Did JR refund the "express" portion of the tickets?

One would think that the cause of the power outage would be covered in the story, given the magnitude of the impact.

Full agreement. Tokyo is much more pleasant when a large fraction of the population is somewhere else.

Those with ekiben's would have been the lucky ones. So always bring a spare drink and ekiben?

Good thing she is so young, and will probably forget this whole ordeal. I'm glad nobody had any serious medical problems from this.

man id rather drink battery acid than brave those crowds, I mean youd need the vaction after just to recover from the stress of the crowds

That's just common sense. I can't imagine a shinkansen ride without it.

Shinkansen seats are not seats-only ticketing.

Flying is much better option. Faster and cheaper.
