According to the news and searches online, as of two weeks ago, only one person has died in the US from omicron. He was an unvaccinated 60 year old man in Texas with underlying conditions and had Delta variant previously. He died in December.
Not a single death has been reported from omicron of a vaccinated person in the US.
In the UK, it is reported that 12 people died “with” omicron. Every one had multiple underlying conditions. The government has carefully constructed language to say “with” but not saying “from.”
Apparently more people are dying from falling in the tub than omicron.

Government doing what it does best, wasting time, energy and money. Next, some official will want to print and post signs on businesses that omicron is not allowed to enter.

Quasi-emergency measures will not prevent Omicron from spreading. But the government needs to "do something" about it because the Upper House elections are coming soon.

This virus is like a see-saw the numbers go up and then come down only to reverse. We get shot after shot, and a booster to get maybe another booster. I read where one scientist said it would be simply better if everyone caught it and that way we would break herd immunity. Is that the answer, I don't think so because after the scientist get a hold on to this virus it morphs to another one. Covid is here to stay, just like the common cold, the flu and every other virus you just can't kill it, but maybe control it.

You mean other countries should close their gates to Japan. And have whoever they allow go through a grueling 5 hours of paperwork within the airport and mandatory hotel quarantine for at least 10 days.

Quasi-emergency measures are not effective to prevent Omicron from spreading. At this moment, we cannot do anything about it.

Just like in the beginning when they pointed fingers at the Diamond Princess. Easier to blame someone else than to look in the mirror!

love the way they blame the spike in Okinawa on the US bases. Nothing to do with all the natives who descended on the area for the holidays oh no it’s those Americans for sure. Pfft

The horse bolted the stable long time ago and his wrecking havoc.
Lol, can't see the forest for the trees.
Well, It is very clear that Kishida is more concerned with his rating with the public and is using the
virus to fan xenophobia. Doing exactly what some here accuse SK presidents of doing.

Wow, propaganda ministry hard at work again! There were a few cases linked to the bases, the rest, for the most part have been UNTRACEABLE! Many in fact happened in locations and with people who had ZERO contact with anyone from the military or from anyone infected(Japanese) either.
Please get off the soap box and stop finger pointing! It serves no purpose and is the proverbial "yellow journalism!"

Yet the critical cases in Osaka is listed in the prefecture health website as 4. Hmmm ... something don't add up.

......
Too true!
The infection rates outside Japan are going down whereas the infection rates in Japan rates are going up.
Keep the gates closed!

Kihara said Japan will maintain its entry ban on nonresident foreign nationals into Japan until the end of February as planned. "The infection situations regarding Omicron are clearly different in Japan and abroad," he said.
True, France for instance is prolonging the obligation for companies to let their workers work from home at least three days per week, while Japan trains are packed but the government bans alcohol after 8pm and banned foreigners after February 2020, both highly scientific measures of undoubted efficacy. The record cases, rapid spike, low hospitalization rates, are all exactly the same as everywhere with omicron. Wake up Japan, you are not special, just more racist!

"A quasi-emergency allows local governors, based on their decisions, to request and order restaurants and bars to close early and stop or limit the serving of alcohol."
And also allows said places to simply say, "No." And since it's largely kids spreading Omicron -- or at least that many kids are infected and spreading it -- makes a whole lot of sense to blame alcohol again.

Having chosen to live in Japan i never like to overly bash my host, but these quasi emergency things are ridiculous.
Omicron will rip through in big numbrrs and then likely subside as seen in europe currently,
Koike wants to stop infections but not society wont happen

The western Japan prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo will ask the government Friday to place them under a coronavirus quasi-state emergency amid the rapid spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant, Osaka Gov Hirofumi Yoshimura said.
Please place us under your "quasi-emergency" so we can declare mission accomplished and not have to think about the welfare of the majority of the populace or the actual spread of the virus after that.

A Necessity of every state in Japan!! No surprise.
