Strong quakes jolt areas near Mt Fuji, Wakayama

Is Mt Fuji waking up?

The whole Kanto area has been pretty active for the past 2 months. Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa and now Yamanashi. All related? Hopefully just gradually releasing some built up tension.

And a M4.1 earthquake, registering 4 on the Shindo scale, a few hours earlier at 02:17am.....

Both epicenters in the same vicinity and both quite shallow at a depth of 20km. Hopefully all of this seismic activity is just gradual release of tension and not a foreshock to something bigger to come.

And another one a few minutes after that. We've had quite a few of these up here recently, small hit and run jolts that you can hear coming from afar.

Keeps you on your toes I suppose.

The news is quite disturbing, no updates from experts so far.

Not a huge one, but that's a good rattler.

Anyone ever been on a Shinkansen ripping at full speed when a decent-sized earthquake occurs nearby? What do they do, stop quickly? Slow down?

I have. They stop the train quite abruptly. In my case we were deep in a tunnel and remained stationary for around 30 minutes. The lights even went out for several minutes. Not a fun experience.

My good lady wife, a geologist, is expressing concern that this could be time Fuji-san wakes from her 300-year nap.

It might be a good idea to get plenty of supplies in.

With a bit of luck, you'll have 'em for the future but won't need them right now.

Series of quakes here and there the last few days. Quite concerning. I got up for my morning run but didn’t feel any vibration although the alert from Yahoo did pop up on my phone.

Am having a vision that there is a big tragedy coming in before end of this year. Which located south side of Japan. But hope and praying it wont be happen. With Gods power… Amen

another one in the same area shindo 5-......I work in Hakone right below the volcano crater....that's a little too close for comfort

Little by little the difference between quakes caused by magma movement and those caused by shifting tectonic plates is coming to be better understood.

Two sizeable earthquakes in two days. Doesn't bode well...

If you look at the data, there is no major increase in quakes over in recent years.

That spot near Fuji has had quakes of the same size for at least the past 10 years.

Saying that, in Japan a large quake could happen at any time. The only thing you can do is be prepared.

There is every point of stocking up on food.

And Fuji isn't a super volcano.

Hakone is a bigger threat to the Kanto area if it popped. Calderas are nasty.

Thats 2 strong ones 2 days in a row. I wouldn't be surprised if there was another one over the weekend.

I lost count as to the number of quakes the Kanto region has gotten over the past 30 years and I include Mt. Fuji Yamanashi/Shizuoka/Izu/hakone in the list.

And every time 2 or 3 happen near or at the same time, we get the " oh get ready for the big one" or " Mt. Fuji is due to blow", etc...

Yeah I have my disaster kit all ready but I expect in my area of Tokyo it is more likely I will need it do to flooding before any major earthquake runs me out of my house.

Relax folks this is just normal life in Japan.

Hakone hasnt had any meaningful activity for the past 2900 years.

Fuji-san on the other hand is still an active volcano. Its last eruption in the 1700s.

These patterns are starting to match what is theorised for the Hoei eruption. Not to be concerned is a bit naive

Quakes happen every year. So use to it by now that it would feel weird not to feel any this year. Most of us don't even care anymore and immediately resume our business after the shaking stop. I hate flood season way more than quakes.

BTW: Mt Fuji is due. So, no point down voting the reality of it erupting again at some point.

yeah its going to explode one day and everyone in japan will be dead that's the reality. weather you like it or not..... lets hope we are in harmony

The really big one is just around the corner… take care everyone! Keep enough cash in hand ( ATMs and credit cards won’t work ), store lots of drinking water and canned food! These are the perils of living in Japan!

For which country do we locate the most earthquakes? Japan. The whole country is in a very active seismic area, and they have the densest seismic network in the world, so they are able to record many earthquakes.

Fuji San is not so innocent, it has a lot of pent up anger, beneath it surface ready to explode
