I just find it very strange that a fictional character would get any postcards.

Does Paddington Bear or Mickey Mouse get them?

I wonder how many of these cards are from women over 30.

Even as a fictional character Kumamon is far more intelligent than the media blabber bots, bureaucrats, and pols here.

Someone ought to tell them that behind that cute bear exterior is just a piece of extremely profitable marketing that is fattening the bank accounts of a select few.

If only you were more informed about the overall economic benefits that Kumamon brings to Kumamoto Prefecture... That 'cute bear' has generated a lot of revenue for the prefecture, through tourism and product sales....

And if it was just about the 'money'. Kumamoto Prefecture wouldn't grant usage rights free of charge to anyone who uses Kumamon's image (as long as the product helps to promote the prefecture).

Finally some great news!

Imagine if these people had sent them to a living, breathing, human being in a hospital somewhere and with no one to contact. This is why it is every man (woman, etc.) for himself here in reality, with mostly disregard for their fellow human beings, and why we constantly hear reports by neighbors of, "I always saw the boy and he was so pale... and I could hear crying... oh... and I really wanted to do something...". I remember after the major earthquake in Kumamoto how sickened I was by how much time and effort people poured into crying over Kumamon not replying on his website, while ACTUAL people were suffering. Some people devote themselves to helping others, some only pretend they would and do this kind of thing.

Maybe local officials can put this to use and have Kumamon ask people to write to the less fortunate VIA him, and he can put a cute stamp on it and give the people a chance to pat themselves on the back?

People are lonely and they want to belong to something whether its real or just imaginary. My take as long as they are happy I am fine with it, because its is not bothering me.

You guys are right---Santa/Father Christmas gets letters, but let's face it...those are in essence small kids asking for gifts
