I am shocked by most of the above arrogant comments from lucky people born and living in a safe and wealthy country about other unlucky ones aspiring to a better life. None can save everyone, but please try to keep a minimum decency and respect.

40 granted asylum. I have been reading this already 20 times to check if my understanding was correct. Must be a typo, I should be reading 4,000, no?

Come to Australia. You get everything for free.

Why would ANY asylum seeker choose a second rate country like Japan, over Finland or Canada?

Oldman 13,
I agree with your post somewhat. Then I look outside my window and basically everyone I see is over 70 years of age.

Sure; everyone on the planet knows where to go for FREE $$$.
Don't bother with Japan, you don't stand a chance.

The unfortunate truth is that most of the applicants are economic migrants, as the above list clearly shows. The genuine applicants lose out because of such fake applicants.

You are correct, sir.

Good job Japan.
Sets an example of how you properly control immigration instead of porous borders that destroy a country.

Maybe they realized it’s an exercise in futility.

Didn’t know the asylum scam. I guess it is much cheaper than the fake student one or the training one. The last too you have pay a lot of money to middle men.

Why would asylum seekers choose Japan? Almost all would speak/understand zero Japanese, and would be totally unfamiliar with Japanese culture (and, frankly, be uninterested in learning about either).

Because they figured out it was easier to get a student visa and then skip out on it

I am surprised the title of the article didn't read, "Asylum Seekers to Japan Double in Past Year!"
