"express her resolve"? Why didn't the writer or editor of the story use normal English, like "she is determined to get married", etc?

Moderator: She did not speak directly to the media, but through a statement released by the Imperial Household Agency.

I honestly cannot blame Mako for wishing to get married to lose her title and "royal" status to live a normal, happy life as much as possible. And I cannot see the point of the opposition to the marriage - Mako is not even in the line of succession.

I hope Mako gets married right away and clears the way for Kako to be the first Empress in hundreds of years.

What’s wrong with Aiko?

This bullying of the potential spouse (before and after marriage) is a tradition with this “Royal Family.” I read that wife of the former emperor really got it from his mother who unleashed everything but the kitchen sink at her! And even after the marriage too. If my mother did that to my fiancee or wife, she would have been disowned. A little class is necessary if you are to be “royal” or even if you are a commoner. Geez!

Good for her. I support them.

Elope already. The end.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Good. They should go down the ward office and do it.

Fathers will always be Fathers , and view prospective suitors, at least subconsciously as renegades rebels and rogues.

For female members of the Japanese imperial family, marriage to a commoner means losing imperial status.

Getting any and all “imperial” hands out of our public coffers sounds good to me.

It's the 21st century, just do it, stuff the family

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I'd marry her. Would I instantly be called a prince and get prince status?

No, you wouldnt. Youd be called "commoner", and so would Mako.

I know she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth but I feel sorry for her. They’re both adults. She’s essentially a ward of the state unable to freely make her own decisions. What kind of life is that?

When five years old I yearned to be a Princess, Father referred to me a his Princess.

At 30 ish finding Prince Charming is somewhat more of a challenge.

Independence evokes my time, a layer of stealth selfishness.

An unwillingness to share my personal time and space.

It is difficult to explain.

Princess Mako, before and after a devotion to duty is sensitive to the intense deep needs/feeling of affection.

The natural connection to someone special.

It seems her father, the Crown Prince, basically doesn't like the candidate for the groom. Is the unspoken message here that the wedding would place a cloud over the Crown Prince's family, and therefore strengthen the case for the Emperor's daughter Princess Aiko to eventually take the throne?

This is going to be the longest engagement in history!

They could always move in with Meg & Harry.

Go go Princess Mako! Follow your heart!

At the end of the day, it's all about your own happiness

Men living in Japan must have been Japanised. Old thinking

Shes only 29. In these modern world women can still give birth even in.their 40s with healthy babies.

Empress Masako had Princess Aiko at 36?

Princess Mako has enough time.

Trust your heart. Princess Mako.

Royal hormones speaking. They must be obeyed!

What’s wrong with Aiko?

Seems like a nice young lady.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Just go for it!

At 29, the clock is ticking if she wants children. Needlessly delaying her marriage is just cruel at this point.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

They should elope!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Does she really have to act like 'Princess'? Her title is Miss at the moment and will be Mrs but never Princess.

What a silly comment. Her drivers license will not say Miss, as it's in Japanese. And her official title is 内親王 (ないしんおう - naishinou) - Imperial princess.

Yes, Princess Mako of Akishino, duty, with respect demands that Princess Mako adheres to the responsibilities of title.

Princess Mako of Akishino is not a celebrity, hells teeth. lose the political.

Princess Mako of Akishino and sister Princess Kako of Akishino could provide a more balanced, nuanced society

Who cares!

I am happy to see that her resolve has not been shaken by all those negative noises. She has my support.

@kurisupisu

Did you really mean that? I am sure the imperial household could scrape up enough yen for the marraige couldnt they?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Yessssssssssssssss !

1 ( +2 / -1 )

not a good sign if money is already a problem before the wedding

1 ( +1 / -0 )

May she be happy in her marriage.

Best wishes,

The Bakufu

This Lady & her Man are Champions.

Yes, I support this whole heartedly. The only thing I wish would happen, which may end up happening anyway, is the revision of that 1947 imperial family law. Because seriously, the last thing the royal family needs is a lose any more members, and shoulder even more burden upon the remaining ones.

like a fairytale and anime story..

Let her marry who she wants to. She's 29 and has a life to live. And she has the man for her heart. The train is waiting to take you to the 21st Century, Imperial Japan.

I hope that they come together and get married soon ..

Let no one interfere with their relationship ..

And people whoever are trying to snatch her, get lost in the forest and find yourself a gorilla or chimpanzee that'll suit you more.. good luck!

Will she get a million bucks like Princess Ayako did, to help her adjust to life as a commoner?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Women's determination is strong. Nobody can turn it over.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Does she really have to act like 'Princess'? Her title is Miss at the moment and will be Mrs but never Princess. Check her ID.

To hell with 'tradition'. Mako, you're a woman and you found the right man for you. Go off, get married and start your lives together. You have only one life and nothing major to lose here. Go for it and DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY.

But given the shrinking imperial family under the 1947 law that states only men in the paternal line can ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne, there has been a debate about letting women retain imperial status even after marriage and establish their own branches to ease the load of public duties on individual imperial members.

Overall I support for "female" branches, and that's why I would like to give critical assessment on potential male marriage partners to royal women like Princess Mako. As he becomes a princess and public figure, I think that a certain screening for qualifications is necessary though the couple's free will should mostly be respected.

Now I see confusion or contradiction in claims of "male only" hardline traditionalists. They harshly criticize the marriage plan, on the ground that Mr Komuro is short of qualification for Princess Mako. But how come it matters so much to them? Under the current law, upon her marriage Mako will become a private citizen leaving the imperial house while Komuro can never enter the house as a royal member. Or do they implicitly accept a female branch in the future?

"Princess Mako expresses strong resolve to get married"

If that doesn't seem to be something someone forced or dictated you to say/feel, I don't know what is.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Yeh, I am sure that Princess Mako has enough in her bank account but she needs her beau to get a job first to save face.....

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Why i don't even care?

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Yes! She must complete her duty as a Japanese woman to marry, have kids and become a mother (to her husband). Living the dream!

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

She will not be able to live in America, only an American can confer this rights

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

I'd marry her. Would I instantly be called a prince and get prince status? I would brag to my buddies and make them all call me prince. Lol.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Kei Komuro has been in full-time education since 2012 and won’t have a job until next year, at the earliest.

There must be vast debt to be repaid for educational expenses.

There isn’t any money to get married,is there?
