Will the Olympics get its own category on World of Meters?
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
127 is more than the total number of cases for 15 countries!
NOMINATION
So I guess the Olympic Village is the autonomous zone of Tokyo. Maybe those trying to get refugee status in Japan should go here instead of wasting their time with Japan officials.
EuroJP
Since the beginning of the Olympic none of Japanese was tested positive. Ah, those foreigners again.
Antiquesaving
So entire teams violated the rules and nothing was done.
Well so much for the IOC playbook.
Oh where is "the IOC promised".?
eric_japan
Are they using the PCR test? CDC has announced that by years end they will stop using it because of false positives and the flu coming up positive with its use. So after all the reports of numbers of cases since this started, one has to wonder what are the true numbers?
Antiquesaving
Didn't read the article, did you?
Plenty of Japanese have tested positive and that has been reported including here in the article.
No Japanese athletes have ( going to guess they all got vaccinated) but what do you want, that they infect a Japanese athlete just to please you?

What a fun time is being had by all it seems…
itsonlyrocknroll
Egregious, now there's an term.
Be afraid Officer IOC dibble is on the lookout for , heinous monstrous rule breakers.
No fun allowed, you run quickly, you throw whatever, you jump over things, you splash about in the pool,
But you never show any emotion, if you win, no hugging allowed.
There is something deranged being played out, the friendly games, are you kidding?

1 day in and 127 cases 6 weeks to go. I’m not a gambling man but I’d put my money on that number rising as the Olympia variant is bread in the test tube called the Olympic city.

"Zero risk"... More like "zero truth"
as_the_crow_flies
'But, but, but ... didn't you just tell us "If you have blatant behaviors that are absolutely unbearable, we will definitely take action." Aren't a billion people projected to watch the opening ceremony? Isn't that a bit blatant, mmh?'
'Ah, but ... (long silence) ... That audience is overwhelmingly outside of Japan.'
' Mmmkaay, Riiiight, got it...'

They already got their payola from host nation entities, so anything they say now is just bs to cover their arses.

“Tune in tomorrow, Folks!” to see if this, ‘Japan’s preferred source of news & entertainment’, makes such a ‘regular’, afternoon column like the “Tokyo reports ‘oooo’ cases today”.
It seems way more informative and than the concise bit of stats in the other afternoon column. Nice work, staff!

Just spent hours looking this up and keep coming back to 2 words in the CDC Linked page "real time" do not confuse RT-PCR as if the RT stands for Real time it doesn't.
The CDC is referring to "Real-Time RT-PCR" and as far as I can figure out that is a test done mostly at airports similar to antigen tests that return a result in 15 minutes.
This does not seem to referring to the full lab RT-PCR only the"real time" also called rapid PCR in some places.
I figure virusrex may be better able to explain it.
snowymountainhell
… “naive(?) at best.”

@snowymountainhell
The security around the stadium was extreme.
As far as I could find and from whaty daugther and wife could find.
Getting near the stadium was restricted to those pre approved.
How that was done I don't know but it means those there were screened as to not be anyone that could remotely cause trouble.
Meaning supporters of the event.
snowymountainhell
ONLY “supporters of the event” @Antiquesavings 4:21p:

This whole Tokyo Games is becoming more bitter and twisted by the day.
Watch towers, and threats of expulsions.
Eat alone, there is no friendship, no companionship, no camaraderie, little means to share the meaning to strive to win or gain superiority, then share the experience.
Japan was brow beaten and bullied in to submitting to the IOC will.
That is a fact. No hiding from that.
BlackFlagCitizen
Or you could put your feet down and disqualify anyone who doesn't comply. Like anyone is going to abide by rules that have no consequences
Sven Asai
That’s a very good demand or proposal. Regarding the current exponential growth of infection numbers, it would be a helpful information in the future, to distinguish how many of the thousands of cases then were caused explicitly by the games and how many by the normal ‘development’, as if the games wouldn’t have been held. Then it is even possible to assign that certain number to what the IOC and stubborn government are responsible for and what percentage of future cases and death tolls they are not.
Antiquesaving
well that is simple. Did anyone see a single anti Olympics sign, protester, etc ..
How was it possible that the same day hundreds protesting outside the offices of the Olympic committee but not one went to the stadium where all the international press were!?
Had anyone tried this police would have scooped them up faster than you can say "no Olympics".
Spartan J
All athletes signed a pledge to abide/comply with the olympics codes, among which, is to wear their mask at all times. Those athletes, practically the whole team, at the opening ceremony, blatantly failed to comply with their pledge, beside endangering others, contravene the spirit of the Olympics, should be thrown out. IOC do the jobs, that you pledged.
Gaijinjland
That was predictable. Why didn't Japan and the IOC and Japan listen to the advice of the thousands of medical officials who warned them ages ago?
snowymountainhell
Sorry, @SpartanJ 4:44pm but “the rules” Japan was “sold” by the IOCJOC were revised & changed:
page 14: - https://gtimg.tokyo2020.org/image/upload/production/flg5huvr6y2xqmbbsyae.pdf -
Here’s the Athlete’s caveat:
No signature, no hanko, no proof they were informed of ANY rules.

