1,128 positives out of 2,740 tests. I'd hardly call a 41% positive rate "low."

Thanks @TokyoHam

At least I don't have to do it again.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Let's hope we don't find out in a few days that they extended the tunnel over the long weekend. ...

10 ( +11 / -1 )

On the 21 we had 1,832 cases and just over 10,000 tests.

Today we have 1,128 cases for 2,740 tests

They reduced testing to less than 1/3 that of the 21st but still end up with more than half the number of cases.

Are those here with we beat covid numbers are down still going to say those things?

10 ( +14 / -4 )

Absolutely disastrous. 41% positives, mind bogglingly bad.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

I do agree with some posters who attribute the lower numbers partially to the long weekend, but in any case, these numbers very much point to Japan's success in vaccinating the over 65s as the new infections are concentrated amongst younger people.

83.9% of all over 65s have had one dose of the vaccine, and 64.4% are fully vaccinated.

@joffy

I have asked that question many times done a manual count for Tokyo using the Tokyo government site and never once had the lower infection rate they claim.

And.

Do the math yourself.

Remember that the positive cases are from the previous day's testing.

@Akula

Right yeah, so rather than the bank holiday 2 days ago, the effect of vaccinating the elderly has suddenly taken effect on the numbers.

I wish we had emojis here.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

When cases were increasing we were told by some to ignore that because severe cases were decreasing. Now, when cases are declining, (which has been pointed out ad nauseam is because of declining tests on holidays/weekends) these same people are choosing to ignore the increase in severe cases.

Probably not the same people.

1,128 positives out of 2,740 tests.

Absolutely pathetic. In some countries, more tests are taken in a small town! Remember what the fat guy said - Reduce the testing, reduce the testing!

8 ( +9 / -1 )

954 out of 1,128 are young people (maybe not the 167 in their 40s). Apparently, no reported deaths. Young people are flipping the bird to a feckless autocratic government of politicians and bureaucrats. Visit Shinjuku and Shibuya at night-- the konbinis are doing a great business selling beer and chuhai and people are drinking in the streets. Number of serious cases is up but, as usual, this clickbait operation does not report if those persons with serious cases have other ailments or co-morbidities or how old they are.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

If they tested more close contacts they would get a lot of positives and create ore close contacts who would then isolate and slow down the spread. And believe me this is spreading and will spread further. Delta is way more contagious and Lambda is also in Japan and is a beast.

Why go for herd mentality when in just 2 months time a decent number of people will be vaccinated

So how is the farmers background PM faring, empty stations vs GB Wimbledons soccer finals.

Antiquesaving What does the sentence ‘Are those here with we beat covid numbers are down still going to say those things?’ mean? Either I’m going mad or you need to run a grammar check.

8 deaths for the whole of Japan

EIGHT.

How many is too many for you? 80, 800, 8000?

I only mention the amount. You draw your own conclusions.

Maybe, to help you get a better understanding of the direction we are going, let's compare with previous months on the same day:

May 24 2021 = 85 deaths

Jun 24 2021 = 42 deaths

Jul 24 2021 = 8 deaths

Does that help? I can add the percentage drop if you need it.

Should I not trust the official stats?

I mean, it would take a lot of people working together to hide them, It would be a conspiracy.

Is that your theory?

Crazy that Osaka can conduct 11,000+ tests yet Tokyo... Well...

Israeli report: Coronavirus patients who recovered from the virus were far less likely to become infected during the latest wave of the pandemic than people who were vaccinated against COVID (6.72 times more likely), according to numbers presented to the Israeli Health Ministry.

https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/309762

So according to this report, it seems all patients detected positive and reported every day here will build better protection than the one with the current vaccine against a future wave/variant should we get one, so hell yes, vaccinated people too should wear masks more than ever to avoid to catch new variant and keep social distancing to avoid both contamination & transmission of the disease to healthily people.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

We don’t see a high rise in sever cases as predicted and deaths remain very low. Things going well, carry on with the vaccines and end this business soon

Is that your theory?

Nope , You are free to believe what you want. I also trust Bach and Suga that they can deliver a virus

free Olympics. Should I not trust our leaders ?

By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that it would take alot of people to hide data

that is pooled from around the country and input into a system at a central point ?

I Think a lot of people will like to know why.

Imagine a company with 100 branches nationwide, sales for the day are faxed to the head office

where they are input in the system, would it take alot of people to change the data ?

