Don't get obsessed too much with case numbers. Our primary objective has always been to avoid overwhelming healthcare systems.
Now down below 10 patients in Tokyo alongside the constant fall nationwide is indeed a good progress.

Almost 2 years now you've been reading up to that point, surely you have better things to do?

Japan got a very late start doing vaccinations, but now it has over 70% of its population vaccinated, while the people still use masks and practice common-sense social distancing. Well done.

Why should these data be wrong? The time table fits the Covid-19 reports. Peak was reported on 30th August this year with 231.596 infections. At that time plenty of vaccination shots were administered already, but it takes 2 shots and about 3 weeks after the second shot to be fully vaccinated.
Up to today approx. 196 million shots were administered in Japan. 75.8 percent of the Japanese population are now fully vaccinated.
During September the number of patients started to decline steadly, everyday, everywhere in Japan, and now less than 1600 infected acute cases are known in all Japan.
It seens the Pfizer vaccine really works.
Covid-19 is not finished however, we must be careful, every day approx. 200 people or so are still showing up with a new corona virus infection in Japanese medical clinics. Another wave might start soon.

It should be fairly obvious by now that things have changed here in Japan. Regardless of whatever numbers are released the fact is things are slowly returning to normal. If you don’t think that is a good thing there is something wrong with you.

What interests me is context. The number of tests administered vs. positive cases is what I would like to see.

Seeing that there is another wave in Europe (regardless of the vaccination status that is always focussed on), it is safe to predict there will be another wave in Japan. However, seeing that the general population health in Japan is better, it also safe to predict that there will be few deaths and hospitalization.
So I just hope the J government does not give in to calls for more authoritarianism, like we sadly see in many countries.

Viruses always mutate to become more infectious and less lethal, as in the first infection wave the most vulnerable are taken out. There is nothing new, this is the way every pandemic has abatated.