People do not understand.
These Olympic games are for The People and The Children.
It does not matter if people test positive.
Because of these games, The People will learn once again to love their country and government and The Children will dream of becoming Olympians and winning gold medals.
Bjorn Tomention
Going to be 100s more after the super spreader road race cycling event covering 3 prefectures today. German even tested positive before it started .
They were huffing n puffing all over the place and not a mask in sight .
Still not allowed to drink with friends though . . . .are we !
Tokyoite
That sums it up.
People will be in packed trains on Monday morning shaking their heads reading the headlines about the "foreigner cases" at the Olympics, as if there was no COVID here before the opening ceremony.
Derek Grebe
I lost count of the number of flag-waving, beaming representatives of countries all over the world who pulled down their masks to get their faces on telly last night.
Blatant defiance of the pretend safety rules and not a finger has been lifted in reprimand.
The message is clear:
"We've had your money Tokyo, now sit back and shut up . We'll do the running and jumping, you'll do what we tell you. Capish?"
blvtzpk
I fully agree with you, Zichi. Whilst bringing in the athletes, their entourages, and other officials is not helping matters - especially the Delta variant - it is extremely naive to think that locals believe they’re safe and won’t be transmitting the virus by putting themselves in a potentially super-spreader environment.
Then again, ‘gaikoku’ is inherently scary for many here.
Kiwikid
17 new cases. 14 were Japanese residents. 2 staff and 1 athlete.
Tell me again how the foreigners are the problem. It's patently obvious why the Japanese media doesn't report nationalities of these cases.
louisferdinandc
So do we agree that Tokyo had in a single day more than 200 times the total cases related to the Olympics since July 1st, despite testing proportionally 200 times less (and ridiculously reporting lower figures on holidays)? Or we just go all fear and anger against the little mouse in the corner because the elephant in the room has become too big to even mention anymore?
Sven Asai
That’s surely not working correctly, because of overlapping (for example the many daily commuting volunteers and external staff being in both groups) and ignoring the probable existing remarkable bias (different levels of masking, restrictions, elite behavior etc). Of course a first approximate value would be better than nothing.
kyushubill
Thank you Suga, Hashimoto, Koike, Bach, Coates, and et al.

I was disappointed when seeing the US team in the opening ceremonies without masks on the entire time. Sure, they wore masks as they walked in, but then a few took the masks off. This little thing risks their being able to compete in their sport. Foolish.
The IOC rules are that if a test comes back positive the day of your competition, you forfeit and get quarantined. If you are quarantined, you can't compete.
Athletes - If you aren't inside your room or actively training/competing, keep the mask on until your last event of the entire trip. After that, risk whatever you like, but still follow Japanese laws. I'd be tempted to wash my hands immediately when entering my room too, since the doorknob could have Delta on it. Even if I don't get sick, I could test positive and be out of all competition.

I would also encourage cleaning hands after touching knobs.
Strangerland
This virus doesn't really transmit on surfaces. Though doing what you suggest would likely help protect against cold and flu.
blvtzpk
There’s only one knob that I’m assured is clean. I take precautions!
Where I work there are a number of doors that opened outwards. They have have handles that require to be pulled, and it’s always a gross experience. Even before COVID, I tried to cover my hand when grasping them.
I would also recommend great care for ‘strap hangers’ on trains, subways, and buses. When I have to use public transport, I try to use the rail above the strap which is used by commuters far less…I hope!
Zaphod
So do they have any problems from the virus? If not, why is this news. Also, how many cycles did they run the PCR test for? As every virologist can explain, if you run enough cycles, pretty much everybody will test "positive" for pretty much everything.