It takes alot of people that is why large companies are unable to cook the books, Toshiba, Enron to name a few are not large companies.

I am so deeply sorry to see the result of the government making the pandemic very scary, then tone it down.

I understand you guys to a point. You were scared to believe that this virus is deadly and we have no chance against it than the government trows in the Olympics.

Here are the facts you need to bear in mind.

Although testing is VERY important RT-PCR testing should be limited to those traveling, and those who came in contact with a positive person. A higher number of RT-PCR done, would not necessarily identify other infected people but increase the workload for laboratories.

The metrics of the pandemic you should actually look at is how many people are in hospitals and dying and especially how many healthy people are severely affected or died due to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Yes, any pandemic is scary any virus widespread is scary, however for anyone with a specialty in infectious diseases would tell you that now, caution should be used especially for people at risk (*already having comorbidities).

It is grotesque to see the government play the pandemic card when it was convenient and necessary to apply restriction, then suddenly switch to organize the Olympics while having restrictions for residents. However, please don't get brainwashed by a tall number of infections.

Get vaccinated, stop worrying about the Olympics or a tall number of infections, just ask Japanese Government to do their best to protect people at risk, those sick or over 70. Ask all medical staff working closely with those people to get vaccinated, and wear masks at all times.

If you look at the UK who's actually doing around 1.2 million test/day (RT-PCR and Antigenic Test), all they do now is to quarantine 10% of their population, but the number of infections is not really going down. However, the number of deaths is 10 times lower and hospitalization is less a burden right now.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Like it or not most people have given up caring. That may be because they are vaccinated, it might be because they have very little chance of dying or it may be because corona is never going to disappear.

Either way most people are out and about this week(the vast majority wearing masks)

Whatever the number of infections and government requests, the number of people carrying on daily life is only going to increase. In a few months mask wearing is going to decrease too.

Downvote, talk about long term corona all you want but public sentiment is clearly changing,

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Here are the facts you need to bear in mind.

Personal opinions that contradict the experts of the field are not facts, more like the opposite.

The best strategy until now is to test as much as possible anybody that has a possibility of being infected and trace them, which the Japanese government is not doing at all. The olympics are the ones that overwork the laboratories for a tiny fraction of the advantage, which is one of the reason the games make no sense.

And no, looking and hospitalizations and deaths is letting go huge opportunities to act before things go out of control, while looking at cases lets people predict and act at a much better timing.

How are other countries dealing with the pandemic now? vaccinations help a lot, but young people also get sick and also die, and that happens a lot more in public health that have not a lot of extra room to absorb a lot of extra cases in a short time, like the Japanese.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

And yet the sporty farce in Tokyo continues.

What a joke.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@virusrex If you(or whoever) are at risk and you did not get vaccinated, although you could have, then you are on a rode you have chosen for yourself.

Just by looking at your comments everywhere you just love to spread fear about how scary SARS-CoV2 is. Yes it is a dangerous virus, yes it is bad. However, people would still die of a cold or the flu depending on their immune system response to a virus. Indeed for flu, there were no measures taken, not that there were many in Japan, to begin with aside from baning visitors.

What? Banning alcohol? Advising to avoid non-essential travel outside the prefecture where you reside? Come one those were a joke. I live in Europe and Japan and I can tell you that you lack the grasp on reality my friend.

In Europe, we had strong lockdowns, the metric changed indeed but not by a lot.

Each year in Japan over 3500 people die of flu that is accounted for. Those who have cancer or other harsh or terminal sickness are not counted as Flu deaths although that is the trigger. Covid-19(SARS-CoV-2 sickness), aside from massive testing (compared to the flu viruses), you account for all deaths regardless of comorbidities.

The bottom line is I STRONGLY ADVICE ALL PEOPLE TO GET VACCINATED, protect yourself in a crowd, as the virus is trickier than the flu. And then go live your normal life without people scaring you into lockdowns.

What is a life lived in hiding and scared each day? I rather get infected and die than live such a life for the next 10 years. If I can't live a life where I can travel, enjoy meeting people, I rather not be a burden on this planet wasting space and resources.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

What information do you think is different in my comments from what the experts say? if that is not the case your actual purpose is to say the experts are the ones "spreading fear" except misleadingly trying to present it as if it was just something someone said, that is not the case.

You don't agree with the professionals? prove them wrong. You can't? well, that would mean that most likely it is you who is wrong.
