The Tokyo metropolitan government on Monday reported 17 new coronavirus cases, down two from Sunday and 12 down from last Monday.
The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo was 20, down two from Sunday, health officials said. The nationwide figure was 202, six down from Sunday.
Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 153. Osaka Prefecture had the most cases with 26, followed by Hyogo (19), Tokyo and Aichi (9). Nineteen prefectures reported no new cases.
The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was seven.

I thought I might find a conspiracy theorist here and I wasn't disappointed. The fact of the matter is the virus has hit a wall of vaccinations (185M doses in Japan to date) and preventive behaviors such as mask wearing.

we have been talking about number manipulation for a while now, but 17 is just remarkeable! Esepcially with everything reopening. It sort of defies logic, especially in the face of what we know about delta? Whats Japans secret? Like really??
stickman1760
it is a scientific fact tho that just as numbers can increase exponentially they can decrease exponentially. Anyway, all you doubters out there don’t think too much. Go out and have a drink tonight and be glad you made it this far.
Mr Kipling
If the figures were being manipulated, there would still be the high numbers requiring ICU treatment. This is not the case. The whole of the Japanese health service are not in on some LDP scam to get re-elected.

The worldwide plot of daily new cases of covid show maxima roughly every four months. (please see worldometer for example). This is quite different from seasonal peaks of influenza. Nobody really knows why the period of coronavirus waves is four months. But, we can expect another (worldwide) maximum sometime in the end of December 2021/beginning of January 2022.
akadake
I am not so sure about that, because we know pretty well that vaccinated transmit the virus the same way as unvaccinated.

Can't the conspiracy theorists at least come up with a new theory?
Keeping the numbers down by doing few tests is stupid, you would just allow the virus to exponentially spread unchecked. Why not lie and try to contain at the same time?
And it's even more stupid to think that to come up with few positives they need to actually do few tests because they don't have to tell us the true number of tests if they're lying in the first place =)
If they're lying it would be best to do as much test as needed but just lie about the results.
And it would be less suspicious that way =)

Yes, I'm aware that Japan is quite strict about who gets tested.
But, on Saturday we got 277 positives out of 42,743 tests. I'm just curious how this compares to the false positive rates. So although most people tested likely had symptoms, maybe they had something else...

This is quite suspicious. The number plans to get lower and lower each day right before the election day. I have been talking to my Japanese colleagues about these numbers, and they also do not believe them.
It is not just the foreigners who believe the J-gov is manipulating the numbers.
Nosui
I look at the deaths and hospitalization rates - it is quite interesting that the numbers are actually slightly up compared to this time last year. The number of infections is comparable too.
Last year some people were freaking out over 300-400 infections per day, this year it is being considered unbelievably low.

No speculations or theories, instead, clean your heads inside. Just be happy now and use the short time span to enjoy, meet, party and refill energy. You’ll of course find yourself locked down again early enough.

When it gets to the number zero, it’s time to put it in the Guinness Book of Records.
kwatt
Infection number may be zero but temporarily, for a few days. Coronavirus would be just another flu. Maybe people would take vaccine shot once (or twice) a year in the future.
Jimizo
We understand that the less you test, the less you find, but the falling hospitalizations indicate the trend is moving in the right direction unless you think these numbers are fudged.
If you do, you’d need very good evidence to back that up.
akadake
I make a conspiracy theory claim that can be verified soon: if we assume that the period of maximum daily cases is about four months also in the case of Japan, the next maximum will come in January 2022 regardless of vaccination status of society.
Raw Beer
Does anyone happen to know what is the rate of false positives from these tests? Are these numbers just false positives?

Agree to agree.

This is terrible! Regardless of what the actual figures are, it's hard to frighten the public when numbers of new cases are staying low. Hopefully a few more people will start shedding these awful masks, at least outdoors, and the perspex screens in restaurants will come down.
But who knows what'll happen after Oct 31.

A good news (like this) enhances my apatite :) Isn't it a Japanese expression?

@ShinkansenCaboose
Your reasoning doesn't explain why there were 4,000+ cases in summer. If this country's population was extraordinarily healthy and organised, there would have been no need for months of SOEs and other limitations.
I'd like to believe the numbers. A big part of the population is vaccinated and wearing masks is the norm. However, the timing is strange, to say the least.
BrainGuyJapan
*If that so? What i can tell you! That my company who have 300 employees all fully vaccinated. Everybody until now still must wear mask, must remove shoes and wash hands often at work. the result we have Zero case so far. I believe also other company i know are doing the same. This is team effort and everyone should be more positive about the situation.*

These are from Saturday or Sunday so they will be real. To get a test on the weekend you need to have breathing difficulties (or at least claim to have).

It's really over.

China officially has more virus cases than Japan now.
What the heck happened?

Wish the conspiracy theorists would find a new hobby, Just because there is not the catastrophe that they predicted they imagine everything happening is fake. Common sense tells us why the numbers are low in Japan, things I have covered countless times and confirmed to be correct.
Time to get out and about, stop worrying and upsetting yourselves and your loved ones with irrational fears.
factchecker
With numbers this low why are fully vaccinated returning residents still being made to self isolate?
bob
Along with the very elderly, obese people are overwhelmingly the population that are affected by Covid and therefore can be designated super spreaders.
One of the many lessons that will not be learned from this past year and a half is the benefits of diet and exercise.
ShinkansenCaboose
We believe the numbers. Went to a squirrel park today in Machida. Even little kids were masked up and always washing hands.
Did not count one obese person.
Busses filled with old people all masked up. Only two women a bit loud.
I think it is not herd immunity, but cooperative herd behavior.

The virus obediently serves the interest of the LDP-amazing!

The delta variant was more transmissible causing a spike in cases. We had vaccinations started and already many with natural immunity. This prevented huge death tolls and severe cases. This combined with Japanese wearing masks, low obesity, and less physical contact prevented. Healthy people can catch Covid yet are very unlikely to have severe symptoms unless elderly or obese. In the West the obesity rates are around 28-36% compared with 4% in Japan. Obesity also causes other problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes which contribute to severe cases and deaths. Diet is also important, those eating junk food and no fresh foods are more likely to have a poor outcomes. Thee are various papers online with research showing all these points that can easily be found.
We now have a majority vaccinated which provides some protection though it wanes quite fast and millions have antibodies too.
bob
Possibly. It could be that Japan's slow rollout of the vaccine with its 120 day effectiveness allowed a sufficient % of the population to attain it.
But theres not a single "expert" on the planet that has successfully predicted what will happen next.
High vaccination rates, low vaccination rates, lockdowns, no lockdowns, masks , no masks (the easiest to dispel. they are worse than useless). Not a single prediction has come to pass.
At some point, more people will start to realize they have been duped and just learn to live with it.
But not yet. The hysterics are far from done.

Conspiracy theorists should inform the opposition parties that the J-government manipulates the numbers. They will be surprised at such precious information and appreciate very much.
cleo
We know no such thing.
Vaccinated people who become infected can transmit the virus, but vaccinated people are much less likely to become infected and so much less likely to transmit the virus.

What does an obese person have to do with anything? What a weird statement. Are you saying that become someone is fat that makes them behave differently with respect to Covid restrictions?
As far as the figures go, yes it all seems a bit too good to be true with an election coming up. This has happened before.
