New immigration rules affecting Japanese school in Austria

First, Japan has no right to cry foul about immigration laws. Second, it sounds like the teachers were just plain lazy. You don't let your visa expire in ANY country without obtaining a new one first, or leaving very briefly and coming back, thereby opening a new "free visa". The Insurance thing sounds like a scam, but all the same, they need to make themselves aware of the laws and do what's necessary, plain and simple.

Why is the Japanese School singled out. Other International schools, etc face the same problems.

Japanese teachers were ignoring the law.

A similar thing happened to me ages ago in Britain. Shortly before my deadline, I went down to the immigration office, explained my situation and they gave me a 6 month extension of period to stay to complete and submit my paperwork. I wonder if they tried the same?

Since spring, immigration authorities have necessitated foreigners to take out Austria public insurance, which costs 200-300 euros per month.

Same for us gaijin residents of Japan! I was getting 35,000  yen taken off my monthly wages from Day 1 for mandatory pension and health coverage.

Just to put that into perspective, that's nearly my monthly net wages.... hopefully teachers earn a LOT more than I do.

Crying over spilled milk. They knew the situation and did nothing about it. The law is the law, regardless of which country.

I read this as the school couldn't afford to / didn't want to compensate the teachers sufficiently for the added cost and the teachers decided to look for greener pastures. The school will probably get by other existing teachers - probably permanent residents - and make classes larger.
