It’s gonna be one heck of a storm. They estimate winds of up 250kph. Hunker down people! It’s gonna be bad!

Looks like this typhoon is going to create a few headaches. Make sure you've packed your Nannadol.

Been on those shelters once, surprisingly accommodating for maybe a night, hope not too much destruction will come with this typhoon.

Storm shutters are closed. Garden stuff put away. Homemade sushi ready.

I predict this will not be so bad. It’ll speed up and blow quickly through western Japan. By mid-week, I think people will be commenting on the usual other topics again. Let’s see if I’m right.

Japan tends to over react to typhoons.

Hagabis was bad but monsoon season and landslide tend to be more dangerous here.

Personally, I love the storms. They are a strong reminder of how temporary humans are on this timeline.

Agree that many typhoons are overhyped - but then there are those which are not. Only a fool would not take precautions for this one. I've filled up my bathtuub - why not? If the water is ended up not needed, I can still use it to take a bath. But I lived through the Kumamoto quakes. Things can get bad quite quickly.

Bought an extra 6 pack of the finest hapoushu to help me sleep through the racket.

It's already downgraded to Category 2 and will further weaken to Tropical Storm shortly.

No, the media does! It is a recent phenomenon that warnings like this are put out.

Finest? They all the same! You should get some "real" beer during a typhoon. Better yet, get a bottle of some decent whiskey!

Finest? They all the same!

It was a wee joke. They are all the same, but im poor, so i make the most of what i can afford. Hapoushu fl.

Dan Walsh: "Japan tends to over react to typhoons."

That's because there's an even longer history of not under-reacting, which led to many deaths and heaps of criticism on the government. Better this and have nothing happen then landslides that bury old-folks homes because they were too slow to issue evacuations or state how serious things are.

Trying to understand what the NHK women presenters are saying as the only source of English news during a typhoon.

Im sure this typhoon by the time it hits Tokyo it will be just a tiny wind and rain like always. Anyways stay safe.

While West Japan was preparing for the worst, today young people were trying to make to Tokyo Disneyland to avoid the lines and what not tomorrow during the public holiday!

I track each and every typhoon in hopes of scoring some good waves. After many typhoons pass it is true that they did not live up to the dreadful forecasts. But this typhoon is of another scale. And recent forecasts have been consistent for days in showing it’s track and strength. And now it is barreling down on us in Miyazaki and many friends are without power and their wives are scared to death. And unlike other typhoons, this one will give us a solid 12 hours of powerful winds, along with 500mm of rain and many landslides.

Those who underestimate the power of Mother Nature are the ones who most often pay the ultimate price.

Good luck to all those who are affected by this monster.

My son and grandaughters live on Kyushu. Please stay safe.

@Rodney. Well, rather than just criticise. Learn Japanese, OR just look at the excellent website that JMA maintain in English very thourougly. Does your home country have a weather website for Japanese residents? I doubt it. Seriously, such a negative troll on all things Japanese.

Stay safe all down South and ignore Rodney.

'Nama doru'? It is Typhoon No. 14! What was the name of the previous typhoon? I know, and I don't have to look it up...

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Definitely I'd go with whisky rather than happoshu which is not fit to even clean your drains.

Just fizzy beer flavored water

I wish the residents of Kyushu well. It’s better to be safe than sorry…: )

A night in Kochi of heavy rains and storm force winds.

Unable to sleep properly as the rain lashes against the shutters constantly.

I have settled for reading, hoping that such activity will divert my anxieties for what awaits me in the morning. ho hum.

I fear another fruit and veg massacre.

At least my water tanks/and barrels will be full. They have been a life saver so far this summer.

The strangest thing, the wind and rain stops and starts, calm/silence then chaos and deluge.

Well was I right or not? I mean, about this “unprecedented” typhoon that everybody on here was drumming on about? It’s just another Japan typhoon. Windy.

But I’ll make this forecast now. Expect some beautiful fresh days this week, like you haven’t enjoyed since spring.

Again, see if I’m right again.

Yeah, northern Kansai folks. Kyoto and the like. This thing is gonna whip through here fast today, so don’t bother carrying an umbrella because it’s just going to get broken.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

That's because there's an even longer history of not under-reacting, which led to many deaths and heaps of criticism on the government.

Which was about earthquakes in particular, not typhoons. They start started going overboard in the past 5 or so years.

Fukuoka wasn't that bad. Windy and heavy rain, yes! But overall, it just wasn't one of those massive destructive typhoons we were led to believe, can't speak for other areas, but Fukuoka wasn't that bad, didn't even wake up, but still thankful nothing major happened.

When Japan forecasts disaster, it doesn’t happen. When Japan ignores danger, disaster happens. Unfortunate fact of Japan. You can see it over and over. Especially with earthquakes. Then they prepare after a disaster so as to avoid a recurrence. But by then it’s too late. No second chances. It’s the Japan story.

In Kobe the sea is a bit choppy and I can ride a bike with a kid on it with ease. Been downgraded to a Tropical storm. Cat5 - TS in 24 hrs.

Heading home for beer and a few movies. Will not be going out tonight just to be on the safe side. Kobe is a ghost town right now.
