Would have liked to have read more about just how the problems at the new site were rectified.

Ah,nothing beat seeing a fresh and new place. The old one was really run down in my opinion. Time for some new things. Hope this one will last a century and be even more famous!!

I'm with Yubaru on this one. Sure it looks nice but...

Guess there are some folks who just can't part with the "old ways" and rather enjoy the prospect of buying some dioxins with their fresh fish too!

A couple of years ago a lot of the fish marketers were complaining about the too small spaces they were allotted. Some were so poorly designed that if they were cutting fish their elbow would bang against the wall. I wonder if during this two year delay they fixed a lot of these problems.

An ugly soulless shed that's cost an estimated $5.42 billion. What will happen to the vast area of primo real estate created by the move to Toyosu? That's the key question but hasn't been decided yet.

My thoughts too Alfie, all the character of a bus stop.
DiscoJ_2
'Character' is both largely meaningless and a biased comparison. Do you think tsukiji had 'character' when it first opened? Maybe in 83 years, this new place will have 'character' too.

New place seems very clean and good sanitary. Tsukiji was too old building there maybe a lot of rats and cockroaches behind.

behind a glass wall on a second-floor deck to view the auction. way more fun with tsukiji.

Where oh where is Isihara the man behind this. Shouldn't he be basking in the glory?

What's with the blue tarps? Are they the additional measures taken to prevent food contamination?

Looks a bit too sterile for me, loses a lot of the charm.

Where are all the rats going to go?
Cricky
Where are the rats going to go? As usual to the diet! It's refreshing to see so much transparity concerning such a large amount of tax payers money. I was blinking at the time so might has missed that bit...Shogani

Usually tire out the public for month or two, they will forget and the cancers can be blamed on an aging population.

@kyat. Have you watched j tv. Rats have fled everywhere. Rats are smart, they will find the new market. And eat dioxides and run around at night weeing and pooing.

Alfie, actually it has been decided, a large part of Tsukiji will be made into a transport depo to 2020, have seen that in the news a number of times now, THAT was one of the BIG reasons to get this done so they could complete the depot in time for 2020!

Ah, to now live in a land that puts some of the finest raw fish in the world into a can, and then boils it....my personal employment concerns have left me yearning to return to where I was born and grew up, near the base of Fuji-san. I will soon enjoy visiting, tasting the maguro of Toyosu - but who can forget the maguro of Tsukiji.

It definitely looks a lot more sanitary than the rat-infested Tsukiji. It makes me a bit sad to see those hundreds of beautiful mature tuna though. And, it looks like that every day! There is no way tuna populations can sustain that extent of culling of mature fish. This has been going on for over half a century. I fear those auction floors will be empty in the next two or three decades without greater restrictions on tuna fisheries.

Wild Alaskan Salmon aren't popular in Japan, i wonder why, because it's the most healthiest fish. In UK, it's hard to find even at Billingsgate, only farmed salmon available.

Olympics depot is just an excuse for ishihara et all to finalize their plans on development of some of the most prime real estate in the world. Next to Ginza. Ishihara will say he can’t remover how the land was sold so cheap when he was mayor.
Alfie Noakes
Yes, there will be a simplified version of the beltway road and this bus park transport hub. The full version of Arterial Road 2 won't now be ready until 2022. What is unclear is what will happen to the land being used as the transport hub after the Olympics. I'd be willing to bet a fair amount of money that this land, as Goodluck comments above, has been sold at rockbottom prices to Ishihara's mates in the real estate business and will be developed as luxury apartments or offices. You know how it works here....

I visited both Tsukiji jonai/jogai today then Toyosu, all three buildings. Agree with comments above as to the sterile atmosphere. The original Tsukiji had atmosphere from day, I would wager. After the 2020 Olympics, can the Toyosu site be rebuilt on the old Tsukiji site?
Oh, and I would bet a million pounds of fresh maguro that the local rats will zero in on the new Toyosu market. Please post the first rat photo there! Meanwhile, the next quake and tsunami and ground liquification await....

Years ago, in my hometown there used to wrought iron market, with wooden stalls inside. It was long and wide, with plenty of hussle and bustle, with a real atmosphere to it.
Then the municiple council came up with the plan of a new indoor modern, gleaming market, saying that is what we all want. Even a multi-storey car park on top.
Nobody was happy, and all the protesting and petitions came to nothing. As with Tsukiji, it closed, was soon demolished and the market stall holders re-located.
At first it seemed to do well, but within a few short years, people stopped going. It just had no atmospheric appeal dispite all it's efficiency and neatness.
It closed a few years later as stall holders moved out. The building now looks shabby and ready for demolition.
The next town 10 miles away kept their similar origional victorian market. It is now thieving.
I think that the same thing will happen here in Tokyo.
