They'd better not cancel the rugger game in Yokohama over a bit of wind & rain

Looks like they already have.

The Scots are going to be furious if their game gets cancelled.

Old men.. Listen, stay of your roof. Whatever it is it can wait. Just stay safe :)

10 ( +10 / -0 )

If you do go out in the wind do not try and use an umbrella.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Believe it or not, it's going to probably be about the same strength as the previous one that hit Chiba. However the large size of it will make it seem like it's a hell of a lot larger as the gale force wind bands extend out from the center much farther.

Be a bit thankful that it will weaken somewhat prior to hitting too.

Stock up on water TODAY, tie down your roof tiles TODAY, have batteries on hand with flashlights, and if power goes out be careful with candles.

Make sure to open up a window a crack, on the opposite site of where the winds are blowing from, as pressure building up, particularly in newer buildings, will on occasion cause them to blow out! Shut curtains, in case something flies into and breaks the glass. If you are worried about flying debris, use some carpet tape and tape the windows with a big "X" which will help prevent large shards of flying glass.

Stock up on a few days of non-perishable foods, that you can eat cold, in a pinch. too!

Battery powered radios are a must if power goes out!

Use common sense and stay home, pop a cold one, watch a movie or two, or three, and

(Cue Fleetwood Mac) "Listen to the Wind Blow"......

10 ( +12 / -2 )

careful, everyone. if you,re able to cancel something, cancel it. play safe.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Supposed to have my daughters Sports Day Sunday morning. I wonder just how much debris we'll have to dig through in the courtyard to lay down our picnic blanket cause there's next to no chance they'll cancel it. God forbid they move it to the next day ya know.

Zichi,

All the best for your recovery.

I still remember your awesome messages on this portal after the nuclear meltdowns.

Your knowledge was a godsend.

Take care and thanks for everything.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Good adobaisu Yubez, all of it.

I'd also recommend cleaning your bath and filling it up with water. If your power goes out (like mine did for 2 days last year), your water may too. That water is very useful for making tea, washing, flushing the loo etc.

Especially for flushing the loo.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

@zichi be well

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Keeping an eye on this as my wife is working in Mie Prefecture over the coming weekend...

Hopefully it will all pass without causing too much damage :/

7 ( +7 / -0 )

You have to get used to the new "new". Global warming predicts more frequent, more powerful, and more rainy typhoons. More heat means more activity (frequent), more energy (powerful), and more moisture absorbtion (rainy).

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Just back from the hospital after an operation so I'll be in my bed until Tuesday.

Hope you feel better soon.

Stay safe, everyone.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

What will you do when the typhoon comes? Watch movies? Go shopping? Give us a list of things to do during this whopper of a typhoon!

One thing, don't go shopping,

6 ( +7 / -1 )

This typhoon is going to be huge and will definitely cause some major damage and disruptions. Stock up on water and batteries folks.

Looks like they already have.

The Scots are going to be furious if their game gets cancelled.

Bollocks, I've got tickets for it. If the Japan v Scotland game gets cancelled too, Japan progress. There must be a few oyajis looking for a way to make that happen...

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Readers, please refrain from making comments like the last sentence of the above post.

Apparently it's too logistically difficult to either reschedule or move to another location/date...

One wonders what's going to happen during the Summer 2020 Olympics should such a situation arise.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Good thing is that it's moving quickly. Hunker down indoors.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Mother Nature always has the final word, it is what it is, can’t control it, stay safe and use common sense...

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What's a little wind and rain when it comes to rugby?!

I am sure they will play on!!

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Lots of good advice here. Don't forget to bring things indoors that may Blow Away or be damaged

https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap?lat=23.2&lon=139.8&wxstn=0&satellite=1&hur=1 Seems like, for now, it is expected to follow Japan land a bit before landing, which could help reduce its strength. Thought I am getting worried by the fact than it was getting colder in Osaka recently but today is quite warm again. If I am not mistaking, cold weather bring typhoon down but warm one bring them up. Wondering : since lot of human activities produce heat, could preventive measure to reduce heat production when major typhoon are coming help in downsizing them ?
2 ( +3 / -1 )

Rgcivilian, wood is beautiful, but given where you live I can’t knock your choices.

Zichi, sounds like the best place to be! Get well soon.

Cancelling rugger for a drop of water and a bit of a breeze! What is the world coming to! They would never have done that in my day!

(and yes I am being humorous)

2 ( +3 / -1 )

This sounds like its going to cause a few problems! get down the 7-11 get stocked up on water, beer, food More beer, crisps, just a bit more beer, a few batteries for the wife, more beer, sake, bread for a sandwich and fillings, few cans of asashi, a 100 yen umbrella, ice to keep you beer cool just in case of a power out, and just in case you might run out of beer, get a few extra!!! with any luck you sleep through the storm!!!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I’m the type who usually sneers at those who scream ‘abunai!’ at everything but this one looks very naughty.

Somebody dropped a tiny tube of lipbalm on the train the other day and there were shrieks of 'abune!' as it rolled around the floor like a grenade without a pin.

