So, is Japan remilitarising?

No. It is preparing for the worst, given that it is surrounded by dangerous nations like China, North Korea, and Russia. It is also supporting other friendly nations that are even closer to the front line: in this case, the Philippines.

In short, Japan is doing exactly the right thing.

Stop the escalation. Japan is being set up to pick a fight with China and Russia. We seem to be following that same path as Ukraine.

We seem to be following that same path as Ukraine.

Japan is conducting drills, strengthening alliances, putting in policies etc. precisely so it doesn't encounter what Ukraine has: suffering an unprovoked invasion for no reason other than the neighboring dictator's dreams of conquest.

As above, Japan is doing exactly the right thing.

Well if you look timid, indecisive and weak Japan will certainly end up like Ukraine. Despots don't attack strong nations. They attack the weaklings.

President Marcos Jr. is obviously getting some sweet, sweet financial transfers from the US DoD. I hope it works out better than it did for your father!

No, they attack those who threaten them. The US clearly wants war with China, but they are too chicken to do it themselves, so they'll get the Philippines and Japan to trigger them. Just like they were too chicken to attack Russia, so they got Ukraine to "act strong" and threaten them. Acting strong, with all the NATO training, arming, and support, did not help Ukraine...

Stop the escalation.

Totally agree, but you need to direct that sentiment to China and Russia.

Japan is being set up to pick a fight with China and Russia. We seem to be following that same path as Ukraine.

Hardly, as Ukraine has no military allies to back it up. Japan has a direct ally in the US, and is likely to get additional support from Australia, UK and a number of others should China or Russia or North Korea begin any hostilities.

Japan will not begin any conflict with its current constitution, but it will defend itself if attacked in any way. Preparing for that seems sensible with China's continuing militarization and Russia already involved in an invasion of a neighbor. Taking no action would be to fall into Chinese preference to deal with one nation at a time in order to get its way.

A world under Chinese control is a failed world and one set for nothing but misery, lack of personal freedoms and being under the total control of old Chinese men who like nothing more than to repress others.

Japan is standing on the right side, the side of freedom and hope for the future.

All of that is just plain wrong.

The US wants peace but China wants to expand its territory, so it is China that wants a war with the US, it is waiting until it thinks it is ready and can win, which it cant at the moment.

The Philippines and Japan are defending their rights in their territory against an encroaching China, they do so for their own interests and the US is backing them as it has an alliance with both.

The US wanted to help Russia after the collapse of the USSR, but Putin wants to restore the glory days for Russia when it controlled eastern Europe through the USSR. They had no interest in conflict with Russia. And Ukraine absolutely did not threaten Russia in any way. It wanted to align closer to western Europe, join the EU and NATO as other eastern European nations have done before them. Putin wants control of Ukraine and fostered unrest in eastern Ukraine, and a civil uprising backed by Russian troops and equipment. Russian propaganda and fake information is easily believed by pro Russians, but it is not based on reality or facts, just on Putin's opinions and need to be remembered as a "great Russian leader". He will never be that.

I can say with certainty because I work in the belly of that beast that nobody in the US military wants a war with China. Nobody. And it is certainly true that the strong do not get attacked. Every flag officer I hear speak says that our goal is to be strong enough and observably well trained enough to deter the Chinese from attacking our allies. These exercises reinforce to China and Russia that none of the allied nations would be fighting alone so the Chinese, and Russians. have to take that into consideration. That perceived strength is what keeps the peace in Asia.

Especially in China's backyard (Taiwan). All good people hope this does not happen. China will fight to the bitter end in a conflict over Taiwan.

Imagine completely rewriting history to look like a tough guy. Still Putin's War and still Russia's failure against #30 on the military expenditure list.

Then China better not start something. It's easy to threaten to blow up the world but China needs to consider whether their pride is worth that.

Fighting to the bitter end, a country that is not posing a threat much less invading you, is a really stupid and short sighted thing to do.

And don’t they look happy, getting ready for a war, playing with their multi-billion dollar toys… look in any playground: boys destroy, girls create, and this is what those boys grow up to be.

Friends help friends. Good on Japan

It's better to be prepared and not need to use it, than need to use it and not prepared

Just like they were too chicken to attack Russia, so they got Ukraine to "act strong" and threaten them. Acting strong, with all the NATO training, arming, and support, did not help Ukraine...

Ukraine never threatened Russia, until Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine has no interest in taking over any Russian land, while Russia is the opposite - Russia wants to take over Ukrainian land. That's why Ukraine had no reason to threaten Russia - they just want Russia to stay on their side of the fence

And supposedly being a "superpower" is not helping Russia - Russia can't even beat Ukraine and even has to pay a visit to impoverished North Korea (a country with no money that's resorting to stealing!) to beg for weapons

And then there is the little detail that perhaps not all of the PLA wants a war with the US. Many PLA members have a favorable opinion of the US and Taiwan.

So, is Japan remilitarising?

Japan has been remilitarizing since 1954. Mostly at the behest of the United States.

No, let's be honest about what this is. Japan is re-arming because it is primarily concerned about protecting its trade routes, sea lanes, and geopolitical interests. I am not even against this - I think it's long due that Japan projects strength, and at least starts the process of not being entirely dependent on the US for protection.

But even the very implication that any country would risk starting World War III with the US by attacking Japan, a country more or less considered a sacred cow, is flat out absurd propaganda. Straight LDP Koolaid.
