I don't know what Japanese media you watch/read. As far as the media I watch and read, Japan Today included, the level of cation is more than appropriate and nothing near sensational.

The rain and wind seem to be avoiiding the Hanshin area, despite everyone on telly telling us it's lashing down right now.

Well, its absolutely pouring down in my part of Hanshin. The wind is strong and the rain is getting harder by the minute. I am not sure if its dangerous but I feel content to be sitting at home, nursing a single malt, without any thought of heading out in the car.

The rain and wind seem to be avoiiding the Hanshin area, despite everyone on telly telling us it's lashing down right now. We drove back from my mother in law's earlier. No traffic, the roads were like the ones you see in car ads.

ALL of the weather sites on the Net were warning about the typhoon, not only NHK or JP news/weather orgs. (As an example, the "JT" article above is just a wire story from Reuters.)

NHK and JP media have been no more hysterical than any other regarding this storm.

BTW, I'm digging the way the storm has turned out so far. It started raining heavily about an hour ago. But, no wind. My yard gets the water. And, nothing gets blown over/away. Sweet.

Eighteen people, including a five-month-old baby, became trapped on Wednesday when a river rose suddenly as they were having a barbecue.

That's just bad planning & not paying attention to the weather.

Emergency Preparedness is the focus and I thank all Governments and Municipalities who set aside a big budget for it. Forwarned is Forarmed and this can save lives. Kudos Government of Japan.

Eighty people have died from the heat in the two weeks from July 29, with 31,100 taken to hospital.

Counter-intuitively, this relatively weak typhoon may actually be saving lives.

At least typhoons keep people at home...

Garypen, so long as the rail doesn’t wash any seeds or plants out of the soil, it will do them good. Provided you get some sun after you may get a bumper crop! Silver lining?

How’s the weather around Osaka area near Namba, schedule to land Kansai Airport on 8/18. Plan to do some one day trip nearby, last time I checked the storm is moving NNE, hopefully everything is back to normal when I land, my only concern is Shinkansen service to Tokyo, I want to spend 4 days there next week.

Big bust. Nothing. We had more wind earlier this week. Very little rain. Could have left everything out on the deck no problem at all. Local trains are running without issue. People stuck due to JR closures are wondering why right now they are stuck. Tomorrow will be a mess for travelers.

Stay safe, friends. It's fairly windy here, shutters are making noise and I can't get much sleep.

if I lost my power, I would just eat my ice cream.

Best line of week.

Pissed down during the night, the window frames in the living room always leak in heavy rain, but luckily we put out pans before going to bed.

The approaching typhoon was a great excuse for us to leave the Obon tedium early. It's mostly just sitting around watching awful telly and lots of passive aggressiveness about what to eat, who's going shopping and who's going to cook it.

@ farmboy

Well 4 people out of 2 articles sure is a number ...

@ zichi

Do you have a generator ? Your ice cream would be screwed in there was an electricity shut down.

According to JMA, it is going to follow Japan coast then land in Japan again in Hokkaido.

North of Osaka heavy rain, not much wind in the front part but the back part is more windy.

So stay safe everyone.

We prepared for the storm. Stocked up on Tuesday. Beer, sake, water, ice cream.

Baked bread and made tandoori chicken, tandoori large prawn. Made a beef stew with potatoes.

Closed all the metal shutters and turned the ac on. Checked out the nearest evac center.

You're so great

Luddite,

Yeah,

The Japanese media 'Cry wolf' too often.

I can recall many a time where the news has been reporting about an ominous approaching typhoon with the reporter standing on a beach wearing a helmet, ranting incessantly with exaggerated arm movements while the waves in the background were more placid than at my local pool, not a cloud in the sky and the trees as unwavering as a Coldstream guard.