Anyway, here is a funky view of the typhoon, of the entire world's weather

In the last typhoon a woman was hit by a gust of wind which slammed her against a wall and killed her.

It's going to weaken though, as the sea is too cold around Japan for it to maintain its strength.

I wouldn't bet on that. Generally you're correct, but this time the sea around Japan isn't any cooler. On top of that, the depth of water that is still quite hot is significantly more than this time. In other words, the winds and waves from the typhoon usually pull cold water to the surface of the ocean which reduce the typhoons strength. But it seems that in this case, the cool water is too deep to be affected which means its just circulating hot water.

In other words, it's so big that the typhoon is feeding itself!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Too many rugby fans on SNS who fail to grasp just how powerful and unpredictable typhoons can be..

"why not just move to another venue?"

How would you propose relocating numerous teams and all the media/staff etc to the one possible venue on Kyushu that might not be affected? Oh and that is if the typhoon's path doesn't change course again...

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Well there is little left to ravage, my home is well protected though. Garden is a waste land but tidy. Guess I can sit this one out. and I do have plans for the garden.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I have a Kubota Generator, it turned out to be a real life saver. Good investment.

Common sense and a good book.

mmwdkw:

but if that's the case, there's been no evacuation orders issued

You want to evacuate TOKYO?? Good luck with that.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is getting very serious.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Typhoons rarely obey the predictions and warnings, so be prepared for it to be either a) more fierce than you expected, or b) much lamer than the warnings.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

This typhoon season has seriously pissed me off. All these storms keep coming over the weekend. Come M-F and give me a day off from work. Not when I'm off trying to relax.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Crossing my fingers it doesn't hit Kansai too hard. So far, the weather reports just say rain. No warnings...yet.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Take this one seriously. https://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/1919.html

True. However instead of the very much archaic web site from the Japan Meteorological Agency which does not really help to follow the trajectory of the typhoon, I would advice everyone to follow the typhoon on windy.com where one can visualize wind and precipitation intensities. Those are visualizations created from outputs computed from the ECMWF global forecast model (or optimally GFS) model. This model is very accurate, 52 individual ensemble members are created twice a day for the medium-range forecasts.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

In other words, the winds and waves from the typhoon usually pull cold water to the surface of the ocean which reduce the typhoons strength. But it seems that in this case, the cool water is too deep to be affected which means its just circulating hot water.

Stop.. your last sentence is wrong here, The outer bands of the typhoon are already churning up the ocean water, the typhoon will lose strength exponentially as it hits the colder water AND it turns poleward.

The northern movement will also speed up the typhoon and weaken it significantly as well.

Ive lived though well over 100 typhoons here in Japan, it happens every time and the data is openly available to anyone who chooses to look for it.

It WILL, weaken SIGNIFICANTLY before it makes any landfall, and the Kanto area SHOULD be clear of the worst of it by Saturday night!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Recently I read a J news article that looked at the world's weather forecasters and put them in order. They compared forecasts with actual typhoons, to see who had the closest track record at 5 days before a typhoon.

The most accurate was a British site, the second was European, possibly 'windy' that Daito_hak mentions above (which I use), third and fourth were the most famous US sites, and the Japan Meteorological Agency was fifth most accurate. The UK Met Office gave a 47% chance of this typhoon hitting Tokyo.

1、イギリス気象庁(UK Met Office)

2、ヨーロッパ中期予報センター(ECMWFS)

3、アメリカ海軍(NAVGEM)

4、アメリカ海洋大気庁NOAA(GFS)

5、日本気象庁(GSM)

Too many people afraid about shallow stuff like sports events. "Imagine if this happens during the Olympics" or "Why can't they reschedule and relocate the games in another place"...Is really this stuff relevant? Safety is the only thing that people should care when a natural phenomenon can bring some disaster. And it's not only in Japan. You can have this kind of problems almost everywhere, despite some Countries are more prone to natural disasters than others. Also here in Europe your typical raining isn't what used to be anymore. Flooding and raining that are closer to typhoons than to what we were used to have in the past decades, are always more common.

Back on topic please.

@NorthernlifeToday

@rgcivilian1 considering that most houses are built from wood you've done extremely well to build your D day bunker..Now the next question is are you going to invite all the people in your area that are in wooden houses in for safety you know just like the little pigs ran to the brick house..or maybe your just that kind of person that locks them out...so which one are you?

Yes of course, what kind of neighbor or human would I be if I hadn't. I will have a full home but no worries, we have supplies to last us weeks even months and plenty of space for everyone. The basement is stocked, generators ready, solar panels and replacements ready, backup security systems, this place is better than the movie where the "purge" happened. One of my guests is a doctor his wife a nurse so we have medical supplies and by laws of Japan he as a doctor can administer them in case any serious injuries are encountered or those that can't make it need assistance. Another is a property builder and his equipment is readily available, engineers etc. WE planned for the worst outcome. All the planning, years of readiness, bring it. Was well worth the investment. Some of the neighbors also did the same so our entire neighbor is pretty set for those who need shelter and still have or couldn't afford the upgrades the grandma and grandpa will be well taken care before, during and after. That my friend is why we are a close community and support each other.

