Japan on Tuesday reported 1,268 new coronavirus cases, the highest number since Oct 6. Okinawa Prefecture had the highest number with 225, excluding 164 cases reported on U.S. military bases.

The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 151 new coronavirus cases, up 48 from Monday and 105 more than last Monday.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is two, one more than Monday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 54, up two from Monday.

After Okinawa and Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka (124), Hiroshima (109), Yamaguchi (79, of which 62 were in Iwakuni), Kanagawa (55), Saitama (38), Chiba (34), Aichi (34), Tochigi (33), Hyogo (26) and Hokkaido (26).

One coronavirus-related death was reported nationwide.

 Okinawa Prefecture reported 225 cases

And why isnt this the top line? Oh right... Tokyo-centric reporting again!

FYI, the military also reported 164 new infections so the total for Okinawa is actually 389. Not to mention it has also been reported that the US Military had over 830 cases between December 15th and January 3rd.

Okinawa (and apparently Yamaguchi) are now apparently including cases from the military bases. Is this a new thing, or have those been included all along?

We won't get the booster until March. Might as well get this Omicron and get this over with.

It was a fun 3 months fully vaccinated. I was able to meet most of my friends.

They have been EXCULDED all along, because they are not "tested" nor taken care of by any Japanese health center or hospital. Even though they live here, AND have been partially responsible for the virus spreading in the local communities.

There is also no way for the Japanese health authorities to confirm the actual numbers either (sound familiar?)

Klausdorth

It is a milder variant and does not effect the lungs the way the previous variants did, that’s why the most common symptoms are the same as the common cold. The main long term problems are mental health issues caused by the mass hysteria in the Western media.

Considering yesterday was pretty much a public holiday, it's going to be a lot higher tomorrow. Hope this doesn't lead to another state of emergency.

You know who is to blame for the cases in Okinawa, American inva... I mean servicemen.

@FYI, thanks for the clarification.

Once again US Army has a strict and global testing protocol where as 0,x% of japanese civilians around is tested.

“Reports are that well over half of the Tokyo figures are in double vaccinated individuals, and then you have to add in the single vaccinated and triple vaccinated.

Mathematically, the vaccines seem to be doing nothing.”

I am not vaccinated.but to be fair, the vaccines might have been behind the low severity of new cases.. but the number tells me whoever is claiming the unvaccinated folks have been driving infections is talking BS

Cool to blame China, not americans it seems.

Shame!

So, it seems that even scientists don't know yet what will happen in the long-run.

True (at least they don't know for certain yet) but early indications* suggest the immune system is better capable at handling omicron than previous variants. More reason for optimism than negativity.

Just to add that all 58 cases in Osaka today has either mild or no symptoms**.

Would be great to have symptom details for future cases in Tokyo and Okinawa too.

I probably should have gotten tested before I flew, but it was New Year, and I couldn't get a pubclic or privae test. In Okinawa.

You werent looking in the right places! There are all sorts of locations that have been doing testing all through the new year break.

Think about it, all those increase in numbers didnt come about from NOT testing.

Heck in front of Starbucks in American Village in Chatan, there is a community testing spot, something like 2,000 for a test, with next day results. Dont think you looked or tried too hard to get a test!

There are other places in Naha near Kokusai as well!

Very high today!

Be careful, people.

“In the UK, Omicron cases are four times higher with unvaccinated people than vaccinated people.”

Thats probably true for the UK and elsewhere but if those unvaccinated folks act more carefully, they wouldn’t have been so sick.

Rob - And you're a doctor I presume? I'm sorry, you don't get to choose which variant to get infected with so stay on the safe side. Delta is still lurking about and you don't know when Omicron will mutate into something new again. You could be patient #1 for the new variant, congratulations. C'mon man, we're two years into this crap and if anything you should have learned by now, it's not about me, it's about we.

I understand this may be shock, but at same time we should not be panic.

Let's do our part, obey rules and pray so that this thing will be over.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

the 14 day is over the top there is no other country quarantining people this long

There should be no quarantine for people who are vaccinated and test negative. We are never getting out of this mess until this changes.

And so, the next wave begins. Hang on to your hats people. This is gonna make the previous waves look like a picnic.

Tsk tsk

@Ashley Shiba

China quarantines for 21 days, which should be the norm.

@Zichi

You’ll find most working Brits have been vaccinated- the feckless and certain groups haven’t due to distrust and/or lack of education.

About 30% of Londoners have not been vaccinated. I live in a borough where vaccination rates are 58% two doses, and just under 29% had the booster also.

Age and health are the bigger issues to getting or not.

Getting it is one thing. Going to hospital because of it are another. Getting the vax vastly increases the odds of you not having to do that. It's really that simple. and your politics are irrelevant.

It works, its free, needles aren't really that scary, and all the cool people are getting it.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Covid is length to one behavior, some people are hellbent on getting and spreading Covid, dining and drinking with total strangers

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Is the media going to constantly report how many people get Covid each day? At some point, why not just focus on how many people have severe symptoms? All these daily numbers give an impression that we are in a never-ending crisis.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Mathematically, the vaccines seem to be doing nothing.

Astounding wrong.

The total number of people with severe symptoms in the entire country is 54. And those are overwhelmingly likely to be the Delta variant.

The vaccines are doing precisely as predicted and protecting healthy people with normal immune systems.

I know we’ve hearing what the vaccines will do for only a year now, but come on.

I can explain it again and again for you, but I can’t understand it for you.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Yep, Omicron is here, and all of us are going to get in contact with it.

However, the important line in the article is this:

"The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is two, one more than Monday"

2 (TWO) people with severe symptoms in Tokyo, a city of 15 million. Yep, earth shattering.

Reports are that well over half of the Tokyo figures are in double vaccinated individuals, and then you have to add in the single vaccinated and triple vaccinated.

Mathematically, the vaccines seem to be doing nothing.

Fwiw, latest figures from Germany (Robert Koch Institute, sort of the equivalent of the CDC), show that 95% of the recent cases are fully vaccinated. In a population where 77% are fully vaccinated. Make of that what you want.

Once again US Army has a strict and global testing protocol where as 0,x% of japanese civilians around is tested.

What a bunch of hogwash! The US military openly admitted it was NOT testing people who got to Okinawa since September. Guess you only cherry-pick what you want to believe, even when it's not true!

Prove that 0% of Japanese civilians are not tested, wait you cant, because if they werent tested then there wouldnt be 200 plus new cases!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Rejoice ! Omicron is here to end the madness!

Severe cases in Tokyo 2??? Couldn't make up this stuff

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Oh and just information here, Okinawa is already reporting that there will be 600 or more new cases today!
