Thousands in shelters as powerful typhoon hits Kyushu

It’s gonna be one heck of a storm. They estimate winds of up 250kph. Hunker down people! It’s gonna be bad!

Been on those shelters once, surprisingly accommodating for maybe a night, hope not too much destruction will come with this typhoon.

Storm shutters are closed. Garden stuff put away. Homemade sushi ready.

I predict this will not be so bad. It’ll speed up and blow quickly through western Japan. By mid-week, I think people will be commenting on the usual other topics again. Let’s see if I’m right.

Agree that many typhoons are overhyped - but then there are those which are not. Only a fool would not take precautions for this one. I've filled up my bathtuub - why not? If the water is ended up not needed, I can still use it to take a bath. But I lived through the Kumamoto quakes. Things can get bad quite quickly.

That's because there's an even longer history of not under-reacting, which led to many deaths and heaps of criticism on the government. Better this and have nothing happen then landslides that bury old-folks homes because they were too slow to issue evacuations or state how serious things are.

While West Japan was preparing for the worst, today young people were trying to make to Tokyo Disneyland to avoid the lines and what not tomorrow during the public holiday!

I track each and every typhoon in hopes of scoring some good waves. After many typhoons pass it is true that they did not live up to the dreadful forecasts. But this typhoon is of another scale. And recent forecasts have been consistent for days in showing it’s track and strength. And now it is barreling down on us in Miyazaki and many friends are without power and their wives are scared to death. And unlike other typhoons, this one will give us a solid 12 hours of powerful winds, along with 500mm of rain and many landslides.

Those who underestimate the power of Mother Nature are the ones who most often pay the ultimate price.

@Rodney. Well, rather than just criticise. Learn Japanese, OR just look at the excellent website that JMA maintain in English very thourougly. Does your home country have a weather website for Japanese residents? I doubt it. Seriously, such a negative troll on all things Japanese.

Definitely I'd go with whisky rather than happoshu which is not fit to even clean your drains.

Which was about earthquakes in particular, not typhoons. They start started going overboard in the past 5 or so years.

Fukuoka wasn't that bad. Windy and heavy rain, yes! But overall, it just wasn't one of those massive destructive typhoons we were led to believe, can't speak for other areas, but Fukuoka wasn't that bad, didn't even wake up, but still thankful nothing major happened.

In Kobe the sea is a bit choppy and I can ride a bike with a kid on it with ease. Been downgraded to a Tropical storm. Cat5 - TS in 24 hrs.

Heading home for beer and a few movies. Will not be going out tonight just to be on the safe side. Kobe is a ghost town right now.