That courtyard may well be under water.

One of my guests is a doctor his wife a nurse so we have medical supplies and by laws of Japan he as a doctor can administer them in case any serious injuries are encountered or those that can't make it need assistance.

So why go the the trouble of saying all this? If he is licensed to practice here in Japan then no problem, but if not, watch out! By the laws of Japan the only people who are allowed to practice here are doctors authorized or licensed by the proper authorities.

If he was licensed in a country not recognized by Japan, even if he MAY be a doc, he can NOT practice medicine legally and could be held criminally responsible/liable.

Rather convenient to have a doctor, nurse and engineers all staying with you just as a typhoon approaches.

What if next Monday or Tuesday had been allocated as reserve days, with facilities for double headers to be staged, in the event of final pool round games being disrupted?

The “organisers” have said logistically it has ultimately proved impossible to move teams around at such short notice. Tricky, sure, but impossible? This is a country justly famous for the speed and efficiency of its internal transport links. Might it be that, behind the scenes, some of the competing sides, particularly the Tier One ones, decided it suited them better to hide behind the letter of the tournament rules, which say that postponed games should be declared 0-0 draws and the points shared?

What we do know is that the World Cup organisers went into this tournament with their eyes open. They have known for years when the typhoon season is; as long ago as September 2018 the tournament director Alan Gilpin called it “a real hot topic for us”. Had the competition kicked off even a couple of weeks’ later in September, there would have been less of a threat to keynote end-of-pool fixtures.

The other aggrieved body of people who will be looking for some proper answers are those supporters who paid thousands to come over to Japan to watch the games. The cost of their match tickets will be refunded but nothing else. Should they simply shrug their shoulders and head to the hotel bar? Or are they entitled to ask if more could have been done. I have just been walking around he streets and there are a lot of people with disappointed faces.

@ Sleepytanuki

I use wundergroung and JMA, but, it is not like there is no others options, see nandakandamanda post, if you want other ones, I am just used to these

https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap?lat=23.2&lon=139.8&wxstn=0&satellite=1&hur=1

https://www.jma.go.jp/jma/indexe.html

According to these Chugoku is not on the direct way of this one but that is expectation. There is still a possibility for it to change its route. So follow news. And even if it is not going to land there, there is chance to see typhoon wide area effect like rain, wind. So if you have stuff on you balcony, you better get them inside just in case (at least it will be good practice). If you have your washing machine out, getting the habit of turning the water off could be useful.

For now there is no warning nor advisory (JMA website) so it is most likely your are going to have a pretty normal day (a 100 shop umbrella (if not a poncho) is a better choice than the umbrella your late-grandma give you before your trip to Japan, thought.).

Since Japan is prone to disaster, it can be a good opportunity for you to get your disaster supply in order : canned food, water, battery, torch, some way to get information even in case of power shutdown, ...

Hope you enjoy your stay in Japan. Welcome !

I've heard Japanese media saying it's the strongest typhoon in the World... a Category 5 Hurricane.... but if that's the case, there's been no evacuation orders issued.... and the Embassies do not appear to have issued any travel alerts or advice.... I guess we're on our own.

It WAS, and they, the media play it up, and eventually, actually hopefully, people will take it seriously.

Contrary to what a poster here wrote about the sea temps being what ever, this typhoon is no longer a "super typhoon", YES it still is strong, and it is HUGE, but it is weakening, as they always do, as they hit colder water, slowdown, into their turn north. and speed up considerably.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Umbrellas are useless in a typhoon, and in reality are VERY dangerous as well, the wind can and does drag people along, and it is made worse when the umbrella is catching the wind too. IF they stay together, and are not torn apart.

A poncho is the best way to go! It may not be fashionable, but at least your hands are free.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Yubaru

Umbrellas are useless in a typhoon, and in reality are VERY dangerous as well

You are refering to my post ? I was talking about an area which have no warming.

Thanks to remembering that umbrella are a bad idea in typhoon (and useless).

A poncho is the best way to go! It may not be fashionable

Not fashionable ? Where do you buy your poncho ? If 100en shop ones are usually plain for 300en you can get some patterned one.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@cliperty clop, I went and had a look at the web link you put up, its really interesting as I've been watching the typhoon get closer to the mainland.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, it looks like it is a big one coming. Keep safe and help the ones in need during and after.

Good luck!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow that satellite image looks intense. I live in the Chugoku region. Is it far enough away from this typhoon path?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

This is all very good for japan rugby, go brave blossoms!

It's going to weaken though, as the sea is too cold around Japan for it to maintain its strength.

@michael michada: grilled a couple of steaks and drink. Nothing I can do will stop it anyway.

What do folks expect when wind gusts such as this come through. hmm I recall the old bad wolf knock knock knock..let me in. etc. I'll huff and i'll puff till I blow your house down, well there went the straw, wood and guess what hmm brick or concrete held.

That my friend is what happens to wood houses...I have a fully encased concrete home, earthquake proof with a levitation system and cable ties. bring it...With as many typhoons and earthquakes in this area just did the wise thing to invest where I live. Wood, so sorry.
