The Tokyo metropolitan government on Sunday reported 19 new coronavirus cases, down 13 from Saturday and 21 down from last Sunday.

It is the lowest figure so far this year.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo was 22, unchanged from Saturday, health officials said. The nationwide figure was 208, unchanged from Saturday.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 236. Osaka Prefecture had the most cases with 38, followed by Tokyo, Aichi (18), Hokkaido (18), Hyogo (17), Okinawa (13) and Kanagawa (11).

If the figures were being manipulated (they aren't) you would still have a high number of hospitalizations. These have also dropped dramatically. For the numbers to be fudged, doctors, nurses and public health workers would all have to be in on the scam. They are not.

I truly hope the numbers will not increase when we go vote or after that, numbers after the election will be crucial.

There is still so much “hope for things to be worse “ very disappointing. Enjoy things as they actually are

and Kishida-san suggests everything takes time, and must be carefully deliberated.

So it looks like none of us are going anywhere this Xmas unless we can make a 2 week holiday into a 4 week one. And with the UK & America mucking it up all over again it seems we are very far from over this yet.

Frustrating but we've just got to all keep doing our bit I suppose.

Are people freely entering the country now? My understanding is it’s still very hard to get into Japan hence all the students and tourists complaining. Maybe I’m wrong about that.

With numbers this low why are fully vaccinated returning residents still being made to self isolate?

I'm just guessing, but it may be because the government is a) still scarred by how they and the health system lost control of the situation for a few weeks in August, b) the possibility of new variants causing this to happen again and ruin their vaccine efforts, c) this will encourage Japanese citizens to spend Japanese money in Japan instead of in Guam or Hawaii, and d) they don't really care because they can still go anywhere they want without the restrictions that affect us.

Just guessing though.

The conspiracy theorists come back out in full force with bizarre claims of the government concealing numbers. It’s time to get used to normality and stop this nonsense once and for all, it’s unproductive and regressive.

The economy needs a boost and it’s important to support local businesses, something I have done the whole time. If you are non senior and non obese without serious health issues you are at minuscule risk of Covid, even less now as the cases are so low.

As someone mentioned, it is better to disclose the number of cases out of how many tests at the same time

Just click the link ("new coronavirus cases") in the article to see test counts.

Who said that we would be down to single digits reported by the time of elections? Seems you were right.

Fabulous news!!

Herd Immunity.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Clippety- I think you're right, though many States in the U.S. use highly effective therapeutics, just in case there is a threat to hospital capacity.

But with case counts almost zero, makes me wonder if herd immunity has been reached. Some are worried about a spike, but Japan is now highly vaccinated and has already endured the delta spike.

Good news? Definitely. Saying the numbers are lower because of the election verges on conspiracy theory. But the election being scheduled just on time after the SOEs were lifted, the initially sluggish rollout progressed and numbers were lower? Time for the LDP to take undeserved credit, as politicians do.

@Meiyouwenti

People with different ethnic background can have different levels of susceptibility to various diseases. What you say, however, doesn't explain why Japan has higher overall numbers than all of its neighbours (some of them with a population ethnically more distant from that of Japan, such as Vietnam).

@lolozo79

Haha. Japan hasn't even managed to develop its own vaccine. Although it is good to see we've got someone with access to the LDP's biggest secrets happy to share with us on this anonymous comment board.

How convenient with an election coming.

It's the LDP's "October Surprise."

Don’t fight it! Just enjoy it!

open up and move on!

This is great news and I hope it means ending the ridiculous mask-wearing ritual soon. Bad enough to have to wear them indoors indefinitely when one isn't sick, but seeing people still wearing them when outdoors at parks and on bike paths and such has been beyond ridiculous for a while now. I want to see faces again and start feeling like we are all human!

Amazing Japan!

The numbers are down and the tourist industry is still being strangled…

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Great that numbers are down, kind of alarming that the government can't really say why.

Went shopping this weekend and we're at pre-covid crowds on Sundays again. I wouldn't be surprised if we had a "winter wave" around the holidays.

Haha! A couple of months ago, when infections were at their peak and everyone was panicking, I was posting here saying that people should calm down, there was nothing to worry about, and restrictions were unnecessary. Some of my posts were even deleted, presumably because only scaremongering was considered acceptable. Now I have been proven right. There is nothing that any normally-healthy person should fear. Just go out, either with or without a mask (whichever feels most comfortable for you) and live your life without worrying about Covid any more than you worry about getting the flu, being knocked down by a bus, or being attacked by a bear.

A miracle is the only explanation.

Watch what happens after the election.

Japan only tests people with severe symptoms. Vaccines massively reduce the likelihood of getting severe symptoms even in case of contagion. A much greater percentage of Japan residents is vaccinated. Numbers are down. Pretty coherent and scientific.

Now the next coherent steps would be that returning citizens and residents with two PCR negative tests and full vaccination don’t need to quarantine for 10-14 days. Then, that anyone else can also enter again Japan under the same conditions, since they are no threat to themselves, others or the health system. Then, that also non vaccinated people can enter with PCR tests, but go through quarantine (easier to monitor by then since the other categories above don’t need to isolate).

This is what others have been doing.

Will that happen here? Very unlikely.

Under 20 but 19

You are right. Japan is sending its students abroad but not reciprocating. Not surprising. Many stories of parents of Japanese children not being able to enter to see their own kids, fiances separated from Japanese partner, etc.

absolutely disgraceful.

So glad we are in a lull or over this.

Are we, though? I'd like to be optimistic, but the numbers seem awfully suspicious.

Japan is not doing the basic statical testing
