crime or is it a case of "everyone else is on the make so why shouldn't I get a slice of the action too?" Once too many people start thinking and behaving in this way, a society crumbles rather quickly.

@Civitas...

the thing is, about this and many many other similar situations everywhere, in which people in positions of responsibility act irresponsibly, having disastrous effects on the environment, fianance, and we the little people… is that they have no problem looking in the mirror because they just don't give a toss…. therefore no amount of disapproval will change anything, unfortunately….

@starviking - Considering that the recent "quality scandals" have not revealed any mishaps caused by them, I doubt there will be any problems, especially as peripheral equipment is involved, not stuff inside the reactor.

Um, you say what? How about Takata airbags for starters? They are up to 26 deaths and over 100 injutires. Then, how about the 120,000 people displaced by the man-made meltdowns in Fukushima turning many of them to suicide? Or, how about the 11 people killed when that tunnel collapsed? How about the 10's of thousands of people who have had to move out of their condominiums due to falsified and faulty structural work? However, you are correct in saying there have been no mishaps at the nuclear plants, but you left out, "so far".

In that order presumably!

I was expecting this.....

@Star viking - I was also going to comment on Chernobyl as well. Completely wrong type of reactor for that type of result. The RBMK had many known design flaws.

Could the use of sub standard steel lead to core damage or release of fissionable inventory? Yes it is possible but it depends on where it was used.

Regarding the sub standard products; No one commenting on this website has any idea where this steel is used

The real questions that should be asked of the utilities are; 1. Do you know where all the steel is used? 2. What technology will be used to detect potential defective product? 3. What actions will be taken if/when it is found sub standard steel is used where it could lead to damage to the core?

Disillusioned,

Um, you say what? How about Takata airbags for starters? They are up to 26 deaths and over 100 injutires. ...

Maybe you missed it in your haste to write a scathing reply, but I wrote "recent "quality scandals". Maybe you remember them? Nissan, Subaru, Kobe Steel, Mitsubishi Materials - ring any bells?

Good questions, but be careful, the people who populate this site are unforgiving of people who attempt to burst their bubbles.

I read recently that the problem seems to lie with acceptance of tokubetsu saiyō, that is products which don't quite meet the specs, but because the spec is 'over specced' there is a willingness to accept them.

Wrong type of reactor for a Chernobyl-like result.
